The best nickname predictor of a game outcome today may be the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels at the Winthrop Eagles. Eagles vs Squirrels. Unless they're GEICO squirrels, they don't stand a chance. lol

Already a candidate for MMWOTD in the books, and another near miss just happened. It's college basketball time.

Good to see the Buckeyes kick the season off with a dominant win over a good MAC team.

Action on Tuesday, November 9:
Horizon West Virginia 60, Oakland 53. The Grizzlies led early, fell behind by 17, and rallied in the second half, but couldn't get the key buckets or stops to get closer than 6. Jamal Cain had 15.
Butler 56, IUPUI 47. BJ Maxwell led IUPUI with 14 points and 6 rebounds.
BYU 69, Cleveland State 59. The final margin was BYU's biggest lead of the game. CSU led briefly in the second half, but for most of the game the Vikes shadowed the home team, refusing to quit. This is a really difficult road game, and there's no shame in the Vikings' loss, but a win sure would have been nice for league NET. CSU shot just 37% overall and just 25% from behind the arc, and it's doubly tough to win with those numbers.
Dayton 64, UIC 54. UIC closed the first half with a 19-2 run to take a 7 point halftime lead, but Dayton finally retook the lead with about 8 minutes left and won going away.
Milwaukee 75, North Dakota 60. It took about one half for Patrick Baldwin to adjust to college ball, but with a big second half he finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 6-14 overall and 2-7 from three. One game, one double-double.
Indiana State 81 Green Bay 77. The kind of game that really hurts the league NET ranking. The Phoenix led almost the entire game, at several points by double digits, but faded down the stretch. So it's a home loss to a team that probably won't be that good this year. These are games are league has to win if we're going to regain ground lost in the last decade.
Wright State 86, Lake Erie 53. Tanner Holden had 19, Tim Finke 18, and Grant Basile 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Northern Kentucky 82, Wheeling 54. Lithuanian freshman Hubertus Pivorius scored 17 points in 12 minutes as NKU blew out Wheeling. I'm pretty sure the first Hubertus Pivorius was defeated by a Carthaginian fleet in 252 B.C.
Purdue-Fort Wayne 103, Earlham 54. The Hustling Quakers were no match for the Mastadons. Jalon Pipkins led the way with 19 points.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Missouri 78, Central Michigan 68. Jermaine Jackson, Jr. had 19 points and 5 assists in a losing effort. A JJJ, we hardly knew ye. Toledo 69, Valparaiso 61. JT Shumate led the Rockets with 20.
Louisville 72, Southern 60. Louisville led by just 2 at the half, and Southern kept it close until a 13-2 Louisville run midway through the second half. Samuel Williamson had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Cardinals.
#15 Houston 83, Hofstra 75 (OT). Houston needed overtime to beat Hofstra. The Dutchmen grabbed an early 10 point lead and were up by 6 at the break. They were up by 13 with under 8 minutes to play when the Cougars began their comeback. Houston tied it with 24 seconds left and Hofstra missed the last shot in regulation. That's a tough defeat, but the kind of game you have to close out.
Colgate 65, Northeastern 58. Colgate is one of the top teams in the Patriot this year, so this win in Hamilton is no surprise. Northeastern made just 3 of just 14 three-point attempts.
Other Games of Interest #3 Kansas 87, Michigan State 74. MSU isn't ranked, but it is MSU, and it wasn't that hard. Nice way to start the season, if you're a Jayhawk fan. Indiana 68, Eastern Michigan 62. The Hurons Eagles cut a 21 point deficit to 2 points with 24 seconds left, but couldn't catch the Hoosiers. A valiant effort, to no avail.
#1 Gonzaga 97, Dixie State 63. #2 UCLA , Cal-Bakersfield . The Bruins were rolling to an easy win when the Commissioner's bedtime rolled around. #4 Villanova 91, Mt. St. Mary's 51. 27 points for Justin Moore. #5 Texas 92, Houston Baptist 48. #7 Purdue 96, Bellarmine 67.
#9 Duke 79, #10 Kentucky 71. Duke takes the night's headline matchup. The Devils led for all but a few seconds, but couldn't put the Wildcats away until very late. Trevor Keels paced the winners with 25 points.
#11 Illinois 71, Jackson State 47. #12 Memphis 89, Tennessee Tech 65. #13 Oregon 83, Texas Southern 66. #14 Alabama 93, Louisiana Tech 64. #16 Arkansas 74, Mercer 61. #17 Ohio State 67, Akron 66. A Zed Key layup with 2 seconds left saved the Buckeyes from a big upset. #18 Tennesse 90, UT-Martin 62. #19 North Carolina 83, Loyola (Md.) 67. #21 Maryland 83, Quinnipiac 69. #22 Auburn 77, Morehead State 54. #23 St. Bonaventure 75, Siena 47. #24 Connecticut 97, Central Connecticut 48.
Ohio 92, Belmont 80. A 15-2 run midway through the second half broke a 58-all tie, and Ohio went on to win this game between two mid-majors predicted to make some noise this year. Nice win for the Bobcats, who got 27 points from Mark Sears.
Winthrop 110, Mary Baldwin 78. Indeed, the Squirrels had no chance against the Eagles. Xavier 63, Niagara 60. Sacred Heart 86, La Salle 81. A nice win for Sacred Heart. St. John's 119, Mississippi Valley State 61. Lindsay Hunter's squad picks up right where it left off--losing by a lot and giving up huge points. Chicago State 77, St. Thomas 72. St. Thomas comes up short in its D-1 debut. Nichols 62, Northern Iowa 58. Not a good look for the MVC.
Western Illinois 75, Nebraska 74. A trey by Luka Barisic with 7 seconds left gave the Leathernecks an upset win. The Citadel 78, Pittsburgh 63. Not even close. The SoCon went 8-1 on the night, with only Mercer's loss to #16 Arkansas blurring the evening. Miami (OH) 72, Georgia Tech 69. Another ACC team goes down to a mid-major.
Northern Illinois 70, Washington 64. Novi's Trendon Hankerson had 28 points to lead NIU's upset. UC-San Diego 80, California 67. Colorado 94, Montana 90 (OT). Oregon State 73, Portland State 64. It was almost a catastrophic night for the PAC 12. Colorado needed a late trey and a last possession Montana turnover to force OT against Montana State, and Oregon State rallied in the final minutes of regulation to hold off Portland State. As it is, they had two teams lose to unheralded mid-majors.
New Mexico State 62, UC-Irvine 51. UC-Davis 72, Utah State 69. Nice win for the Big West team. Colorado State 109, Oral Roberts 80. Defending scoring champ Max Abmas was just 1-9 from three and 8-22 overall as the touted Golden Eagles crashed on take-off.
Mid Major Win of the Day: Navy 66, #25 Virginia 58. Navy took the lead with 15:08 to play in the first half, and never trailed after that. Remember that Navy went 15-3 last year. The Midshipmen are good. The ACC lost three to mid-majors tonight.

"Hustling Quakers"? I have a new favorite college team name (that is not "Titans").

Some fun buzzer beaters and action on opening night. Not noted above, Wichita State survived Jacksonville State with a last second 3 that was from the center court logo.
In the Akron/OSU game, Akron had hit a MONSTER and-1 fourpoint play to take the lead late, just to lose on the last second shot in the lane by the Buckeyes to survive.
It's fun and always great to have college hoops back around!

Coming off the bench in NKU’s win on Tuesday, former Titan Chris Brandon had two points (only took one shot) and nine rebounds in 17 minutes of play. Looks like he may be a key reserve and a rebounding specialist for the Norse, much the same role he had at Detroit Mercy.

Wednesday, November 10--finally. And two nights into the season, both the Titans and the Horizon look like same ole, same ole.
Horizon
Wyoming 85, Detroit 47. Madut Akec had 14 points and 13 rebounds, so there's that.
Penn State 75, Youngstown State 59. Michael Akuchie had 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Central Florida 69, Robert Morris 59. RMU fell behind by 19 early, and while a rally early in the second half kept them nominally in the game, they never really threatened UCF. Enoch Cheeks had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Western Michigan 76, Hope 58. Lamar Norman had 23 points in his return to western Michigan. Mississippi State 75, North Alabama 49. Garrison Brooks led the other MSU with 18 points.
Other Games of Interest #6 Michigan 88, Buffalo 76. Hunter Dickinson had 27 points. Jeenathon Williams had 32 for the Bison.
#20 Florida State 105, Penn 70. The regular ole' Quakers couldn't subdue the Seminoles.
DePaul 97, Coppin State 72. Coppin was just a point down at the half. Rutgers 73, Lehigh 70 (OT). Lehigh was another mid-major--we had a couple last night--that couldn't close it out in regulation. Rutgers forced the OT on a late basket and squeaked through the overtime.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: James Madison 135, Carlow 40. Carlow isn't just an NAIA team--it's a bad NAIA team. But there were no real impressive mid-major wins tonight, and beating any opponent by 95 points probably merits some attention. Nor was Madison running it up--13 players scored, no one played more than 23 minutes, eleven players played at least 10 minutes, and everyone on the roster saw at least 5 minutes court time.

Thursday, November 11 A slow night before the weekend.
Horizon Evansville 60, IUPUI 40. The Jags (0-2) have scored just 87 points in their first two games.
Some Scores #21 Maryland 71, George Washington 64. A slow, grind-it-out win for the Terps, who trailed by a point at the half.
Liberty 85, Regent 24. We need to schedule Regent.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: UC-Riverside 66, Arizona State 65. After Luther Mohammed's layup gave the Sun Devils a two point lead with 2 seconds left, Riverside won it on a heave from the wrong side of half court just before the buzzer. Senior JP Moorman was the hero for the Highlanders (1-1).

Liberty 85, Regent 24. We need to schedule Regent. Falwell beats Robertson in the battle of the televangelists.

The PAC 12 has been a regular contributor to the mid major win of the day feature.
Other notable scores from 11/11.
Vermont 71, Norther Iowa 57. NIU is dreaming of a conference title, but they drop to 0-2 after losses to Nicholls and Vermont.
Providence 92, Sacred Heart 64. It was a seven-point lead at the half. The Friars step up against Wisconsin next week.
Washington 73, Northern Arizona 63. This game was the one I thought would be our MMWOTD, but Washington held on. The Huskies lost to Northern Illinois in their opener.
San Francisco 92, Prairie View 76. The Dons started three transfers. Super Senior Jamaree Bouyee, one of my favorite mid major players, was the leading scorer with 24.
