Was a fun game to watch. Disappointing performance by the Buckeyes on the defensive end, I thought. They also managed to puke all over themselves in the final few minutes, but both teams showed out on offense all game long. I think they'll both be tough outs come tourney time.
Quality win for the Wolverines.

Don't know what happened, but Juwan Howard got tossed in the second half of Michigan's 79-66 win over Maryland. I'm not sure what set off his anger, but he had to be restrained by the assistant coaches while he was going after, I think, the Terps head coach.

Tough break for Phil Hubbard's old team. I still wouldn't count them out, though.

Smith doesn't impress me much. I think he makes a lot of bad decisions; his outside shot is OK but not great. Add that he's really small, and I don't see an NBA career. But he's also been 5 years in college. Time to move on.

I actually liked Smith more than the previous two posts. Thought he did a good job for Michigan. Solid 5.3/2.1 assist/turnover ratio, 43% from three. Had the tendency to make some bad decisions at times, but didn't strike me as a ball hog. That bad last game against UCLA does linger. I don't think he's an NBA player, but he'll make a good living overseas.
Plus, he kind of looks like an Ewok. How can you not like him?

The bottom line--seems I didn't quite finish my thought in the earlier post--is that Smith has already been 5 years in college. He may not want to stay in school. So what is there to do but enter the draft? If he gets drafted, cool. If not, see what other options are out there. As an aside, that 42% from three is, I think, misleading--even after this year, his career percentage is just 34%. He shot a pretty high percentage this year because he didn't shoot very many from three attempts per game, versus more than 6 per game (33.9%) his last year at Columbia. He's an OK three point shooter--you don't want to leave him unguarded out there. But he needs really good looks. That's not a real bad thing, as it's good if he knows not to shoot it too much (our Titan version of this has been Dwayne Rose, who hits a high percentage of his threes (42%) mainly by not shooting it unless he's really open and has lots of time). I don't think Smith's numbers translate into a guy who's a big three point asset in the NBA.

Averaged 8 points per game. Doesn't exactly scream NBA prospect, but the league isn't what it used to be. Plenty of guys who were underwhelming in college are making a good living in the NBA these days.

Eli Brooks is returning to Michigan for his additional year of eligibility. That's very good for the Wolverines, who would be a little light at point guard otherwise.

Franz Wagner is entering the NBA draft. I am told he is an expected lottery pick. Averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds during his Michigan career, shooting 46% from the floor and 32% from three. The NBA isn't what it used to be.
