He was an excellent catch for Coach Ray, too bad it didn't work out for him or the school. There were a couple of games where he really excelled. Frankly, a mid-major like UDM Had to take a chance on him.

No, any mid-major did not have to take a chance on him. We are U-D, not "any" mid-major. We knew he was not someone interested in going to class when we recruited him. He had problems while here but we've had (unfortunately) players here who have done much more damage than he ever did (what was his name?, the guy who brought the SMD lawsuit against U-D and Bacari, for example). And Paris has worked hard to get where he's at so kudos to him.
I guess my point is this: we are U-D. We need to know our identity and recruit accordingly. The kind of guys that PW recruited are the kind of guys we should be building a program around. Having said that: I realize it's become even more difficult for MD to recruit in today's environment and he's had to reach for short-term solutions. Some of them have worked out and as a result, we have an opportunity right now to win our league and earn an NCAA bid. But longterm, signing Paris Bass or depending on Grad Transfers is not how you build the U-D Program.

This was his hometown school (Birmingham Seaholm HS) and if memory serves me, a parent who was a police officer in the Detroit. Those were factors that would lead most of us to take a chance. It didn't work out, but to my knowledge he never did anything to harm the school, just did not like class very much and wasn't much on discipline. We have had far worse over our history. Some of stars were not angels. Mid-majors have to take chances to succeed. Ray was no exception. He did quite well with many of them. I wished him well when left and do so now.

Good for Paris Bass, I remember him blowing past James Harden for a lay up at some type of Nike camp one summer.

Chuck, the damage done by players like Bass shows up after they've left and the program gets into APR and academic issues. They're gone, but the damage lingers. The probation Davis and the Titans faced in his second season reflected on nothing done by that coach or those student-athletes, but on messes left by previous classes and coaches.

Frankly, a mid-major like UDM Had to take a chance on him. Exactly. It made plenty of sense for the Titans to take a chance on Paris. Local kid, super talented, with his red flags being possible academic issues. Wasn't like he had a record of criminal behavior or suspensions from high school. I think most coaches would take that risk. In fact, coaches all over the country, at all levels, take on those kind of risks with every recruiting year. The Titan program isn't in the position where we can just pick and choose whoever we want to play here, and we haven't been that kind of place in a long time. So we, like a lot of programs, take chances on players. We were right to take a chance on Bass, just like we were right to take a chance on Eli Holman, Chris Blake, and others. (Man, I wish Blake could have kept it together; that guy could play.) Heck, I think we were right to take a chance on Pat Ack, even though all he did after he got here was get suspended and not work hard. This is a very difficult recruiting landscape for mid majors, and the Titans don't exactly have a lot to set us apart from others.

I would take the Paris Bass's of the world any day over the retreads floating around D1 basketball these days. D1 coaches these dates really have become JUCO coaches, starting over each year.

That team with Chris Blake, Ray Mccallum, Eli Holman, Nick Minnerath, Jason Calliste and a young Evan Bruinsma was very talented. They should've won more games.

Unfortunately for Paris, he did not see action in the Suns vs Pistons game at LCA on Sunday. It doesn't appear he was active for that game. On the season he's played seven minutes and scored six points. He's on his second ten day contract, so the next step is either being released or signed for the rest of the season. www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/3062842/paris-bass

I sat behind Jerry Guinane today at the Oakland game, he was a Harding recruit and played two years under Vitale. He recently retired and moved back to the Detroit area.

Corey Allen had back to back 29 pt. Tourney games leading Georgia State to the NCAA Tournament again. He was very efficient and a true leader. Had a very nice Frosh year here and was Horizon Frosh of the year. His Soph year he had to take a back seat to JJJ so the Jackson’s could chase the league. It was disappointing when he left but hard to disagree with his decision.
