What to Watch for March 9. The high majors start up their championship weeks.
2:30 PM Dana Barros vs Mugsy Bogues. ESPN. Boston College got a blowout win over Pitt yesterday, improving to 12-19 after going 4-16 last season. Wake Forest is probably set for the NCAA tourney bid, but has thoughts of stealing the conference title in a down year in the AAC.
4:30 PM Butler vs Xavier. FS1. Butler playing for pride. The Musketeers need some wins!
6:00 PM Nebraska vs Northwestern BTN. Couple of Big Ten bottom division teams square up.
7:00 PM West Virginia vs Kansas State ESPNU. Both teams realistically looking at the NIT.
7:00 PM Rod Strickland vs Mark Jackson FS1. DePaul wants to finish over .500 on the year and maybe get an NIT bid. St. John's is 16-14 and hoping for a surprise conference tourney run.
9:30 PM Pervis Ellison vs Ralph Sampson. ESPN. Louisville and Virginia have been part of the reason that the ACC has been so down this year.

Wednesday, March 9
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Virginia 51, Louisville 50. Louisville's disappointing season ends at 13-19. The Cardinal tried, leading for all of the first half and never trailing by more than four. A pair of Jayden Gardner free throws with 4 seconds left put UVa (19-12) up 4 and sealed the win. Virginia's disaapointing season continues, and if they beat UNC on Thursday, they might still finagle an NCAA bid.
Other Games That Have You Glued to FLO Sports and Such
Oregon 86, Oregon State 72. Stanford 71, Arizona State 70. Washington State 66, California 59. Washington 82, Utah 70.
Northwestern 71, Nebraska 69. Penn State 60, Minnesota 51.
West Virginia 73, Kansas State 67. The Wildcats (14-17) end on a six-game losing streak. WVU (16-16) squares its record at .500.
Boston College 82, Wake Forest 77 (OT). Wake (23-9) has lost 4 of its last 7. Lunardi had them projected as the 29th of 36 at-large teams before this loss, which is a very bad loss. As Sam notes elsewhere, the Deacons are looking at a long, nervous weekend.
Virginia Tech 76, Clemson 75 (OT). Tech (20-12)--in Lunardi's "1st 4 out"--survives to play Notre Dame tomorrow. Syracuse 96, Florida State 57. Florida State's chances for an at-large bid were probably long gone, but wow. A 39-point loss? Syracuse (16-16) still has to beat Duke tomorrow to avoid its first losing season since 1969. That, or accept a CBI invite.
St. John's 92, DePaul 73. Seton Hall 57, Georgetown 53. Georgetown finishes 6-25, its worst mark since 1972, the year before John Thompson arrived. Butler 89, Xaiver 82 (OT). Xavier (18-13) is another team that may well have played themselves out of an NCAA bid. Heading into the evening, Lunardi had them in his "last 4 in." Xavier has lost 6 of 7 and 8 of 10. Butler (14-18) snapped a 5-game losing streak.
Vanderbilt 86, Georgia 51. Missouri 72, Mississippi 60.
Rhode Island 79. Duquesne 77. Nevada 79, New Mexico 72. Utah State 83, Air Force 56.
Rider 71, Iona 70. Our first really stunning upset of the post-season sees Rider take down Iona in the MAAC. Rider (14-18) held the Gaels scoreless for the final three minutes, scoring 6 straight to pull off the upset.
Colgate 74, Navy 58. Top seeded Colgate (23-11) won the Patriot. The Raiders will be in their 3rd consecutive NCAA tournament.

Thursday, March 10
Titan Non-Conference Foes Toledo 72, Central Michigan 71. Central (7-23) came oh so close to knocking off regular season champ Toledo (26-6) in the MAC quarters, but the Rockets took the lead on a RayJ Dennis layup with 10 seconds left, and Central's Harrison Henderson missed on CMU's last attempt.
Kent State 85, Miami 75. Kent (22-9) hits the MAC semis on a 13 game winning streak.
Wyoming 59, UNLV 56. Boise State is next for the Cowboys (25-7).
Mississippi State 73, South Carolina 51. Tolu Smith had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the other MSU (18-14).
Meaningful Games Indiana 74, Michigan 69. Michigan (17-14) blew a 17-point second half lead, putting the Wolverines' at-large hopes in jeopardy while greatly improving Indiana's. Michigan State 76, Maryland 72. #24 Iowa 112, Northwestern 76. A bit lopsided. Penn State 71, Ohio State 68. Penn State (14-16) rallied late to upset the Buckeyes (19-11).
#2 Arizona 84, Stanford 80. Stanford (16-16) put up quite a fight, but finally went down. #13 UCLA 75, Washington State 65. #21 USC 65, Washington 61. Colorado 80, Oregon 69. The Buffs (21-10) finally finish off Oregon (19-14) as an at-large contender.
Oklahoma 72, #3 Baylor 67. A Huge win for Sooners (18-14), putting them back in the at-large picture, and possibly costing Baylor a #1 seed. #6 Kansas 87, West Virginia 63. #14 Texas Tech 72, Iowa State 41. TCU 65, #22 Texas 60. The Toads came back from an 18-point halftime deficit. This should make TCU (20-11) a lock for the Big Dance.
#7 Duke 88, Syracuse 79. Syracuse (16-17) finishes with its first losing record since 1969. #25 North Carolina 63, Virginia 43. Take UVa out of the at-large discussion. Virginia Tech 87, Notre Dame 80. Virginia Tech (21-12) is probably still out, Notre Dame (22-10) probably still in, but I wouldn't bet much on either projection. Miami 71, BC 69 (OT). BC's little run ends.
#8 Villanova 66, St. John's 65. Villanova (24-7) won it on free throws with 3 seconds left. #11 Providence 65, Butler 61. Lavall Jordan has had 3 losing records in the last 4 years at Butler (14-19). #20 Connecticut 62, Seton Hall 52. Creighton 74, Marquette 63.
#23 Colorado State 53, Utah State 51. Colorado State (25-4) won it on a layup with 3 seconds to play. Boise State 71, Nevada 69. San Diego State 53, Fresno State 46. The Mountain West is hoping for 4 bids, and all of their big 4--Colorado State, Boise State, San Diego State, and Wyoming--won in the conference quarters.
Vanderbilt 82, Alabama 76. Vanderbilt (17-15) needs more than this to make the field, but it's a start. Alabama (19-13) will enter the NCAA tournament on a 3-game losing streak. LSU 76, Missouri 68. Texas A&M 83, Florida 80. A&M (21-11) has won 5 in a row in a late bid for a bid. A win over Auburn on Friday would help a whole bunch. Florida (19-13) is probably out.
St. Louis 71, La Salle 51. Richmond 59, Rhode Island 55.
Tulsa 73, Wichita State 67. North Texas 68, Rice 50. Monmouth 61, Niagara 58. Abilene Christian 76, Stephen F. Austin 62.
Grand Canyon 71, Sam Houston 66. GCU (23-7) won a quarterfinal between a couple of pretty good WAC teams.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: Louisiana Tech 59, Western Kentucky 57. Tech (23-9) won a CUSA quarter on Kenny Lofton's late layup.

No let down for North Carolina last night after their big win over Duke on Saturday: UNC 63, Virginia 43.
Alabama is one of those teams that can beat anyone (they beat Gonzaga and Houston this year) or lose to anyone. Their offense of "shoot only threes and layups" isn't really conducive to consistency. Last night in their loss to Vandy over half of their FG attempts were threes, and they only hit 8-34.
Grand Canyon is doing better than I thought they would under Drew.
Bad year for basketball in the DMV. Georgetown, Maryland, and Virginia all are out of the NCAA tournament.

What to Watch on March 11.
11:30 AM Keith Smart vs #15 Kendall Gill. BTN. Indiana might have put themselves in the NCAA tournament with their win over Michigan, but would love to get a win over Illinois to be sure. The Illini feel like they can win the Big Ten tourney.
Noon Texas A&M vs #4 Auburn. ESPN. Despite a flashy record, the Aggies have some work to do to ensure an NCAA berth.
1:00 PM Oscar Robertson vs #18 Elvin Hayes. ESPN2. Cincinnati has slipped since Mick Cronin headed West, but they have a shot against a wounded Houston team.
2:00 PM Dale Brown vs #15 Nolan Richardson ESPN. LSU vs Arkansas. Should be a heated battle.
5:00 PM Akron vs Toledo CBS Sports Network. The Rockets dodged a bullet against CMU in their previous game. Tough one today as they try to gain that elusive NCAA bid.
6:00 PM UMass vs Dayton USA Network. The Flyers need to win the A10 tournament to get into the Dance.
6:30 PM Michigan State vs #17 Wisconsin. BTN. Two teams trying to improve their seeding.
7:00 PM TCU vs #6 Kansas. ESPN2. TCU probably solidified their spot in the Dance with that win over Texas yesterday. Kansas has dreams of a number one seed.
7:00 PM Miami vs #7 Duke. ESPN.
9:00 PM #20 UConn vs #8 Villanova. FS1.
9:30 PM Oklahoma vs #14 Texas Tech. ESPN2. The Sooners have dreams of making the Dance in Porter Moser's first year. Tech is definitely making it in Mark Adams first year.
9:30 PM Dell Curry vs #25 Kenny Smith. ESPN. North Carolina eases back into the rankings. Virginia Tech is on the wrong side of the bubble right now.
11:30 PM #21 USC vs #13 UCLA. FS1. Game of the Night.
11:59 PM San Diego State vs #23 Colorado State. CBSSN. Compelling Mountain West match up for the insomniacs.

Friday, March 11 The field continues to take shape.
Titan Opponents Akron 70, Toledo 62. Once again, it's wait til next year for 26-7 Toledo. The regular season MAC champ closed a 15 point early deficit, but never led. Akron plays for a bid tomorrow--despite six 20-win seasons since then, the Zips haven't made the dance since 2013.
Kent State 67, Ohio 61. By mid-February Ohio U was 22-4 and had lost only to Toledo, at LSU, and at Kentucky, and had double-digit non-conference wins over Belmont and at Cleveland State. But the Bobcats (24-9) lost 4 of their last 5 in the regular season and today were eliminated in the MAC tournament. In late January Kent State was 9-9, but they've since won 14 straight and play Akron for a bid on Saturday.
#9 Tennessee 72, Mississippi State 59. Mississippi State is 18-15, and will probably get an NIT bid.
Boise State 68, Wyoming 61. Wyoming (25-7) cut a 17 point deficit to 3 in the final minute. Gonna be pins and needles for the Cowboys until Sunday evening.
Other Games Michigan State 69, #12 Wisconsin 63. A battle for pride, and seeding.
#9 Purdue 69, Penn State 61. Indiana 65, #16 Illinois 63. Trayce Jackson scored the game's final 3 points on free throws, and IU (20-12) won a game it probably had to win to reach the Big Dance. But now that they've done that, they're looking pretty good, though not exactly champagne-poppin' good.
#24 Iowa 84, Rutgers 74. Iowa (24-9) leaves Rutgers (18-13) slipping around on the bubble. Bubble teams are happy, because a win would likely have clinched a spot.
#2 Arizona 82, Colorado 72. #13 UCLA 69, #21 USC 59.
Texas A&M 67, #4 Auburn 62. The Aggies (22-11) are charging hard toward the finish line, but do they have time? Their 6th consecutive win, this one over a top 5 team, surely has them in the conversation. Yet they might still need another victory to get an at-large bid. Today they got in front early, led by 16 at the half, and by 19 in the second half. Auburn (27-5) cut the lead to 4 in the final minutes, but no closer.
#5 Kentucky 77, Vanderbilt 71. Vandy (17-16) was stubborn. #15 Arkansas 79, LSU 67.
#6 Kansas 75, TCU 62. Kansas (27-6) and TCU (20-12) have their own little March Madness going--this is the third time they've met this month. Kansas takes two out of three. #14 Texas Tech 56, Oklahoma 55. Texas Tech (25-8) did bubble teams--other than OU--a favor, but maybe not a big enough one. The Sooners (18-15) came back from 14 down, but couldn't pull it out.
#7 Duke 80, Miami 76. This narrow loss probably doesn't hurt Miami's at-large hopes, and may even help. Virginia Tech 72, #25 North Carolina 59. Juwan Howard is ready to punch someone after seeing this result. And Xavier? They're figuring out their NIT game plan.
#8 Villanova 63, UConn 60. Creighton 85, #11 Providence 58. Any lingering doubts about a bid for Creighton (22-10) should be removed.
#18 Houston 69, Cincinnati 56. SMU 83, Tulsa 58. An easy win, and a must win, for SMU (23-7). Memphis 85, UCF 69. Tulane 69, Temple 60. Congrats to Ron Hunter and Ray McCallum. Tulane (14-14) advances to the American Conference semis.
San Diego State 63, #23 Colorado State 58.
Davidson 74, Fordham 56. St. Louis 57, St. Bonaventure 56. The Bonnies (20-9) rallied from 10 down midway through the second half to take the lead with about 2 minutes left on an old-fashioned three-point play. The lead switched hands a couple times, and the Billikens got the ball with under a minute to play. St. Louis missed a trey; missed a put back, got the offensive rebound and missed again, and got another offensive rebound. Four's a charm, and the Billikens (23-10) scored to take the lead by a point with 17 seconds to go. The Bonnies miss; the Bonnies get an offensive rebound--foul; and Kyle Lofton missed both free throws--but he gets his own rebound and ... misses the put back at the buzzer. Billikens play on.
Dayton 75, UMass 72. Dayton (23-9) trailed for much of the game, but finally staved off disaster in the A10 quarterfinals. Richmond 75, VCU 64. Relax, bubble teams, VCU (21-9) is on its way to the NIT.
Monmouth 72, Rider 68. With Rider having cleared Iona out of the way, Monmouth (21-12) is the favorite for the MAAC title. But Rider (14-19) didn't go easily, and this one wasn't decided until the final seconds. St. Peter's 64, Quinnipiac 52.
New Mexico State 75, Grand Canyon 70. Abilene Christian 78, Seattle 76. Texas A&M-CC 71, Nicholls 64. Nicholls (21-11) was the top seed in the Southland tournament. Final on Saturday.
Montana State 69, Weber State 67. Weber State (21-12) took Big Sky regular season champ Montana State (26-7) down to the wire in a semifinal game. Rayquan Battle scored 11 of Montana State's 13 points in the final seven minutes, all on free throws.
Long Beach State 67, UC-Santa Barbara 64. Top seed Long Beach advances to the Big West final.
Louisiana Tech 42, North Texas 36. At first I thought this was a half-time score. Tech shot 29% from the floor and 28% from three, enough to overcome the Mean Green's 24% and 17%. Bubble teams have to hate this result almost as much as NTU. North Texas (24-6) is left very much in limbo--it's not a devastating loss that takes them out of tournament consideration, but they didn't have much margin for error. Nor do they get any style points--more than 11 minutes into the game they had just 2 points (although they were able to take a 10-9 lead with 6 minutes left in the 1st half). Louisiana Tech is 24-9.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: UAB 102, Middle Tennessee State 98 (3OT). This is why Championship Week is so great. Two very good teams, but neither likely to get an at-large bid, playing their hearts out. Into overtime as MTSU (23-10) scores with 2 seconds left in regulation to tie, after UAB had taken the lead on a trey with 7 seconds left. Into a second OT. Into a 3rd OT as UAB ties it on free throws with 3 seconds to play. Finally, a 18-5 run by UAB (26-7) in the third overtime broke it open. That'll pit UAB against Louisiana Tech in the CUSA final on Saturday. Jordan Walker scored 40 for UAB.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- CJ Fleming scored a career-high 27 points, Dylan Penn added 22 and Division I newcomer Bellarmine defeated Jacksonville 77-72 in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament final on Tuesday, handing the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament to regular-season champion Jacksonville State. Bellarmine is not eligible for the NCAA tournament as it is in the second of a four-year transition to Division I. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, the Louisville, Kentucky-based school is the first men's team in the past 25 seasons to win its conference tournament while being ineligible for postseason play. Instead, the Knights became heroes in Jacksonville, Alabama. Top-seeded Jacksonville State fell at home 54-51 to the Jacksonville Dolphins on Saturday, but since Bellarmine is ineligible for the NCAA tournament, the Gamecocks will go dancing. “Why Bellarmine isn't eligible for the NCAA Tournament, and why that rule could be changing” | Sports | wdrb.com www.wdrb.com/sports/why-bellarmine-isnt-eligible-for-the-ncaa-tournament-and-why-that-rule-could-be-changing/article_5784bb1a-9fd9-11ec-8d4c-5b2a1da10f66.html

Saturday, March 12 A bunch of bids.
Titan Opponents Akron 75, Kent State 55. Akron (24-9) trounced Kent State (23-10) in both the first half, when Kent was sitting guys for disciplinary reasons, and in the second half, when Kent was at full strength. The defeat snaps Kent's 14 game winning streak, and sends Akron to the Tournament for the first time since 2013.
Elsewhere #9 Purdue 75, Michigan State 70. Purdue (27-6) held off a late Spartan (22-12) rally. Despite the defeat, in the last two games MSU has played some of its best ball of the year.
#24 Iowa 80, Indiana 77. A great game. Iowa (25-9) pulled it out with a late rally after trailing almost the entire game. Jordan Bohannon won it with a buzzer-beating three. Keegan Murray (32 points) outdueled Trayce Jackson Davis (31 points). Now Indiana (20-13) waits nervously...
#2 Arizona 84, #13 UCLA 76. A 15-2 Arizona run early in the second half erased a double-digit Bruin lead, and the Wildcats (31-3) went on to add the Pac 12 tournament title to their regular season championship.
#9 Tennessee 69, #5 Kentucky 62. The Vols (25-7) win the SEC, which might swap them out with Kentucky (26-7) on the 2 and 3 seeding lines, especially if Tennessee closes it out with a win in Sunday's final. Texas A&M 82, #15 Arkansas 64. A&M (23-11), left for dead a couple weeks ago after losing 9 of 10, has now won 7 straight, with the last two over Auburn and now Arkansas. Is that enough if they lose on Sunday in the SEC final?
#6 Kansas 74, #14 Texas Tech 65. Kansas (28-6)pulled away late to win the Big 12.
Virginia Tech 82, #7 Duke 67. We have a bid steal, as Tech (23-12) wins the ACC. Without today's win, it would have been very close for the Gobblers, but I think they would have been out. Hunter Catoor led the upset with 31 points. Duke (28-6) will stay on the #2 line.
#8 Villanova 54, Creighton 48.
#18 Houston 86, Tulane 66. Tulane dreams end. Memphis 70, SMU 63. Things look grim for SMU (23-8), good for the Tigers (21-9).
Davidson 84, St. Louis 69. Foster Loyer led Davidson (27-5) with 21 points. Richmond 68, Dayton 64. Richmond (22-10) will try to steal a bid in Sunday's A10 final.
Boise State 53, San Diego State 52. Boise State (27-7) won the Mountain West tournament in what was basically a replay of last month's 58-57 Boise State win over the Aztecs (23-8). UAB 82, Louisiana Tech 73. The Blazers (27-7) will dance for the first time since 2015. Jordan Walker followed up yesterday's 40 point performance with 27 points today.
New Mexico State 66, Abilene Christian 52. The Aggies (26-6) qualify for 8th time in the last 10 tournaments by winning the WAC. Cal State-Fullerton 72, Long Beach State 71. Fullerton (21-10) won the Big West title. Regular season champ Long Beach (20-12) was unable to get a shot off on its last possession.
St. Peter's 60, Monmouth 54. The Peacocks (19-11) will make their 4th NCAA appearance, and first since 2011. Vermont 82, UMBC 43. Vermont (28-5) left no doubt about who rules the America East Conference. Montana State 87, Northern Colorado 66. Regular season champ Montana State (27-7) wins the Big Sky tournament. Norfolk State 72, Coppin State 57. Regular season champ Norfolk State (24-6) wins the MEAC tournament. Texas Southern 87, Alcorn State 62. Coach Davis's old school swamped the regular season SWAC champ in the conference tournament final.
Texas A&M-CC 73, SE Louisiana 65. Fourth seed Texas A&M-CC (23-11), under first year head coach Steve Lutz, won the Southland Conference tournament for their first NCAA bid since 2007.
Yale 67, Penn 61. Princeton 77, Cornell 73.
