What to Watch on February 14.

7:00 PM Virginia vs Virginia Tech. ESPN. Two high major teams with work to do to get into the field of 64.
7:00 PM West Virginia vs Kansas State. ESPN2. Two high major teams with work to do to get into the field of 64.

IUPUI up on UIC at the half. I wonder if it's too late for the MVC to change their mind.

Horizon Purdue-Fort Wayne 102, Cleveland State 98. I didn't see all of this game, but what I did see was great. This was just an amazing, wild game. I won't describe it--watch it on ESPN replay. At least watch PFW go the length of the court in 3 seconds to tie it on a three at the regulation buzzer. And watch CSU's DeShon Parker drill a three from the corner to tie it with under 3 seconds left in the second OT--only his 13th attempt of the year. Or watch Chris Greene--a guy who plays in about two-thirds of the games and averages under 6 minutes when he does play--come off the bench and tie it in triple overtime with a three with a minute left, and then hit another three with two seconds left to give CSU one final chance. CSU lost this one but they remind me of Perry Watson's old teams. They never quit, they never stop fighting, and they don't care who takes the last shot. (Watson once said something along the lines of "we practice hard and expect every player to be able to step up and make the play in the clutch). Anyway, CSU's lead over Oakland drops to a game. Meanwhile, PFW's 5th in a row and 11th win in 14 games puts them two games up on the Titans for the last playoff bye.
UIC 57, IUPUI 54. The poor Jags (2-22, 0-13) came so close. They led for most of the game, but were overtaken in the final minutes by UIC (10-14, 6-9).
Big Games Around the Country: #6 Kansas 76, Oklahoma State 62.
Virginia Tech 63, Virginia 52. Both teams are 16-10 and will need a big late-season run to reach the tournament. Kansas State 78, West Virginia 73. Both teams are 14-11 and will need an even bigger late-season run to reach the tournament. Oregon 62, Washington State 59.
St. Bonaventure 83, St. Louis 79. Davidson 72, Duquesne 61. Foster Loyer had 24 points for Davidson (21-4), which is a game up on Dayton for first place in the A10. Dayton 63, Rhode Island 57.
Harford 75, Vermont 74 (OT). 7-16 Hartford, which is about to go back to D-2, upset 20-5 Vermont in the America East Conference. Mississippi Valley State 85, Alabama State 71. A rare win for Lindsay Hunter's team (2-21).
Mid-Major Win of the Day: Southern 70, Texas Southern 58. Well, clearly the best game was PFW-CSU, but for impact on a conference race, we'll go with this game. Southern (15-10) takes a game lead over Texas Southern in the battle for first in the SWAC.

6:00 PM Antonio Gates vs Steve Mix. CBSSN. Solid MAC game as Kent State (15-9, 10-4) travel to the Glass City to take on Toledo (20-5, 12-2).
6:30 PM #19 Michigan State vs Penn State. BTN. The Spartans are looking for consistency.
7:00 PM Mugsy Bogues vs #9 Tommy Amaker. ESPN. Wake Forest already has 20 wins and trails Duke by 1.5 games in the ACC.
7:00 PM #20 TJ Ford vs Mookie Blaylock. ESPN2. Texas and Oklahoma usually put on a good show. They don't like each other.
8:00 PM #10 Howard Porter vs #8 Marvin Barnes (Two former Pistons). CBSSN. Game of the Night as 'Nova visits Providence in a top ten battle.
9:00 PM #4 Jack "Goose" Givens vs #18 Ernie Grunfeld. ESPN. Big battle in the SEC as Kentucky visit Tennessee.
9:00 PM #15 Wisconsin vs Indiana. ESPN2. Wisconsin wants to bounce back from a loss to Rutgers. IU needs to break that three game losing streak.
9:00 PM Barry Stevens (Flint native) vs Kurt Thomas. ESPNU. Iowa State got off to an incredible start, flirting with a top ten ranking. Then they hit a rough spell that they are still in, sitting at 3-9 in conference. TCU was not expected to be good this year, but are currently 16-6, 5-5.

Tuesday, February 15
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: Eastern Michigan 75, Central Michigan 70. Eastern is 9-16; Central is 6-17.
Western Michigan 61, Akron 57 (OT). WMU (6-20) made it two in a row with a surprising overtime win over Akron (16-8). Lamar Norman led the Broncos with 19 points.
Kent State 72, Toledo 59. Kent State (16-9) won its 7th in a row, upsetting Toledo (20-6) at Savage Hall. The loss knocked the Rockets out of first place in the MAC, while Kent moves into the picture, a game back of the Toledo and two behind Ohio U.
New Mexico 75, #22 Wyoming 66 After getting ranked for the first time since 2015, with its highest ranking since 1988, Wyoming (21-4) loses its next game.
Hofstra 97, Elon 64. Omar Silverio had 40 for Hofstra (18-9). Silverio's previous career high was 28 against the Titans earlier this year. In 4 years, he only has one other game with more than 17 points.
A few vitally important games from around the country Penn State 62, #19 Michigan State 58. Starting with 4 minutes left in the game, the Nittany Lions (10-12) held MSU (18-7) scoreless for over three and a half minutes, long enough to come away with the win. State has lost 3 of 4 and 6 of 10.
#16 Tennessee 76, #4 Kentucky 63. Tennessee (19-6) dominated. #10 Villanova 89, #8 Providence 84. Villanova (20-6) led for all but a few seconds in the first half, but didn't put the Friars (21-3) away until the final seconds.
#9 Duke 76, Wake Forest 74. Wake (20-7) rallied from 9 down to tie by holding Duke scoreless for 3:57, but that was one second short of what they needed. Duke's Mark Williams broke the scoreless spell with a dunk for the win with 1 tick left on the clock.
#15 Wisconsin 74, Indiana 69. #18 Ohio State 70, Minnesota 45. #20 Texas 80, Oklahoma 78 (OT). Oklahoma (14-12) has lost 9 of 11. #23 Arkansas 76, Missouri 57.
Butler 73, DePaul 71. Butler (13-13) rallied late to nip the Demons (12-12).
Iowa State 54, TCU 51. TCU (16-7) has lost 3 of 4, and now faces ranked teams in 5 of its next 6 games. Memphis 81, Cincinnati 74. Texas A&M 56, Florida 55. A&M (16-10) broke an 8 game losing streak, while dealing 16-10 Florida's at-large hopes a major blow.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: San Diego State 75, Utah State 56. The Aztecs (16-6) needed this to stay in the at-large discussion.

7:00 PM Mississippi State vs #25 Alabama. ESPN2. If former Titan assistant/current Mississippi State assistant Ernie Z and the Bulldogs want to make the big tournament, a win here goes a long way.
7:00 PM John Bagley vs David Rivers. ESPNU. Notre Dame looking for payback after Boston College won the earlier match up.
8:00 PM Eric "Sleepy" Floyd vs Glenn "Doc" Rivers. FS2. Marquette has lost a couple in a row and welcome in a struggling Georgetown squad.

Wednesday, February 16
Titan Non-Conference Opponents #25 Alabama 80, Mississippi State 75. Speaking of Rocket Watts, he was a DNP tonight, and the other MSU (14-11) lost for the 6th time in 7 games.
Miami 70, Louisville 63. Louisville (11-14) lost its 7th straight, and barring a miracle finish is going to have its first losing season since 2001.
Other Games of Note Hope 93, Calvin 81. College basketball's greatest rivalry. As is common, the two entered the game tied atop the oldest athletic conference in the nation, the MIAA. The Dutchmen ended Calvin's 9-game winning streak in a game that featured 15 ties and 19 lead changes.
#1 Gonzaga 86, Pepperdine 66. #2 Auburn 94, Vanderbilt 80. #5 Purdue 70, Northwestern 64.
#11 Texas Tech 83, #7 Baylor 73. Rutgers 70, #12 Illinois 59. Big win for Rutgers (16-9). #24 Connecticut 70, Seton Hall 65.
Notre Dame 99, Boston College 95 (OT). BC (9-15) almost derailed the Irish express. Pitt 76, North Carolina 67. Down in Chapel Hill, Pitt (10-16) led this one by 21 points with under 10 to play, then held off a rally that brought the Tarheels (18-7) to within 6 in the final minutes.
Loyola 71, Valparaiso 69. Two old friends; Act like they don't remember us. St. John's 86, Xavier 73. Marquette 77, Georgetown 66. St. Louis 90, La Salle 64. Temple 64, SMU 57.
George Washington 73, Duquesne 52. Duquesne was clobbered tonight by 10-14 GW. Duquesne's last NCAA bid was 1977, the team that broke the Titans' 21-game winning streak. The Dukes were last nationally ranked in 1972. They had just two 20-win seasons--in 1980, and 2009--between 1972 and hiring Keith Dambrot in 2017. I kinda figured if anyone could get Duquesne back to even a facsimile of its former glory, Dambrot would be the guy. The administration gave Dambrot a lot of money to buy low major opponents for the non-conference season--in the fall of 2017 they played their 1st 11 games in Pittsburgh, 10 at home and one at the neutral Consol Center against Pitt; in 2018 they had 9 non-conference home games and two (Pitt and Penn State) at Consol. After the 2018-19 season, the did a major renovation of their 1988 arena, the Palumbo Center, which reopened just over a year ago. (It's now renamed in honor of former Duquesne star--and later Fort Wayne Piston--CM Cooper, the first African-American ever selected in an NBA draft). They were the first school to hire staff specifically to help athletes take advantage of the new NIL rules. In Dambrot's 1st three seasons, Duquesne went 16-16, 19-13, and 21-9 (it's best record since 1972). But last year the Dukes were just 9-9, and this year they've slumped to 6-17. Just a blip in the rebuild? Or is Duquesne now beyond even the abilities of Dambrot and the school's substantial financial commitment?
Mid-Major Win of the Day: Winthrop 81, Gardner-Webb 70. Cory Hightower led Winthrop (18-8) with 16 points. The win left the Eagles two games ahead of second-place Gardner Webb (15-10) in the Big South Southern Division.

What to watch on February 17.
4:00 PM Tubby Smith vs Jerry Dunn. BTN. Minnesota travels to Penn State, as two first year coaches square off. If you're not familiar with Jerry Dunn, he took Penn State to the NCAA tournament twice, including a Sweet Sixteen trip in 2001.
7:00 PM Cliff Levingston vs Kenyon Martin. ESPN2. Wichita State and Cincinnati are both desperate for wins.
7:00 PM Glenn Rice vs Roy Marble (Couple of Flint guys) ESPN. Michigan needs this one but Iowa is a five point favorite.
9:00 UCF vs Houston. ESPN2. The wounded Cougars are hoping to stop the bleeding of a two game losing streak.
9:00 PM Jason Calliste vs Shaq McKissic (Two names that sting Titan fans for different reasons). ESPN. Oregon is the mix of teams fighting for second place in the PAC 12. Arizona State is in the role of spoiler.
11:00 PM Washington State at #13 UCLA. FS1. Should be a competitive game for the East Coast insomniacs.

Horizon: Youngstown State 88, UIC 79. YSU (17-11, 11-7) overhauled UIC (10-15, 6-10) late in the second half. Dwayne Cohill had 32 points, including 13 at the foul line.
IUPUI 66, Robert Morris 56. IUPUI's 6-man team finally broke through against D-1 competition, and on the road, no less. The Jags are now 3-22 overall, 1-13 in conference. BJ Maxwell led with 18 points. Robert Morris fall to 7-20, 5-13.
Other Games Michigan 84, Iowa 79. The Hawkeyes (17-8) held Michigan (14-10) without a field goal for the final 4 minutes, but their rally ran out of time. Michigan may yet make the NCAA tournament. Buffalo 83, Eastern Michigan 69. After a surprising 7-7 start, EMU is just 2-9.
#3 Arizona 83, Oregon State 69. #13 UCLA 76, Washington State 56. #14 Houston 70, Central Florida 52.
#17 USC 79, Washington 69. #21 Murray State 91, Austin Peay 56.
Creighton 71, DePaul 59. Cincinnati 85, Wichita State 76.
Bryant 75, Central Connecticut 61. The nation's scoring leader, Bryant's Peter Kiss, had 23 points at halftime and finished with 36. It was Kiss's 4th straight game with 30 or more, and 8th in a row with 25 or more points.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: St. Mary's 69, San Francisco 64.

9:00 PM Maryland vs Nebraska. BTN. Teams are a combined 4-24 in league play, but the game should be competitive.

Horizon
Detroit 60, Northern Kentucky 52. Although in the game thread there was much chatter about the ugliness of this game, I thought this was a very good game for the Titans. True, the shooting was awful, at least until the second half (the Titans' actually shot 50% in the second half). But we got good looks against a tough NKU defense--if Willy and Harvey have their usual shooting nights, nobody thinks this game was ugly; we didn't turn it over; we got modest yet really important and well-timed contributions from LeGreair and Sylla; Waterman looks to finally be back. But for Hubertas Pivorius going crazy, we would have knocked off a red-hot NKU team by 15 points. Nice job, extending our home winning streak to 13 and keeping us with at least a small chance of snagging that #4 tournament seed.
Wright State 78, Oakland 74 Meanwhile, on the shiny top at the McRena, Wright State (16-12, 13-6) rallied from 12 down late in the second half to snatch a win from Oakland (18-9, 11-5). Grant Basile got a huge put-back to give WSU the lead with 8 seconds to play, and Trey Calvin made a super steal to seal the win with 2 seconds left on the clock. Meanwhile, the HL is looking at an anomaly--as it stands, WSU is a half-game ahead of Oakland in the conference standings, but behind OU in conference winning percentage. I believe the latter controls for seeding.
Cleveland State 78, Milwaukee 61. Coupled with OU's loss, CSU (18-7, 14-4) is two up on the Grizzlies with 3 to play. Oakland now needs help if they're going to win the regular season.
Fort Wayne 74, Green Bay 55. PFW (17-10, 12-6) won its sixth in a row to move into 4th place in the standings--the final first round bye and second round home game. The Mastodons face reeling Milwaukee on Sunday, before closing at Oakland and Detroit.
Titan Non-Con Opponents Kent State 75, Ohio U. 52. The Golden Flash (17-9) are playing the best ball in the MAC right now. They've won 8 straight, in their last two games knocking off league leaders Toledo (by 17, on the road) and now Ohio, by 23. Tonight they led by 30 points at the half against first place Ohio (22-5), which still leads Toledo by a half-game and Kent State by a full game.
Mississippi State 68, Missouri 49. The Bulldogs (14-11) will be a tough out in the NIT.
Other Sporting Events Not Using Forced Uyghur labor: St. John's 91, Butler 57. Maryland 90, Nebraska 74. VCU 77, Richmond 57.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: Yale 81, Penn 72. The Eli (15-9, 9-1) opened a game and a half lead over Penn (11-13, 8-3) in the Ivy. Jalen Gabbidon scored 32 points to lead Yale to its seventh consecutive win.
