TERRIBLE hire. He was the absolute worst of the 4 announced. Same old BS. This hire was about safety. Not about what could actually rejuvenate and bring excitement to 6 and Liv. This program needs to win AND bring excitement back to the program. To me this is the same old same old let's go back to the same bucket and pull out the next thing that was like all the others. LAME ASF Your opinion while certainly everyone is entitled to have is about as pathetic as they come. Don't bother attending a game, don't need riff raff.

I heard that the new coach met with the entire Titan MBB team this afternoon and will be in Calihan tomorrow to do an evaluation of the guys on the court. I also heard he has pretty much already assembled a staff of assistants so there will be quick movement in that regard.

I’m with the Commish. Let’s put on our big boy pants and get with the new program. I say “Welcome Coach Montgomery. Go Titans.” New coach new era. No reason to rag the guy we just hired.

Well, he's already recruiting, so it doesn't appear he is wasting time. 🙂 Go Titans.

Congratulations to Coach Montgomery, I am going to root for the General. He was my first choice considering how the players played when he was an assistant coach. Let's get to work and Good luck overcoming the odds General.

Good luck to coach Montgomery. Certainly not the uber-exciting selection that many of us were hoping for... but I'll be rooting for him to pull us up from the abyss.
Some coaches nail it from the start but there are those coaches that figure things out and come back reborn the 2nd time around. I'm hoping that is who we picked up.
Now... just tell me his lead assistant is Michael Thomas. 😉 Go Titans!

I've been a season ticket holder over 20 years, this hire won't change that. However your pathetic comment does not change the sentiment.

I find it hard to believe that he was our first choice. MSU has been out of the NCAA Tournament for almost two weeks. Regardless, I am excited about a new direction.
Are there any MSU players that are currently in the portal? Hopefully Coach Montgomery gets a quick break and can get a couple of Big 10 portals to sign on.

I disagree, these contract negotiations take longer than you think.

I’ve stayed away pretty much all year because I didn’t have anything positive to say. But I can say now that I’m happy we made this hire. There is nothing wrong with it being a safe hire. In addition, he knows UDM and the City of Detroit and is well connected in basketball circles. If he can put a good staff together, I’m sure our prospects will improve quickly. I also hope the University will make an announcement soon about some investments they need to make in the athletic program overall that could also help his all other sports recruiting. Let’s welcome him and give him a chance to succeed.

ALL players on EVERY team are in the portal--some just haven't announced it yet. If an MSU player is even remotely interested in coming to UD with Coach Monty and is not yet officially in the portal, it is an easy step to put one's name in.

Not a horrible choice. Just safe whatever that means. When you have a 1-31 record, safe does not cut it. You have to take some risks which in this case would have been hiring a younger up and coming coach such as Blount. Total lack of imagination which has Vowels written all over it. I get young, but since when is 54 not young? Maybe in college basketball coaching ranks. I am two years older, I don't consider myself old despite getting the senior discount at the movie theater and endless mailings from AARP. When you were 30! Did you ever sit and count how many times the term middle aged changed for you through the years? I keep pushing it back I have it at 83 now🤔

LAME ASF I get it. My first choice did not even make the semifinals. He was a dynamic D2 coach - not Jordan Fee or Bronkema. He would have taken the city by storm. Unfortunately, we had a search firm this time - we did not use a search firm for Bacari and Davis. The MO of that search firm is placing former D1 head coaches and D1 assistants into D1 and D2 head coaching jobs. The final 4 announced by Tony Paul were not entirely accurate. Our final 4 were interviewed extensively by Taylor and McNamara (Chairman of the Board of Trustees). Taylor made the choice after the interviews. This was not a case of Vowels presenting his one candidate to the president and the president signing off. The LCA regional was a perfect cover for this. Ultimately, of the final 4 candidates, Monty demonstrated that he wanted the job the most. He came prepared. He had his assistants pretty much lined up. He had a list of players he wanted to recruit. He had a recruiting approach already established and ready to go. We saw that last night. He had a scheduling philosophy. Actually, this is not a safe choice because the president and the trustees were very aware that a lot of the remaining fans and the alumni wanted a big exciting splash made. Monty is not that kind of hire. For better or worse, the president looked at 4 options and chose the coach. He set the criteria for Vowels to follow. I am encouraged by the fact that the coach was named several days ahead of the target deadline and inside 4 weeks from the date of the announcement about Davis. In the end, as a Titan alum and fan, I want Monty to succeed here.

I hope Montgomery is the right guy and has a successful tenure at UD. I am already looking forward to next season!

Hope he hits the ground running...Whether he was my first choice or not makes no difference in the end... all we can do is say, Welcome and best of luck coach! Maybe I'll find myself back at the Hall this season! Go Titans!
