Just keeping an eye on some of our 2013 targets who went elsewhere.
In his second game, AJ West has moved into the starting lineup for Nevada. He collected six points, five rebounds, and 3 blocks in 24 minutes against Long Beach State on Saturday.
Erik Peck scored one point for Purdue in their loss to Ohio State. He did have six rebounds, though. His rebounding numbers are decent, but his offensive game has gone south as the level of comp picked up.
Martez Walker, one of Reggie's favorites, played a season high 18 minutes and scored six points in the Texas win over Rice on Monday. He's averaging 1.9 points per game and struggling a bit with his shot. Texas as a team is better than was anticipated this year.
Mark Alstork is scoring almost 8 points per game for Ball State.
Ibrahim Djambo is playing 13 minutes per game for Clemson, but only scoring 2 ppg and only shooting 31% from the field. Only played six minutes in their 30 point win over VMI on Monday.
Jalen Adams, a freshman guard from Saginaw, has not played for St. Bonnie this season. I am not sure what his status is.
Shaq McKissic is in the regular rotation with ASU, and played 30 and 36 minutes in their last two games. He scored 18 points on Saturday against UC-Irvine.
Sai Tummala has a limited role coming off the bench for ASU, scoring 2.4 ppg.

I will also be keeping on eye on how much playing time Brandan Kearney gets at ASU. I was told by someone in our athletic department that when he left MSU he asked us if we were interested in him and we told him that we didn't have a scholarship available so he would have to come as a walk on.

Good point. Kearney just became eligible for ASU and has played 11 mins in two games. They are expecting big things from him, though. I had heard the same thing about his interest in us and our lack of a scholarship.

Shaq Mckissic has regained his starting role and scored 12 points with nine rebounds in a win over Washington State. Sai Tummala played seven minutes and scored two points. Kearney played six minutes and did not score.
AJ West is playing very big for Nevada. He eased his way into the season in the first two games he was eligible, and has had games of 12 and 12 and 15 and 9 in the last two games, both wins. He's averaging 9 points, eight rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game overall this year, in 26 minutes per game.
Ibrahim Djambo has gone scoreless in four of the past six games for Clemson, totaling only four points during that span.

While many (including me) find it interesting to check in on these guys now and again, we do need to remember, too, that had we signed them, someone would have to go - Grant, Williams, Ackerman, Bass or Jenkins. I don't know where we'd be this year without the guards after Jason left. And though we'd be better this year with most of these players than with Bass/Jenkins on the bench,, I'm not sure we'd be better long run if Bass/Jenkins/Ackerman (especially the first 2) fulfill expectations.

Yeah, the "what if" game is always tricky. Still, I would like to have AJ West. I know TJ, whose opinion I really value, was not high on West, but I think he would be a key contributor for the next two seasons with the Titans. I'd probably rather have him than Grant, especially given the play of Williams and the similarity of his game and Grant's. I like Grant a lot as a player, but I'd feel more confident about the 2014-15 front court with West joining Patrick A and Patrick O in replacing NJ, Evan, etc. Maybe AFS and Hogan will be able to step up as freshmen and make a strong contribution, but neither of them would seem to be the defensive presence that West appears to be. Jenkins and Bass both seem very talented, but they also seem to be very similar. We don't have a guy like West projected to be on the roster for next season, which is why he's one of my "I wish we would have gotten him" guys. Not that I mean to imply that I have a major problem with the roster we have. I like our team a lot.

Not that I mean to imply that I have a major problem with the roster we have. I like our team a lot. West's issues were strictly "off the court" stuff that also affected his attitude and desire to play ball. I'm not saying he wasn't talented, but my info was relayed to me by a former coach of his. Based on the affect of a few other problem players we have previously had on our team, I was hoping not to have to go through all that type of stuff again. I'm very happy that the young man may have got his head straight and is using his abilities to the fullest - after all, that's what it's all about, preparing these young men for life.

Yeah, I remember that your West concerns were about off the court issues rather than ability and talent. I guess I just thought that having had problems with a few head cases previously, Coach would not have been pursuing West unless he was very confident those issues were in the past. And I was willing to take a bit of a risk with an effective front court guy.
In any case, like you I am happy to see that West apparently has his head on straight and is doing well so far.

West with 11 points, nine boards, and 5 blocks in Nevada's win Wednesday night over arch rival UNLV. Probably not a coincidence that 8-8 Nevada is 4-1 since West became eligible.
Ibrahim Djambo was scoreless and failed to get a rebound in seven minutes in Clemson's loss to FSU tonight. I think it's safe to say this season is not going the way he thought it would. That college choice is so critical for JUCO's. You've only got two years of D1 to play so you don't want to make a mistake.

I'm going to stop posting updates on AJ West unless something drastic happens. He got 11 points and seven rebounds to go with 3 blocks in a win over Utah State Saturday night. Nevada is 5-1 since West was declared eligible. Looks like he'll be productive all season so I'll just say one last time that I would have loved to see him in a Titan uniform this year and next. Would be nice to have had him on Saturday against the big dude from Oakland. Him and NJ on the court at the same time probably would have meant no layups for the opposition. Of course, the Titans made a good pitch to him; we can't get them all.
Djambo is still struggling, so I won't provide more updates on him unless he breaks out of it. In Clemson's upset win over Duke on Saturday, Djambo played two minutes, with his only recorded stat a personal foul. Unless he's really happy with the Clemson campus and his classes, he is probably having second thoughts about joining the Tigers. I don't know how close we ever were to landing him, but his 6-10, 215 frame would have made a difference with the Titans.

Nothing dramatic has happened with West individually: He's averaging eight points, eight rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game. The big change has been with the team's performance: Nevada has lost five in a row.
Ibrahim Djambo continues to struggle at Clemson. He got a DNP in the most recent game. Prior to that, he played 14 minutes with two points and one rebound, and 15 minutes with no points and no rebounds. I'm really surprised he is having so little impact, because he looked like a real solid contributor.
Martez Walker scored his season high of 12 points in a blow win over OK State on February 11. He's averaging 3.5 ppg on the season and he's played in every game but one. He appears to be laying a good foundation for a solid career.
Mark Alstork's scoring has slipped to 6 ppg and his shooting percentage is down to 33%. He's playing 24 minutes per game, but Ball State is struggling at 4-20.
Shaq McKissic is scoring a steady eight points per game for ASU.
Brandan Kearney is barely playing for ASU, and has scored two points all month.
Sai T has only played 78 total minutes for the Sun Devils, but as a sophomore he has two years after this to make an impact.

Vince Hunter, a guy we recruited hard, was named Freshman of the Year in Conference USA. He is at UTEP.

Here's a surprise.
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 4m Arizona State's Shaquielle McKissic has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, per the school. Big news for the Sun Devils.
