Another interesting moment was when Montgomery took a shot at NIU and said they “haven’t done anything” since he left and said “I had to get that dig in.” Not entirely sure what to make of it, but I found it bizarre and a bit cringe. He coached at NIU for 9 years and only had two seasons above .500, so one could also say NIU didn’t do much when he was in charge either. Maybe sports are different or maybe the world is changing, but disparaging your former employer in your public introduction for your new job seems petty and insecure. Maybe I’m overthinking it, though I know it’s the kind of thing that Ray McCallum wouldn’t even consider saying. BTW, NIU is 33-60 since Monty was sacked.

Hell, Bacari was better than Davis record wise. That's only because our crack PR staff miscalculated Bacari's winning percentage on the website history page. Bacari's career winning percentage is actually .254. But the statistics expert who calculated it on our history page published the ratio of wins to losses for Bacari rather than the percentage of wins to total games played. This was clearly President Taylor's show. Monty signaled that this will not be a quick fix.

Thank you for the excerpt. Interesting stuff. I wonder who the players were that were there today. I think it was Alex and Tyree in that pic from last week's practice. The two of them and guys like Hurst, Oaks, Manciel, and Johnson are guys I would like to see come back.

For all you guys here wondering what President Taylor was up to, today was the launch of his vision for athletics. The optics of this morning's event were Taylor and Monty. The AD took a back seat. I hope this is the start of something positive ... finally.

Outside of hurst. I could make a case you don’t want anyone back next year. My two cents. Taylor and BA are cut from the same cloth. He’s got used car salesman vibes. That being said he’s an upgrade from the previous president. This could be a two year turnaround.. recruit JUCO. I mean look at turnover in the conference. A bunch of new coaches. Getting JUCO players and the right guys out of the portal.. and you could fix it in two years. If you win 5 games next year it’s an improvement.

Monty on the show starts at Minute 22. The guy on the right is George Ward, a PSL coach. Sound quality is not the best. It's an hour long podcast.

I can see where one might get the used car vibes for BA, but I think he is a pretty genuine guy. Some would probably say that about Dick Vitale. I don't think Dr Taylor is at all like that. I think he is hearing more and more things on campus and that he is reacting positively to make changes. As for returning players, Hurst would be good, but I think more importantly would be Tankersly.

3 guys I want back: Stone, Tankersley, Hurst. I'd be happy if Manciel came back, too. Mak did average 8.4 ppg while shooting 37% from three over the final 15 games, and he's got two years of eligibility left. And I guess Tchikou should be welcomed back, although we have little idea what he'd do. If we started with those 5, I think you'd have the makings of a decent team, with 8 open scholarships for some good additions.
After that, it depends on what Coach can bring in. There's a couple potential returnees who could help at the end of the bench--Trenton Johnson in particular played a few strong games before injuries took their toll--but no one I'm going to lose sleep over. Except Schwannecke. I mean, gotta have Tobin back!
Substitute the name Marcus...

I'd take back all of the guys the Commissioner mentioned (including Johnson), as well as Tyree Davis and Oaks, if they wanted to come back. That still gives Monty room to add some impactful players.
I'm hopeful that Monty's contacts and network help him to bring in better (and immediately eligible) players than Davis was able to land, and I hope that the administration is ensuring that any internal roadblocks are being eliminated. But he is still dealing with the old facilities, lack of a robust NIL program, branding issues, poor attendance, lack of support, and everything that MD dealt with. I don't want him to be saddled with trying to recruit 10 plus serviceable D1 players before school starts in the fall.
It's easy to say, "We don't want any of those guys back; they were 1-31." What's not easy is signing significant upgrades at all those positions.
