Is he really that good? Or just that he’s been in one place for a long time.

If it's a Tony Paul article, it's probably calling Kampe the Speaker of All Things True and This Era's John Wooden.

One thing I have noticed about his teams is they start out strong than fade towards the end of the season. So many times they look like they should be able to win are conference and HLT in non-conference play but time we get to the end of the season they fall flat.

He's done a good job of getting talent to OU, but as you suggested, that have underachieved in recent years in conference tournament play. The Khalil Felder and Martez Walker teams had high scoring lead scorers and good supporting casts. Looking back, it's surprising that they weren't able to win a conference tournament with those groups. While the Grizzlies have had the upper hand in this rivalry and Kampe remains the darling of the Detroit News, it's worth noting that it's been awhile since Oakland's last NCAA tournament appearance. In fact, it's been a Big Dance drought for Michigan mid major basketball since the Titans made the NCAA tournament in 2012.

Isiah Jones had 2pts and 3 rebs in 10 mins of action. I took a look at the box score of that game, and that was one of three lines that jumped out at me. I also noticed that Rocket Watts scored 7 points in 22 minutes, going 3-8 from the floor (1-3 from 3). Dre Polk played only 3 minutes, going scoreless with a rebound. I don't know if he was injured during the game, but I expected him to be more productive. I know he didn't start. Jones was a guy I wish would have stuck around. I wanted Watts to commit to the Titans each time he hit the portal. Polk is a player I wanted to join the Titans since he was in high school. I would have thought each one of them would do better against a D2 program, even a good D2 program like Walsh. Especially in a game that OU ended up losing. The Grizz have some depth. They gave the Buckeyes a tough game, without getting much from Watts, Jones, or Polk. Polk played four minutes and actually fouled out in that time. Watts played 19 minutes and didn't score. Jones had the most impact of the three, playing 22 minutes and scoring 1 point to go along with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. The struggles of Watts on the mid major level baffle me.

He disappeared from the OU roster? Rocket played five scoreless minutes in OU's second game. Not sure if he was hurt or if his limited minutes were a coaching decision. Doesn't seem like the same player who closed out his freshman regular season with the Spartans by averaging 17 ppg over the last four. And I remember him scoring 24 against Detroit as a sophomore. I read that Kampe had announced at some function a few months back that Lorne Bowman would be taking a year away from the team this season, for personal reasons. He's had a rocky college experience.

Thanks for the info, Sam.
Bowman always looked to me like someone who would thrive at the mid-major level. Strong guard who'd rather shoot from midrange and get to the bucket / free throw line.

Probably nothing seems as far away for mid major coaches as signing day when they have a verbal commitment from a recruit who was/is a target of high majors. One thing that might help OU in this situation is that the founder of Hillcrest Prep has a long time relationship with Kampe. Also, another player from Hillcrest is on the OU roster. But I'm with you: there's no guarantee he enrolls up in Rochester. I'm sure that there are "middlemen" out there already planning their pitches to get him to decommit and sign with the high majors they represent. Sam, I’ll be honest that I say all that mostly in the hopes that if this kid is real good find for Oakland that they do end up losing him. Maybe it’s my jinxing of them and the situation because I’m petty haha Ever wonder what is happening with former Oakland/SMU/St. Louis commit Momo Cisse? Well, he did play his freshman year at St. Louis, averaging half a point and half a rebound per game while appearing in 15 games. After the season, he transferred to Trinity Valley Community College, where he is currently averaging 5 points and 5 rebounds per game, appearing in 13 games. He's still 6-11. I imagine some mid major will be offering him a scholarship for the 2024-25 season. www.tvccsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/cisse_mouhamadou_klw8?view=profile

Shout out to Oakland leading the HL at 7-2. They keep seemingly losing big talent and major minutes year after year and here they are at top of standing at half way point. I’ve officially lost my hate level for them and have a decent amount of respect for their program. Kampe included.

Oakland clinched at least a share of the HL title over the weekend. Kind of surprised by lack of chatter on the topic around these parts, but I guess so many of us are resigned in many ways nowadays.
I think its quite an achievement for Kampe and his program. This wasn't an especially heralded team he had this year, and here they are on the mountaintop. Congrats to them. Their first HL title in hoops since sharing in 2016-17.
And, it is Oaklands first Horizon League title since a few days ago when their swim team won Horizon League championship as well - and not just for Men's but also Womens team as well. They just collect banners up there with 3 HL titles won in as many days. (somewhere Vowels checks his bank statement online, smiling that the paycheck deposited again).
