It might be interesting to get opinions on the 5 best and 5 worst men's basketball coach hires since Bob Calihan (1969). Five Best: Dick Vitale, Smokey Gaines, Perry Watson, Ray McCallum, Jim Harding. Five Worst: Brain Alexander, Mike Davis, Ricky Birdsong, Willie McCarter, Don Sicko. Can I assume "Brain" Alexander is Bacari? As someone who suffered through the Harding years, I would not put him in the top five.

Five Best: Dick Vitale, Smokey Gaines, Perry Watson, Ray McCallum, Jim Harding. Five Worst: Brain Alexander, Mike Davis, Ricky Birdsong, Willie McCarter, Don Sicko. Here's a different metric: Of the Titans' last 10 coaches, who ended their tenures here with a winning career record? Harding - Hired 1969 Vitale - Hired 1973 Gaines - Hired 1977 Watson - Hired 1993 The following coach produced 5 winning seasons, but left with a losing career record at U of D. McCallum - Hired 2008 (20-14 in 2009-10, 17-16 in 2010-11, 22-14 in 2011-12, 20-13 in 2012-13, 16-15 in 2015-16) The following coaches produced at least one season with a winning record, but left with losing career records at U of D. NcCarter - Hired 1979 (14-12 in 1979-80) Sicko - Hired 1982 (16-12 in 1984-85) Byrdsong - Hired 1988 (15-12 in 1992-93) Davis - Hired 2018 (12-10 in 2020-21) Only Bacari Alexander failed to produce even one winning season after this hire in 2016.

John Mulroy was really just a caretaker. I think he gets a pass.

I saw that. The coaching carousel has him taking the assistant's job at FAU. Jim Christian is supposed to get the Canisius job. As tight lipped as people are now in Calihan, who knows?

I can’t help but wonder if some people at the university and the trustees are looking at the cost of D1 athletics, the massive changes in college athletics, and questioning if continuing is truly in the best interest of the institution.
I’m not saying this is happening and they are going to announce an end of sports or transition to D2 anytime soon, but they’d be negligent not to have those discussions. With NIL, eased transfer rules, and the possibility of schools paying athletes directly in the future (see the Dartmouth basketball litigation), the landscape is ultra competitive. The cost of coaches salaries, facilities, scholarships, trainers and other staff, nutrition, etc. It’s astronomical when you think about it. Add to the fact that big time programs have the benefit of apparel deals, gate money, loyal donors. How does a small school like UDM compete in that environment? I suppose some people would say recent examples of success like Saint Peter’s and now even Oakland prove small programs can find a way. Although, I don’t feel either of those or other success stories are analogous to UDM.
The odds of UDM discontinuing D1 athletics right now are very low, but they’re not zero. Every day we don’t have a coach does make me wonder. One thing I’m sure of, this next coach very well could be our last chance to right the ship.
