Plus one Mole. This old thinking is what is causing our demise. Listen...drop the Mercy. We all need to demand it.

Dick Vitale dreamed about a Midwestern Big East-type league based around like Jesuit schools, the MidWest City league came close Just check where those schools are now in the basketball world compared to UDM

I want us to hire a coach who can make us successful and relevant despite any perceived disadvantage in our name.

You guys are so out of touch, it's sad. Turn up the hearing aids...kids don't want to play for a Mercy. Period. The name is stupid. We tried the Mercy crap for almost 30 years it's obviously not working. Revert back see how it goes...but please, continue to alienate the younger alumni and fans...

No one is saying that all religiously themed college names are bad. “University of Detroit Mercy” however, is a stupid name. It’s an added word to what was (and could be) a fine brand. Doesn’t make any sense in print or in conversation. Also, Mercy just has a very weak symbolic charge. I can appreciate God’s mercy for me as a Christian but still suggest that the word tacked on to U of D is stupid.

LOL. First of all..reading and hearing are different things kiddo. Though I’m sort of put off by your views on the disabled and aged among us. I read we boomers are supposed to transfer all our wealth to you whippersnappers when you unplug us, show some deference or we might cut you outta our wills. That view is Neanderthal ya’ know? That the aspersion on Mercy wafts of sexism to boot! Get yourself outta the dark ages young man. But maybe we should ask Coach Kate her view? Shrill guys like you is why I turn off my hearing aid. The feed back your voice generates in my ears gives me a headache Breaking news: Brand ain't the problem, resources are. I seem to recall that Perry Watson and Ray McCollum somehow miraculously managed to win under the UDM Banner. Focus on “brand” is a red herring. My guess is that the monied alums, if we had any mega million alums at all, have long go left this vale of tears and there is simply no real life angst about the UDM name except here (which isn't IRL of course, see I’m hip to the lingo even with my hearing aid off). No faucet is turning on with any name change. Come on guys, if a no name like Oakland can succeed as can others with so called “weak brands” so can we. Why not give a bit a thought to MAYBE boosting the name we have instead of shrekking about something that happened 40 years ago? I’m mystified by the nostalgic brain lock on that, especially from these young sprouts who weren’t even alive before the merger that Mercifully saved the school. No sense of history and gratitude these youngin’s all! Besides it seems like a lot of hospitals raise a lot of dough…maybe we should just ride that wave! And I question the consistent “insight” about how players won’t come here because of the name. Did Perry and Ray fill their rosters with ghosts? Willie Green, Rashad Phillips, Dez Ferguson, Eli Holman, Danny Whye, Juawan Howard, Jermaine Jackson, Stretch Carter, Greg Wendt, the list is a mile long. That dog don’t hunt dude. Is Coach Kate using smoke and mirrors to field a team? Which player told you they did not want to attend because Mercy is in the name, such a straw man set up. Silly. Seems more like a personal prejudice and WM privilege speaking than a marketing analysis. And besides WE ARE THE TITANS remember? Totes manliness! I don’t think Perry and Kate close deals by saying…come join the Mercy, they say come be Titans, right? Do we do exit interviews or something to find out why player’s don’t come here? If what you say is true, why is overall enrollment up over the recent past? Query: why did you attend UD-Mercy? Though I think I’m glad you did! . And Shawn might be alienated but all the younger alums of the law school I have met and dealt with seem quite pleased with UDM name so maybe the alienation is in Shawn’s head…might be hearing things dude. But I’m happy the Shawn-ster isn't worried about alienating we oldsters even though we have all the dough! That’s truth to power for sure. Cut off nose to spite face much? But don’t come asking me Shawn, I won’t hear you! Lol

I have to amend my prior….old brain freeze, I think Wendt and Stretch might have preceded the merger? If so sorry.

Look. There's an easy and fast (and at least short-term solution). One that PW asked for and received. One that would probably only require Dr. Taylor's blessing because it's only branding: for Athletics only, just go back to Detroit. Simple solution, at least to help the new coach get started in the immediate future. That is a campaign worth pushing because it wouldn't take long to accomplish, and receive a positive impact. Even if it doesn't impact recruits, it will reinforce who we are to those outside of the 6 Mile/Livernois fence: The University of Detroit, the school that DeBusschere, Haywood, Willie Green and more all attended. Not something new and indistinguishable.

Tony Paul is a part-time employee of Oakland. He does the color commentary for TV for some games. Coaches who are candidates talk to their friends. Mann and Washington likely are talking to people - either people now on the Oakland staff, Kampe himself, or people who know Kampe and others on the Oakland staff. So, the info gets back to Kampe or others. Then, the people at Oakland relay that information to Tony Paul. Remember that Paul has pushed Washington and Mann as confirmed interviews. Paul then throws in the disses by Isaiah Jones and you have a story. Who has TP been talking to for the past 4 days - Oakland. So, you're getting OU propaganda packaged as a TP opinion column. This is all being done to hurt us - at least not to help us - by discouraging other potential candidates who could present a threat to Oakland. Also, if we hire someone from "Kampe's tree", then he has his last laugh at us for not hiring him way back when. However, when OU's mouthpiece in the News wants us to focus on Washington and Mann, it makes me wonder who else is rumored to be part of those 6 or 7 semifinalists that has them worried. Thank you PTC, Tony Paul is a lazy writer for Detroit. However I guess having our name mentioned is better than not at all.

What is dishonest in the article?? PTC, you seem to be protest too much on this. We aren’t being wronged in this article as far as I can tell. We are being pretty dang soft if we don’t like being mentioned in same article as Oakland. And if TP didn’t write about us we would have exactly zero inches of column combined from both our local papers on an annual basis. This complaining about this article is soft, weak and insecure. Not exactly the Titan way but alas this is what our program has been reduced to. Actually PTC is spot on, yet some of what Rogobob says is also on point. TP has a responsibility though to write a story based upon actual sourced information rather than blowing smoke.

Not something new and indistinguishable. How can a one of a kind name like University of Detroit Mercy be indistinguishable? It’s unique isn’t it? Recent? 1990? Odd way to put it. Also Willie Green did not hoop for us prior to the merger did he? But I’d be fine with your suggestion, just so I can turn my hearing aid back on! I might note for the benefit of others that I heard a few people graduated from Mercy, so let’s not forget them ok, or do we just disappear them? Is there at time limit on the Mercy legacy? Did their clock run out? Or don’t we remember women? I’d proud as anyone to have Dave and Spencer as alums but wow…I think the mission and history is more than just a handful of accomplished athletes. Query: What if there was Mercy alum or UDM alum who would give us a million but insisted the name not be changed, or 10MM or 100 MM if we changed to Mercy? Then what? Dashing out to get my Mega and Powerball tix so I can test that hypothetical!

You assume a lot and know nothing of me, how much I've donated, how much my family has, etc. You assume I know nothing of special needs, again comical. Also assume my age and my financials. Also comical. Do better. The fact that my comment hit a nerve is the point. You are out of touch. The name Mercy is weak. Particularly in sports. Recruits don't like it. People think we are a hospital. I think with a complete brand reboot, (we've tried the UDM thing for 30 years and I've seen very little improvement) better things could happen, or we could hope that one (another) coaching change is the answer (eye roll). Even if we made it to the sweet 16 with under the Mercy brand, Im still not going to support the brand.
