Yeah, I don't totally understand this prep school fascination. I think the kids get sold a bill of goods, and probably miss out on a more normal, happier experience. I do know that MHSAA has rules that are causing kids to move out of state, mainly that Michigan allows fewer games and practices than most states. It's unfortunate, because I think the MHSAA rules are probably good. Seems like the classic "race to the basement." This guy has noticed the trend: www.statechampsnetwork.com/recruiting-scouting/basketball-transferring-has-become-the-newest-epidemic-to-hit-the-college-and-high-school-levels/This piece from that same author talks a bit more about the issue and some of the MHSAA restrictions that are hurting the state: www.statechampsnetwork.com/high-school-sports-news/boys-basketball-stay-home-the-struggle-to-keep-our-most-talented-players-in-michigan/Think about it: Michigan's Class of '16 is missing now Josh Jackson, Miles Bridges (two of the top 20 players in the nation), Billy Thomas, and I'm sure a few others I can't think of off the top of my head. And I agree that, more parochially, this certainly doesn't help UD recruiting.

Another of our 2017 targets is going to the prep route as Cass Tech's Donnie Tillman announces his plan to transfer to Findley Prep. Generally speaking, I hate to see basketball talent leaving the state like that, and more specifically, I thinks this move hurts our chances to land Tillman. One of the things that the Titan staff does well is take advantage of the opportunities they have to build relationships with recruits via unofficial visits and Coach Ray's camps. We lose that geographical advantage when a player moves out to Vegas. Also, while player migration to these basketball factories is good for the coaches and administrators there, I don't think it does that much for the player. Especially a kid like Tillman, who plays in Detroit in the PSL. If he can play, people will notice him. Playing at Detroit Consortium hasn't hurt Josh Jackson's recruiting. I don't think it hurt Tillman and Diane to play at Pershing. Same with the kids from Detroit Douglas. On the other hand, you can get hurt going to a prep school, as the cases of Richie Lewis, Trevor Manuel, and others would show. I don't think AJ Turner's stock has been helped or hurt by his prep school transfer. A non-Michigan guy we've talked about a lot here - Novian Cherry - is another who got totally screwed, by a prep school in Virginia or North Carolina.

Added Southfield guard Amauri Hardy, who says in an interview at Prep Ball Report that Detroit has contacted him. Got his first offer this week, from Buffalo.

Former 2016 U of D High guard Billy Thomas, now in the class of 2017 and at Genesis Academy, picked up an offer from East Tennessee State.
I know he had received some interest in the Titans when he was at U of D High and in the class of 2016. I would guess we're still at least tracking him.
Also, I have to figure he probably would have gotten an ESTU offer without going to prep school.

Kid must be good. I read that Villanova is going to see him this week. Per the list, they reportedly have an offer to him already.

Jack Ballantyne offered today by Oakland.
Note rather than updating the list periodically at the bottom of the thread, I am going to do all edits to the first post in the thread, so that first post will be the current board.

Twitterverse says Jermaine Jackson, Jr., will attend Word of God Prep in North Carolina, playing for coach Jerry Stackhouse. It appears that Jackson is staying in the state to play at (Macomb) Dakota HS. Relatedly (in a vague kind of way), I noticed that James Young, Michigan Class of '13, is playing in the NBA this year after a season at Kentucky. I don't get it - how is that possible when he didn't leave the state for a prep school?

There's no reason for him to leave. You must be mistaken about Young. You expect me to believe that playing basketball at Troy High and Rochester High was good enough to get Young a scholarship to Kentucky, which led to him being drafted into the NBA? Inconceivable.

Marquette picked up a verbal commitment from a class of 2017 recruit, Phillip Flory, whose father played at Marquette in the 80s. Maybe Jermaine Jackson Jr. takes notice and thinks that's a good idea. :-) scouthoops.scout.com/2/1322118.htmlAnd 15 months later, they lost him. You can never trust those EARLY verbal commitments. There is just too much time for too many things to happen. We can wait for the summer of 2016 for Jermaine Jackson, Jr. and the two kids from U of D Jesuit to commit to the Titans. From Twitter: Mark Miller @wisbbyearbook Oshkosh North sophomore Philip Flory has decided to "open up" his recruitment and is no longer verbally committed to Marquette.
