Paragraphs please, people. Paragraphs are the friend of easy-to-read writing.

Andy Bronkema he is still coaching. Got another team again making a run twice in the time UDM made a dumpster runs. I wouldn't be upset with Bronkema becoming the next coach at Six and Livernois. He's certainly had enough success at the D2 level to warrant consideration. However, over the past several years, multiple D1 jobs (EMU, CMU, WMU, Detroit) in the state have come open. I'm wondering why no one has snatched him up.

Yes, paragraphs please.
IMO, using Detroit for Athletics only does nothing to insult the Mercy Sisters. Does anyone know why that practice was ended?

Yes, paragraphs please. IMO, using Detroit for Athletics only does nothing to insult the Mercy Sisters. Does anyone know why that practice was ended? That decision was due to a consulting company recommendation. They believed that by making it the "Detroit Mercy Titans" all the inconsistent references to the school name would diminish. It didn't really change things much IMO. Meanwhile, many schools (Green Bay, Milwaukee, Omaha, Kansas City, etc.) adopted a common sense branding approach for their athletic teams, i.e., they are referred to simply by the name of their city.

Nothing in TP's piece is factually untrue, as far as I can tell, but it certainly is written in the tone of someone who is not fully objective. PTC makes a good point: it should be disclosed in articles like this that Paul is an OU employee. In a more traditional media environment, he wouldn't be able to hold both jobs; the Newspaper wouldn't allow it. The News wouldn't hire a Ford press relations person to cover the auto industry. And if their auto beat guy got a job with General Motors, he'd have to stop working in that capacity for the newspaper.
My main issue with TP is that he seems very sloppy when it comes to "confirming" his information. Seems like a lot of it he gets from message boards and Kampe, and he doesn't appear to work too hard to verify either source.
The article is full of hard truths, but there's nothing that we haven't talked about on this board regularly. While it is better to have someone covering the local college basketball scene than no one at all, I personally find very little value in TP's work.

That decision was due to a consulting company recommendation. They believed that by making it the "Detroit Mercy Titans" it would help all the inconsistent references to the school name. It didn't really change things at all IMO. That's not just your opinion, it's factually accurate. In fact, the only thing that might have changed was what you predicted: we are referred to as simply "Mercy" more and more often. Which may have been the true intention behind the rebranding all along.

UD Shawn: Glad you enjoyed my humorous approach. Thx. Sorry truly about age thing. You seem so youthful in outlook I just assumed. My bad. I made no assumptions about your family or donation history either as far as I can tell but you are still not in my will. Hope you understand. BTW tho. People think we are a hospital? Who thinks UNIVERSITY of Detroit Mercy is a hospital? Really? Do people call 911 and say” Take me to Detroit Mercy, stat?” Anyone think there is a UDM medical center anywhere around here? Do ambulances circle the campus looking for our emergency room? Come to think of it…..is there an actual hospital still named Mercy in the metro area anymore? Also I didn’t really say anything about your donation history but I infer the name didn't stop you from making a pledge. Well done. Me either. So there is no issue at all, why are we arguing?! Still awaiting data on stat re: kids (infer meant as male student athletes, right?) won’t hoop for Mercy….which is NOT the name. But cool. Also, I guess I might ask why not rebrand as something totally fresh entirely. I mean we all know that old U of D almost went bust and was only saved from embarrassment by a bunch of weak sisters called Mercy. So let’s shed that image once and for all. A compromise: Keep the University from U of D and the Mercy for Mercy College and go with Mercy University. Bingo, fresh start wiping away recent history in an instant and the shame of having to be rescued by kind Sisters. I mean why go with that old old name…we could be brand new. Clean slate unburdened by our recent so painful past (BB wise only that is). Creative destruction! Move fast and break things! Let’s go MU! And if a few high school boys won’t come here to play, well we might be able to become a women’s hoops powerhouse just like Mercy High School in Farmington Hills (and as we once were in AIAW/ North Star Conference and could be again in the HL….go Coach Kate!) Look at the fans and ink Tennessee, South Carolina, Iowa and LSU get for women’s hoops. Interest is peaking. Might be the next I phone or Twitter X kinda thing. Let us catch that wave! I can hear our opponents anguished cries now: Mercy! Mercy. Mercy!

I can hear our opponents anguished cries now: Mercy! Mercy. Mercy! I mentioned this previously on the thread specific to branding, but prior to the consolidation, Mercy College seriously considered changing their name. The reason was their marketing research information suggested it was discouraging males from considering attending the school. The reference for this is the book “Legacy of Excellence: a Continuing History of Jesuit and Mercy Higher Education in Detroit,” page 81. The name was deemed by some to be adverse to the healthy growth of the college. One proposal was to rename the school “Manning College.” (Sr. Mary Carmelita Manning was institutional in establishing the college’s School of Nursing.) Your proposal to rename the school Mercy University would completely ignore the fact that the institution has a Jesuit affiliation. I would advocate a new name: the Jesuit-Mercy University of Detroit, general brand would be University of Detroit. Notre Dame does not use their official name for day-to-day general branding if you want to see a common sense approach adopted by another Catholic institution of higher learning.

I was listening to the Mike Valenti show featuring Rico Beard on the way to work today...2-3PM. Valenti and Rico are both MSU grads and they were discussing Tom Izzo, they were saying he needs to shake up his coaching staff, one of them said that Mark Montgomery might be getting the UofD job so there might be a coaching vacancy on the MSU staff soon. Valenti proceeded to go off, he stated that the UofD job was the worst D1 job in the entire country, I disagree with that statement and it hurt my feelings.

Breaking News! HBCU All-Stars John McLendon NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year - Donte’ Jackson – Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Grambling State University.
He should get an interview, I believe...for the worst D I job in America. Valenti is a bigger joke than Tony Paul.

I think that Donte’ Jackson is a nice enough guy. I just don’t think that he has enough fire/drive for what UD needs at this time.

We need a promoter a do everything guy. He will be on his own and will not get much help from the Administration. The quotes about this being the worst D1 job in the country are correct! That doesn’t mean it has to stay that way but right now this so called selection committee isn’t doing the next hire any favors. Fire Vowels and does anyone know if Taylor has a clue?

I think I posted previously that Dr. Taylor does have a clue. He and his wife are basketball fans. He was a student at Memphis in the late 1980s to mid-1990s when Larry Finch was the coach. He would frequently go to high school games to watch recruits that Coach Finch was evaluating; e.g., Penny Hardaway. Like many fans used to do here in the 1970s and 1980s. Or like current fans who go to the State playoff games to watch the up and coming talent in Michigan.
