I gave him a D. The obvious choice is F, but I am unsure just how much autonomy and decision-making power he actually has, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

I gave him an F and it is sole based on basketball. Two coaches that were hired one men's and the other women's coach both had scandal's with the players on the team. The constant ineligibility of players transferring and grade issues during the season. There is no communication with administration and Athletic Department it appears. A lot of this should be squared away before the season when recruiting these players. If the coach thinks he can play this season but turns out he has to sit is a big deal when making a team. The other issue is keeping track of player with there grades. Setting classes up during the season and leading to the season should be planned out. This is clearly not happening. Its happen to key players like Hogan , Stone, ....ect. If you don't have a plan for this issue that happen multiple times under your watch you clearly haven't thought about it. If the AD response is "well they should of pass there class" , then my response would be "you should of hired a coach staff that would allow you to say that and still have a winning record."

Look at our annual results in the Horizon McCafferty standings for all sports accomplishments...in another thread I broke it down but we are ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS in dead last in the Vowels era. Embarrassingly poor results on the field. Add in the state of the flagship men's program (O-season, continual eligibility issues, decreased interest to 300 folks showing up for home games), its ugly and unacceptable. But it is accepted which makes it all the more infuriating and frustrating.

I had him as a strong 'D' but then the intangibles brought it back to an 'F'. 😁 I have to plead ignorance to the full scope of what he can actually control but there's enough negatives there to assume an F, I think.

This is a resounding rebuke of Robert Vowels. Shows how angry a guy can get when he can’t get a pepperoni pizza!🤬

I guess Vowels got and F so does that mean he has to sit out for a season?

I also gave him a D because he has had to work for what looks like me incompetent or disinterested people above him. Current President gets a pass because he is still new and not responsible for current mess.

We all know that Robert Vowels does a poor job of hiring coaches for mens and womens basketball. Is he good at the other parts of his job? Fundraising? Media relations? I dont know. It seems like our former assistant AD has done well at his next destinations. He's currently a D2 school in New Hampshire. According to his profile on their website Montgomery has done well as a fundraiser. "Montgomery established philanthropic records for both donors (a 70% increase in number from 2011 to 2014), and funds raised (more than $2.2 million in external revenue through new athletic corporate sponsorships over four years)". I interacted with Montgomery on 2 occasions back in the day, both interactions were pleasant. He always seemed to be trying to do three things at once. I wouldnt be opposed to bringing him back. saintanselmhawks.com/staff-directory/daron-montgomery/246#:~:text=Daron%20Montgomery%20serves%20the%20campus,overall%20Senior%20Administrative%20Leadership%20Team.

I would hope that he would get a good look if he applied for the job when/if it comes open. I know that there were some people on the message boards who didn't like Jason Horn, but I know other people had good experiences with him. He's currently the athletic director at Florida Memorial University, an NAIA school, and last summer he was named President of the NAIA Athletic Directors Association. He has won two NAIA AD of the Year awards. In addition, it was under his leadership that FMU hired the current basketball coach, who was previously the national NAIA coach of the year at Shawnee State. FMU's current basketball record is 18-5. Note from his bio: "Horn recently led FMU to its highest ranking in the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup Since 2011, finishing second among all NAIA HBCU's." Horn is a Detroit native who has worked with the Pistons, the G-League, University of Central Florida, University of Miami (FLA), and Conference USA, in addition to his time with the University of Detroit. If/when the AD job comes open, I hope he is given a look as well.

The structure of fund-raising at Detroit Mercy is that all gift officers work for the Development office, not the deans or, in this case, the Athletic Director. The position in Athletics is open right now, and generally it takes quite a while to hire for gift officer roles. It's not an easy job, and especially not in Athletics.
