Russell Harrison of Oklahoma State was denied eligibility this year ending his college career. Harrison started his college career in 2016-17 at NAIA Wayland Baptist. He then went JUCO and played as a JUCO sophomore in 2019-20 at Clarendon. He then transferred to Louisiana-Monroe and played there 2 years from 2020 to 2022. He was denied eligibility because he had exhausted his 6 years in which to play 4 plus his Covid year.

Per Jon Rothstein:
"How much has the landscape of college basketball changed? There is currently ONE Power Six (Power 5 and Big East) program that does not have a transfer on its roster: UCLA."

Interesting Twitter thread on former UIC player, Damaria Franklin's problems in trying to transfer from UIC to Memphis. Last year, in December, Franklin had 18 points and 14 rebounds against us in our 64-56 win at UIC and 17 points and 5 rebounds against us in our 80-67 win at Calihan Hall in January.

UIC has already proven it is quite willing to treat its student-athletes like meat - current and former.

I don't blame Coach Yak in this situation. I doubt he ran off Franklin, so why would he want to submit official paperwork to the NCAA saying he did? A coach is under no obligation to lie for a player, especially one who was on the roster for a year. Yak's responsibility is to his current players. Franklin played there for a year and received a scholarship for his efforts. That's all he was owed. If he wanted to leave, he can sit a year.

But if Coach Yak leaves he will be immediately eligible to coach and not have to wait a year (wait…now there is an idea!) And UIC got what it paid for. The player played for a year in return for the scholly. Seems like both parties fulfilled the bargain. Don’t see the need for the college to have a reserve clause that holds the player in place. Coaches cut guys loose occasionally so why can’t kids do the same? Tit for tat and mutuality etc. Besides coaches have years to ply their trade but all players have a limited window in which to hoop. They should sign off. What does UIC actually lose? An unhappy player? Folk change jobs all the time and generally no one can stop them (except in the instance CEO and C suite types with with crazy severance packages and inside info).

That's a good question. The NCAA is very inconsistent in its decisions regarding eligibility and waivers. It's as if different employees have different criteria. Also, it appears that someone high up in the NCAA offices HATES Oklahoma State.

AJ Oliver matriculated @ Clemson in 2016, why is Oliver eligible and Harrison isnt? Oliver enrolled early at Clemson in January 2017 - not September 2016. He played one season (2017-18) at Clemson and transferred in November 2018 when his mother lost her job there as the women's BB coach. He then sat out one year and resumed playing at ODU after its fall semester ended in 2019. He played 2.5 seasons at ODU, one of which was the Covid year. He's here as a grad student for one year. Last year, he was classified a redshirt senior at ODU. So, it appears that the NCAA may have decided that his 6th year ends in May 2023 which was 6 years after the end of his first semester at Clemson. Unlike Oliver, Harrison played a full season at Wayland Baptist in 2016-17 while Oliver did not play at Clemson.

Like all bureaucratic organizations, the NCAA seems to treat all schools are equal, but certain schools are more equal. Maybe someone should write a book about it, maybe "Basketball Farms".

Pretty sure Oliver was a class of 2016 recruit. His clock starts then. He took a redshirt year as a freshman in 2016-17.

I like to think it's due to the crack work of the Athletic Department's compliance staff.

" member of the 2017 signing class who enrolled early in January … redshirted the 2016-17 season, but went through practice with the Tigers in the spring semester and fully participated in workouts with strength & conditioning coach Mike Bewley … son of Audra Smith, former Clemson women’s basketball head coach and current South Carolina State women’s basketball head coach, and Anthony Oliver, both former Virginia players"
