The Blue Demons have found their way to their customary spot at the bottom of the Big East, dropping to 0-5 in league play after last night's 14 point loss to Butler. Covid-19 issues have wrecked DePaul's schedule, but 0-5 is 0-5. The offense continues to struggle and an increased talent level isn't translating to wins. DePaul has a new athletic director; he might be considering getting his own guy in as head coach.

Hey, Sam.
I checked in on DePaul following the OSU game tonight. Watched the first half and it was the first time this year I've watched much of the Blue Demons.
All pleasantries out of the way, they do not look anything like a functional basketball team. Is there much coaching going on? Though I admittedly haven't watched them prior, the first half made it appear that the team itself was worth less than the sum of its parts. Talent all over the floor, but it looked like 5 talented guys got together and decided to play a pickup game against St. Johns. At least for tonight, Romeo Weems looked completely wasted on that team. I'm not sure that I saw a set play in the first half.
As someone who roots for DePaul more than most teams... I was a bit puzzled watching the game.

It's just not working out this time around and with a new AD coming on board last year, I think a change is coming. I would like to see them reach out to John Beilein. He won't wade into the cesspool of Chicago public and private school recruiting but he will get solid players and develop them. I think they need an experienced coach with a good track record, rather than trying to catch lightning in a bottle.

Here's a crazy one for you Sam - Amari Bailey, Class of 2022 and just entering 8th grade, has verbally committed to DePaul University. Young Mr. Bailey had de-committed from DePaul not long after he committed, and this week he committed to UCLA. He's still in the class of 2022, so we will see if this commitment sticks more than his commitment to the Blue Demons. 247sports.com/Player/Amari-Bailey-46078935/

That's one side of the argument. The other side is that despite an increase in talent, DePaul slipped from 7-11 in the Big East in 2019 to 3-15 this year. The offense looked ragged and stagnant for long stretches this season, which has been a frequent occurrence in this five year stretch under Coach DL. Five years in, and they have won only 35% of conference games. I like DL, but if I was DePaul administration, I would certainly be looking at who is out there and who we might be able to get as the next head coach. A year ago I stated my case for DePaul making a change at the head coach position. They didn't, and just ended up wasting a year and delaying the inevitable. They really need to get this hire right.

Does Ray Meyer have a grandchild in the coaching profession?

Coaching is such a tough profession. Leitao got close, but couldn't quite get over the hill. The Demons finished 19-17 in 2019 (their first winning season since 2007), and then in 2020 started 9-0 (and 12-1) with non-conference wins over Iowa and Minnesota (both on the road), Northwestern, and Texas Tech. In their 1st 4 Big East games, they lost by 1 point to Providence and in overtime at Villanova, and then things just fell apart.

From The Blue Demon Report on Twitter:
"Breaking News: Multiple sources have confirmed that AD Dewayne Peevy along with President Esteban, and COS Steve Stout, met with Kenny Payne in person in Milwaukee last night. The New York Knicks have said they are totally fine with Payne leaving for a HC position."

Two talented young players. Would have been nice to keep them for the incoming coach.
