Starting to think about 2022-23 & the number of available scholarships. Am I correct in assuming that Buay Koka (with a waiver), D.J. Harvey, Antoine Davis, Kevin McAdoo, Willie Isiani, and Prince Oduro are all eligible to return, if they wish, but not count vs the 13 scholarship limit since they would all be taking advantage of their extra year? If so, we then have 6 players also eligible to return that will count vs the 13 man limit (Jordan Phillips, Jeramy Shaw, Madut Akec, Noah Waterman, Jamail Pink and Kyle LeGreair). That leaves us with 7 open scholarships. Assuming he signs, Sonny Johnson will take one of those scholarships leaving us with 6 open? Is this correct? I realize that in this day and age having zero transfers is unlikely, but I'm just trying to get a starting point for when I think about recruiting this season/off season Doing some quick Googling I found a football related article that said “The waiver that lifts scholarship limits (at least for the moment), does not extend beyond the 2021-2022 school year.” Perhaps things could change, but my take is that come next year schools will most likely again be limited to a maximum of 13 scholarships for basketball. Would definitely complicate the recruiting situation given there are a significant number of Titan MBB players with an option to return for the extra year. Wouldn’t be surprised if Sonny Johnson is the only early signee for Detroit Mercy in November. I assume that many other D-1 programs are similarly situated, and the number of early LOI commitments in the Fall will be down significantly from past years (as schools take a wait and see approach until it is clear how many athletes come back for the option year).

Thanks. After doing some research, I too found that the extra scholarship allotment is for 21-22 only. So if everyone chose to return, along with the Sonny Johnson commitment, we could be at the full 13 right now. However, I'd be surprised if more than 1 or 2 of the 6 that could use their extra season next season, actually did.

The Titans have 4 players who have two years of eligibility left (thanks to last year's "free" season) but who will be in their 5th year of college this year: Harvey, McAdoo, Oduro, and Koka. All 4 are strong candidates to move on after this season. Meanwhile, Davis, Isiani, Phillips, and Akec will complete their 4th year of college this year, and may have completed their undergraduate degrees by the end of this academic year. I suspect we'll see the latter three back for the '22-'23 season, but no guarantees. With AD, it probably depends on how his pro prospects look, whether he and Pop think a 5th year would improve them. Waterman is in his third year of college this season but, rather amazingly, still has freshman eligibility. I really hope we keep him for at least two more years but if he has a big season he's certainly a possibility to transfer, or maybe even go pro (I suspect he needs at least 2 more years before he's ready for a pro career, but I surely could be wrong).
Realistically, not including players who just leave due to lack of playing time, we could be looking at up to 9 scholarships opening up. Probably fewer, but, we'll see. It has to be frustrating for the coaching staff to plan.

It has to be frustrating for the coaching staff to plan. I’m starting to think about next year already. It will be interesting to see who comes back among the seniors/grad students. I was 99% certain that Antoine Davis would be moving on, now I’m not so sure. I think McAdoo will return. Hope Harvey does, he could be star of the team next year. Hope Isiani wants to stay. I’m going to guess Koka stays. Would be nice to see Phillips in action next year, doesn’t seem to be in the cards for this season. Akec is listed as a junior but may have close to enough credits to graduate. Johnson has run out of eligibility I believe. My guess is all/most of the above players have signaled their intentions to the coaching staff, and in return have received feedback about their potential role on the team next year. The 2/26/22 senior day festivities could provide an early indication of who will staying and who might be moving on. Of course, some of the underclassmen could opt to transfer out, creating additional roster openings. Lots of moving parts.

Commish, you should take Oduro off the 22-23 list.
I believe Johnson is the only player on the team who is completely and totally out of eligibility.
I'll be surprised if Koka comes back. I think he's playing to get his advanced degree and when he gets it (this year, I think) he goes home and uses it.
I hope Sylla gets in shape and learns the system and plays to his 6-foot-11 potential. He's a very large guy, and as I've said before we need an inside presence to succeed in the HL -- not a star, but at least a presence.

You might be right about Koka moving on, he has three semesters at UDM (plus the summer session possibly), enough time to get a master’s degree under his belt. He played five minutes against Oakland, Sylla played six. I think Sylla has more upside potential. He had a couple decent offensive moves against OU.

At this time of year, it's always fun to speculate on the roster for next season! With the extra year of eligibility, it's certainly possible we'll see some of this year's Senor/Grad students return for the 2022-23 season. However, if that doesn't occur and all the non Senior/Grad students return, we have a good start at putting together a solid roster; Shaw, Phillips, Akec, Sylla, Ottris Jr., LeGreier, Waterman, and Johnson Jr. (HS 2022).

A Tweet sent out from Detroit Titans MBB today indicates that Saturday is Senior Day for Antoine Davis, Willy Isiani, and Matt Johnson. Perhaps an early indication of who might be leaving versus remaining on the roster for next season.

They could work towards their Masters and get a little stronger. With the unrest in Willies home part of the world Georgia might be a good place to stay away from. Georgia could be next! Matt I think is playing his best since arriving. The game time experience probably hasn’t been that great for them. If they stay I think we finally have the right pieces.

Matt exhausts his eligibility this season, so he doesn’t have an option to return. Coach Davis told a friend of mine recently that AD would likely return next season. Perhaps even with a Senior Day celebration, the door might remain open for a fifth season. Willy might want to transfer somewhere else. As a grad transfer, I don’t think he would have to sit out a year.

The only player we have out of eligibility is Johnson. It's not like we're juggling the lineup to get starts for Willy and Antoine, who would otherwise be sitting down at the end of the bench, or keeping them in the lineup while other graduating seniors are on the bench. And of course, they might not be back--so its reasonable to call it senior day for them. But beyond the fact that they haven't absolutely committed to return--and maybe not even that--I don't think you can read anything into the fact that discussed as part of Senior Day.

This is the freshman class of four years ago (I think):
Antoine Davis, 6-1 G Marquis Moore, 6-6 G/F Willie Isiani, 6-8 F Chris Brandon, 6-7 F Boe Nguidjol, 6-8 F
Three are gone (Moore, Brandon and Boe), so AD and Willy are the "graduates" of that class. Add in Matt as he is the only player who CANNOT return. So there is some logic for the three being highlighted.

BTW, after spending last season playing sparsely at Prairie View, Boe transferred to D-2 Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. He's second on the team in minutes played, averaging 13.3 points and a team best 6.8 rebounds. It has to be really tough to give up dreams of a D-1 "career," but I"ll bet he's happier and having more fun.
