This story has just begun circulating, I'm sure there is a margin of truth to it. The West Coast has always seemed to feel they are holier than the rest of the country. This really comes down to bad management (the board), a weak Commissioner, and the pie is just so big. The Pac-12 needs to cut its 4 members loose and close shop. Washington State and Oregon State could join the MW, it's a good level for them, Stanford could go independent, and play the Army and Navys of the world with a big game with ND each year, Cal seems the odd man out, maybe become the West Coast NYU and go D3.

In this, the final season of PAC12 basketball as we have known it, the league has been plagued by the inconsistencies that have been commonplace in recent seasons. On recent back to back nights, the inconsistency was clear.
December 9 started out as a good night for the PAC12. Arizona solidified their #1 ranking with a home blowout of #23 Wisconsin. Utah beat #14 BYU. And in the biggest win of the night for the conference, Washington upset #7 Gonzaga at home. But then California lost to a Butler team picked near the bottom of the Big East, Villanova handled UCLA, Oregon State went life and death in a home game with Utah Valley, and Arizona State lost to San Diego. One step forward, one step back.
Then came December 9. The Good: Colorado 90, #15 Miami 63. Wow. The Bad: USC, a 14.5 point home favorite, lost to Long Beach State.
I pick on the PAC12, but I am very sorry to see the league break up. There is so much history being discarded. I'll miss them, and not just because they always helped out with the Scoreboard.

The PAC 12 still technically exists, so I'll put this update here. Mark Madsen, the Cal coach, received a contract extension despite posting a first year record of 13-18, 9-11. He's now under contract through the 2029-30 season. The Bears did greatly improve on their 2-18 conference record in 2022-23. I would guess that the real reason for the extension is the speculation that Stanford is planning on firing their head coach, and Madsen, who was a star player for the Cardinals, might be tempted to leave Cal for his alma mater. One thing that it seems PAC 12 teams have become known for over the past decade is throwing out big, seemingly premature, extensions to coaches. Good for the coaches, but except for Arizona, those extensions haven't really paid off at other schools, such as USC, Oregon State, Arizona State, etc. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/39716819/cal-extends-coach-mark-madsen-2030
