www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/32453666/sources-southern-miss-join-sun-belt-conference-early-2023Southern Mississippi the last team from the old Metro Conference to exit the Conference. Could the Eagles be one of the last teams from Conference USA too before it explodes, if Old Dominion and Marshall also depart Conference USA? Metro Conference included teams like Louisville, Memphis State, Florida State, Cincinnati, South Carolina and Virginia Tech. Back in 1989 when they where a top 5 Conference, I wished we where in the Metro Conference (man I had high expectations back then). Only if, we had Derek Coleman and Mark Macon come to 6 mile and Livernois. The American Conference is the closest thing to the Metro Conference. Conference USA Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, Florida International, UTEP and Louisiana Tech. Getting to 8 football teams would require adding, Missouri State from the MVC, SHSU from the WAC and one other team preferably from the Texas. Their isn't lots of options for Conference USA. NMST has a nice basketball program to go with UTEP as travel partners. They can try to get some WAC playing football teams from the State of Texas, just don't see that happening. Forget the exit fees because all that money has to go into building up new members. If WAC goes on the offensive then end of Conference USA.

Philly doesn’t matter to the AAC, so Temple should get out | Mike Jensen Where should Temple go? There’s no viable option. But it’s clear that the American Athletic Conference will eventually care.
I don't think the AAC have many options, especially once Memphis and SMU leave for the B12.
Back in March 2017, media reports indicated that the conference was seriously considering adding one or more new members specifically as basketball upgrades. Wichita State, Dayton, and VCU were reportedly considered. AAC will return to the negotiation table with Dayton and VCU. Who will the two football only teams be to balance out the basketball teams? My guess is UConn and UMass, if they want to keep Temple from leaving to the MAC.

The Metro Conference of that era featured great basketball. I think it was channel 62 in Detroit that had a contract to broadcast their games locally. I got to see talented players like Alton Gipson of Florida State, and that tough trio from Virginia Tech: Dell Curry (Steph and Seth's dad) and Al and Perry Young. It was truly an underrated conference.

You know, even sans football, we could probably snag a CUSA invite right now. Just sayin...

Never expected that Conference USA could come apart so quickly. It actually seemed pretty stable and secure a few months ago, at least as far as I could see.

Whoa. The Southland could be in almost as much trouble as the CUSA. After being raided by the WAC last year for its best hoops programs, it’s now down to 6 teams, tho Texas a&m-commerce is supposed to join next year.
