So all the non-conference schedules are in, except for IUPUI. They appear to be the only HL team not playing in an exempt event, so they'll have just 10 non-conference games. We've got 6 of those, 5 on the road. My guess the remaining 4 will include 2 non-DI teams at home, and then 1 other home and one other road game with mid-to-low majors. Right now their only known home game is SIU-Edwardsville.

That home game against St. Joe's is nice.

And IUPUI is out, the last Horizon non-conference schedule. Not much to brag about, with just 4 home games, including two non-D1 teams. Their big guarantee games are at Gonzaga, Washington State, & Purdue.

For those counting, there are 21 regular season MAC v. Horizon games. Every Horizon team plays at least one MAC opponent except for Northern Kentucky.
This makes the periodically fan-floated idea of a MAC v. Horizon "challenge" rather superfluous. Essentially, such a challenge is played every year, with far more than a mere ten games. Cleveland State leads the way with 5 MAC opponents this year. That won't help the Horizon, since CSU is one of our weaker teams. Preseason favorite Oakland has 4 MAC games on the schedule, but the other top teams, UIC and NKU, total just 1 between them. Four Horizon teams (Detroit, CSU, Oakland, and WSU) will face Toledo, and 4 (Detroit, CSU, Oakland, and Milwaukee) will face Western Michigan. Three Horizon teams (YSU, CSU, and WSU) face Kent State, and 3 (UIC, Milwaukee, and Green Bay) face Northern Illinois.

The NCAA is allowing schools to add an extra exhibition game, with receipts going toward Puerto Rico hurricane relief.
Two Horizon teams have taken advantage to play DI foes: Milwaukee will play at crosstown rival Marquette on Oct. 22. And Oakland has upgraded its Oct. 29 closed scrimmage with Central Michigan to an exhibition, and then scheduled another exhibition against the local NAIA team, Rochester.
Smart moves, I think.
Also, UIC added an exhibition against a local NAIA school, St. Francis, and YSU picked up an exhibition with Thiel College.

Northern Kentucky will reportedly play Dayton in a "secret scrimmage." The Titans are reported to have a "secret scrimmage" at Akron.
I assume there are other secret scrimmages--Cleveland State, Green Bay, IUPUI, Milwaukee, UIC, Wright State and YSU all have room for one.

Scroll down for al the Horizon League "secret" scrimmages - I guess they're not secrets anymore! Y State was left blank below, but they're playing Niagara 10/29 at Y State

Chris Dobbertein at Blogging the Bracket tries to rank schedules, using a weighted four-year average for each team. He ranks OU and Detroit as having the toughest non-conference schedules. He also suggests that the Horizon has significantly overscheduled this year, with UIC and Detroit most guilty. That will hurt the conference RPI unless the teams start winning these games. I'm not sold on Dobbertein's method, but it's interesting.
