Arizona State takes advantage of a fertile local recruiting area. Lots of homegrown talent in Arizona, as well as prep schools that attract national talent. This young man is a Texas native who recently transferred to a prep school in Phoenix. n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2021/demari-williams-238183

Oregon, backed by that big time Nike money, has been a recruiting force for awhile now. It's not a surprise to see them land 7 foot Nathan Bittle, a five star recruit in the class of 2021. Bittle is an Oregon native, currently prepping at Prolific Prep. n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2021/nathan-bittle-233204

Jon Rothstein's Preseason Power Rankings for the PAC 12.
UCLA Arizona State Oregon Stanford Arizona USC Colorado Utah Washington Cal Washington State Oregon State
The PAC 12 has been down for a few years, and the conference has suffered some brutal losses in the non-conference. UCLA was among the best of a bad lot last year and brings back some good players. Arizona State hasn't been ranked this high in the preseason in what seems like a long time. Oregon is my pick to win the conference. Stanford is trending up, Arizona is kind of stuck. Andy Enfield of USC needs to put together a really good season; he's under .500 in conference play since he arrived from Dunk City. Coach Tinkle at Oregon State might be in serious trouble if he has a last place finish.

I always like the term "misconduct." For me it conjures up images of such offenses as running with scissors, making farting noises during class, and pulling the hair of the girl seated in front of you.

Arizona, still recruiting well despite the threat of major sanctions, won a recruiting battle and got four star recruit Shane Nowell. Shane's older brother Jaylen was conference player of the year at the University of Washington, and the Huskies were considered the favorite to land the kid, who is from Seattle. n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2021/shane-nowell-228598

Tough times in Seattle. UW is 0-3, getting blown out by Baylor, UC-Riverside, and Utah. And today it was announced that Naz Carter, one of their top returning players from last year, was leaving school to turn pro. Carter averaged 12 ppg last season, but had not played this year due to being suspended.

I've been critical of the PAC 12 the past couple of years, but that's because they deserve it. The conference has woefully underperformed as a whole. This season isn't off to a great start for the league. Arizona State and Oregon State lost to mid majors last night, and OSU lost their previous game to Wyoming. Washington State is 4-0, but their wins are against mid majors and Oregon State. Washington lost to Baylor by 34, UC-Riverside by 15, and Utah by 14. Arizona is 4-0 against nondescript mid majors. ASU's best win in their 3-2 record is Rhode Island. USC's best win is BYU. UCLA's best win is BYU and they also lost to San Diego State and had to go overtime to beat Pepperdine. Oregon is 3-1 with a loss to Missouri and a win over Seton Hall. Stanford is 2-2 with wins over Alabama and North Carolina A&T.
It's early yet, and some teams could turn it around. What's clear is that the PAC 12 was not interested in challenging themselves in the non-league portion of the schedule this year, and when they had had opportunities for good wins, they haven't taken advantage.
