Jose Perez, who transferred from Manhattan to West Virginia after the Manhattan coach resigned right before the start of this season, was denied a waiver by the NCAA. The NCAA did say he could practice with the team starting December 17, and gave him an extra year of eligibility. Perez is on his fourth school (Gardner Webb for two years and one year each at Marquette and Manhattan) and has never had to sit out before. You would think that the coach leaving would get him a waiver, but maybe since he never had to sit out in his two previous transfers, the NCAA took a hard line. Which is still weird, because others have been in that same boat and received waivers, I think. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/35266084/wvu-jose-perez-denied-immediate-eligibility-appeal-next

Seems like UDM since Ray Sr. hasn't had much luck with transfers, one has to wonder why a player would transfer in.

We haven't had transfers come in who really stood out and had a multi year impact like Howard, Holman, Chase, Lowe, or Jenkins. To the question, "why would a player transfer in," I suspect both Kul and Akec would think that their respective stints in Detroit were very worthwhile. It almost certainly increased the value of each in the overseas market. Akec is playing professionally in Cyprus, Kuol in Australia. And when you see what Liddell is doing this year, and maybe Jaden Stone if he can ever get healthy, I think there might be a lot of guys thinking Detroit is a destination where the coaches find ways to use players to their full potential and they can shine. By the way, I'm not sure it's ever been mentioned on this board, but Bul was Australia's National Basketball League Rookie of the Year last year, averaging 10.3 points and setting a league record for three pointers by a rookie. This year he's averaging 10.9 ppg for Cairns. Akec is averaging 13.8 points and 10.9 rebounds for Etha, Cyprus.

Akec and KUl certainly maybe have increased their "value" here, but who's to say at a school that got more press or exposure they might have had more value? Also, where is the impact JC'ers? like Nick Minnerath (Jackson CC) or Doug Anderson (Mott? Liddell is really a quality play, he's likely a one-and-done, tough-to-build program with one-year players, although there hasn't been much of a program built around AD's time here has there.

All fine, but your question was, "why would a player transfer in." I think the clear answer is, "gee, look at Kuol, Akec, and Liddell. Detroit's staff seem to know how to use/develop players to their full potential, and launch them on to professional careers. Look how much better all those guys did in Detroit than elsewhere." The points you're raising now are worth discussing, but they're not the points you raised before or that I responded to. So we've solved one question--there are definite reasons for players to transfer here. And given the current environment and the portal, that's a big deal. Now, jucos, and keeping players beyond one year (both Kuol and Akec had another year of eligibility that that each decided to forego) are two other issues.

There are several others who transferred in and did well - Fraser, Johnson, Rose to name some others. MD has the ability to see the talent/potential in a player who's not performing somewhere else and maximizing that here.
Problems with that plan are: 1. MD doesn't know these guys as well as PW knew his Detroit guys (come home) transfers and results of that include: a. Sometimes they come in and are either a cancer (the big from Toronto who started at Center early last season, wanted to become a perimeter player, and then quit when told he didn't belong on the wing) b. Or someone like Parks. When I posted that he was basically a cheerleader, it's not because he's a cancer. He's actually a good guy who supports his team. But he's not in shape. He's not serious about putting in the time to become a player. I got this from a good source - I didn't just make it up. Not saying bad things about him - just saying his personality traits aren't going to turn him into the big guy we want (and need) c. or someone like Waterman, who is soft 2. You can't build chemistry when you're starting over ever year with so many new guys
"Fan" is wrong. As others have pointed out, there are very good reasons to come to U-D as a transfer. MD has a knack for finding a way to help you blossom. The problem is -- are these guys just using U-D as a launching pad to a professional career? We need guys who want to win HERE. Win Titles HERE.

Maybe, I didn't explain myself well, but certainly, if a player comes here to add to his education it's a home run, but to come here for at year to add to his resume to go pro, with the system in place, I don't think that's going to happen, Parks is a good example. But uofdfan1983 made a big/big point, in the past "come home" transfers made big impacts, and there have been few "come home" guys. Oakland has had some, and it looks like Stan Heath at EMU has been trending that way.

I would expect that the success that Australian native Kul had under Davis had at least an influence on the decisions by Akec and Stone to attend U-D. Too bad for us that Akec didn't stick around for another year, but I am glad he is having success.
The individual success of guys like Akec and Kul, and now Liddell, is probably the best selling point we have right now for transfers. If we start adding some more wins, all the better.

I suspect Watts didn't want to come here because he wanted to be the man, have a chance to really be the scoring guard for the first time in his career, and he knew here those shots would go to Davis. Anyway, doesn't seem like a big loss not to have won out on Watts and Bowman.
I don't have any idea what recruiting pitches work on today's players and their parents, but I think a kid looking to come home would notice the success of transfers. Liddell never got going at Texas, and then he goes to Alabama State. Now, for all the problems of the Horizon, and notwithstanding some big non-conference wins for the SWAC this year, the Horizon is still a much better conference than the SWAC. Yet while Liddell was good there (10.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg), he was nothing like he's done here. Is it all, primarily, or even a little the doing of our staff and system? I don't know. But whatever, being at UofD has clearly unlocked something for Liddell. And his string of double-doubles is coming against very solid competition--two AAC teams and a good CUSA team, and the defending co-champs of the HL.
Akec came here from USF, in a tougher conference, Kuol from Cal Baptist, probably still a lower program, and both did far better than before. Matt Johnson averaged 1.7 points at a good A10 school, came here and was HL 6th Man of the Year. Dwayne Rose came from a nearby school (Toledo) that we play regularly and that plays lots of common foes, and did much better here. Waterman came here from a program with even greater struggles (Canisius) and got to do what he wanted to do, play guard, park in the corner, and shoot threes. Lots of different scenarios, yet with the bottom line that most of our transfers of the past 3 years (including this year) have out pretty well, unless injuries intervened. If I were a player looking to transfer and Coach Davis came recruiting, that would matter to me.
The problem is that we're not keeping them beyond a year, or at most two. Liddell has another year of eligibility, but will he stick around for it? Jayden Stone has 2 more years of eligibility. Damezi Anderson has another year. Jordan Phillips has at least one more year of eligibility. Moss has another year. If those guys stick around, we could be quite good. Tankersley and Jones have looked like guys that can contribute going forward, LeGreair is a serviceable back-up, I still hope Sonny Johnson can get healthy and if, after all his injuries, he's 85% of the player he was originally projected to be, he'll still be a solid Horizon League players. The only guys we definitely lose are Oliver and Davis.
But can we keep the rest together? Of course, this is a growing problem for coaches all over college ball--we're not unique. But we have been hit harder than many. Gotta get most of these players to stick with the program. I suspect better fan support might help.

Perhaps with AD graduating it may be easier for those guys to stay the second year.

Five players from Georgia State hit the portal today. GSU struggled this year but it has been a very good mid major in recent years.
Edit: Make it six. Another just entered.
