Incredibly, there are reports that DePaul's athletic director is negotiating a contract extension with Coach Leiato. The fanbase is not happy. In this century, DePaul has had 6 seasons of .500 or better. Five have come under Leitao. DePaul has just had back-to-back .500 or better seasons for the first time since 2005, which was the last year under Coach Leitao the first time around at DePaul, before he went to Virginia. The Demons lose just two players this year -- senior Jalen Coleman Lands (11.1 points per game--I assume he's done--he would normally have been eligible for an injury redshirt season for 2019 but will run into the 5 years to play 4 rule unless he gets a waiver) and grad transfer Devin Gage, who's been mentioned around here, and who only played in 12 games. Assuming no other transfers, Paul Reed is a really good forward, Charlie Moore a good point guard, and Romeo Weems had a good year and should be ready to take a big step forward next season. Yes, they finished last again in the Big East, but they beat Iowa, Minnesota, and Texas Tech in non-conference, and won a Big East tournament game for the first time in 7 years. It can take time to rebuild a program as down in the dumps as DePaul. I'd give Leitao a two year extension.

That's one side of the argument. The other side is that despite an increase in talent, DePaul slipped from 7-11 in the Big East in 2019 to 3-15 this year. The offense looked ragged and stagnant for long stretches this season, which has been a frequent occurrence in this five year stretch under Coach DL. Five years in, and they have won only 35% of conference games. I like DL, but if I was DePaul administration, I would certainly be looking at who is out there and who we might be able to get as the next head coach.

I like DL, but if I was DePaul administration, I would certainly be looking at who is out there and who we might be able to get as the next head coach. I think if they've got somebody really good that they want, whom they know will take the job, that's one thing. For example, if they had decided a few weeks ago that they wanted Rick Pitino, and talked to him and knew he'd take it, that may make sense. But DePaul ain't a particularly desirable job. They're not going to lure in Mark Few or something. If they dump Leitao, they're unlikely to get any kind of high-major proven coach, or even one of the real hot-shot mid-major up-and-comers. They're probably looking at someone along the lines of Illinois State coach Dan Muller, or maybe a retread like Tom Crean or Brian Gregory. I think to change now would be a mistake. Remember, in the 5 years before rehiring Leitao, they won 17% of their conference games, and in the 7 years prior, 14%. It seems like a long time, but people forget what a disaster DePaul was when Leitao came back. I'd give him a two year extension, through 2022. If the bottom drops out next year, you can eat a year's salary; if it's a strong season, you can extend again, if he muddles along, he gets year 7 to do or die. Remember: Dare to be Great!

Should be pretty decent on a lower level. Signed with DePaul before they really upped the talent in their backcourt.

Lincoln Memorial sounds like a hospital. We should schedule them for a hospital v hospital showdown.

DePaul had success with a D2 player who transferred up recently. Not a bad gamble. I am not happy with the extension given to the head coach, but DePaul remains one of my favorite teams.

Averaged 19 points per game as a sophomore at Valpo.
