2:00 PM #22 Bob Lanier vs Boise State ESPN2. Chance to see the ranked Bonnies of St. Bonaventure in action. Things I learned today: St. Bonaventure has an enrollment of only around 1800. Prior to this season, the last time the Bonnies were ranked was 1971. The Titans beat that 1971 ranked team.

The Titans also beat a ranked Bonnie team in 1969 with Spencer Haywood battling Bob Lanier. High scorer for U-D that night was soph Jim “Scrappy” Jackson.

I was 8 years old and still remember. The Memorial building was packed to the gills! I learned later that many of the Motown legends were there also! St Bonny’s basketballs were lost or stolen and they used ABA colorful balls to warm up with. As I recall, Haywood outplayed Lanier and Titan’s won going away. We were top ranked the beginning of the year but then had a poor second half of the season.

I had a HS friend who went to SBU, we drove down from Buffalo and watched Detroit beat the Bonnies over Christmas break in 1974 or 1975 at Bonas, Vitale was UD's coach. Detroit should play Canisius, Bonas and Niagara regularly, or at least Canisius, a fellow great Lakes Jesuit school.

The Motor City Sam Basketball Happiness Meter had a good night last night, as the games in which I had a strong rooting interest went my way, except for one.
Xavier over Ohio State (Sorry, Baller, I was pulling for the Big East) Providence over New Hampshire (Big Ed Cooley fan) Marquette over Ole Miss (I'm rooting for Shaka to succeed at Marquette) DePaul over Rutgers (Obviously) Wyoming over Washington (I root against Washington since they fired Lorenzo Romar) San Diego State over Arizona State (For Smokey, plus I've been rooting against Bobby Hurley for 30 years; why stop now?) San Francisco over Nevada (Two way winner: A team I like beating a coach that I don't like)
The only disappointment was EMU losing by one to Northern Kentucky. It was an exciting game, but one that the Eagles kind of let get away.

Thursday, Nov. 18:
Horizon: #24 Florida 81, Milwaukee 45. As I suspected, Milwaukee (1-2) is finding that one blue chipper does not a top-40 team make, and Pat Baldwin, while playing well, needs at least a bit of time to adjust to college ball. The Panthers got smoked. Baldwin had 13 points to lead the team in scoring, but needed 15 shots and turned it over 3 times. Through three games, he's averaged 17.7 points and 8 rebounds, but shot just 39% overall. Really good numbers, but not saviour numbers. The Panthers will be OK come conference time, and Baldwin is still likely to be a 1st team all-conference player, but at least some UWM fans are having to trim expectations.
UNC Greensboro 60, Green Bay 58. The Phoenix (0-3) have now come up just short in home tilts against Indiana State and this neutral court game against UNC-G. Both would have been nice wins for the HL NET rankings, and it's disappointing to league fans that they couldn't pull off the upsets at home. Greensboro is 4-0, with a pair of narrow wins over HL teams (they nipped NKU by a point in Covington last week). Donovan Ivory had a career high 19 for Green Bay,,
Northern Kentucky 74, Eastern Michigan 73. Northern (2-1) kept the Horizon from getting swept--barely. Adrian Nelson had 16 points and 7 rebounds as the Norse overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to win at home. Bryson Langdon hit the winning bssket with 7 seconds left. Eastern (1-2) has looked surprisingly good so far this year.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: Saginaw Valley 80, Western Michigan 63. Not even close. This was SVSU's first ever win over a D-1 team. Delano Smith led the Cardinals (4-1) with 23, while Lamar Norman had 25 for Western (1-2).
Wyoming 77, Washington 72 (OT). Graham Ike had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Hunter Maldonado added 24, as Wyoming won at Washington to advance to 3-0. After stomping both the Titans and Arkansas-Pine Bluff at home by 40 points, a road win against the Pac 12 marks Wyoming as a team to pay some attention to in the Mountain West.
Other Games That Caught My Little Eye #3 Kansas 88, Stoney Brook 59. The Seawolves (0-2) actually led for most of the first 15 minutes. Xavier 71, #19 Ohio State 65. The Big East struck again in the Gavitt Games. Gotta wonder how good the B10 is. #22 St. Bonaventure 67, Boise State 61. For an old-time like me, St. Bonaventure's resurgence reminds me that all is not lost.
DePaul 73, Rutgers 70. The Big East clinched this year's Gavitt, with a 6-2 lead. The Demons (3-0) survive their first real test of the season, and it seems possible they could enter their December 20 game at Louisville with an 8-0 mark.
New Mexico State 75, Davidson 64. See Sam's comments above in this thread. Utah State 87, Penn 79 (OT). The Ivies have some strong non-conference wins already, but Penn couldn't quite pull this one off. Indiana State 77, Old Dominion 36. The margin of victory caught my eye. The Sycamores are 3-1, with a loss at Purdue.
Clemson 75, Temple 48. Marquette 78, Mississippi 72. No letdown for Marquette (4-0) after their win over Illinois. South Carolina 66, UAB 63. Both teams are 3-1. San Diego State 65, Arizona State 63.
San Francisco 73, Nevada 70. The Dons (5-0) become the first team to win 5 games this season. Campbell 67, Marshall 65. A nice win for Campbell (3-1). Marshall (2-1) beat HL favorite Wright State by 8 earlier this year.
Carver College Follies: Citadel 102, Carver 49. I'm thinking we may need to schedule Carver. Tiny Carver has already lost 5 games to D-1 teams by an average of 109-49. The bold Cougars have 8 more games scheduled against D-1 teams this year. Carver's undergraduate enrollment is about 40, with a total enrollment of about 60.
Mid Major Win of the Day: Samford 78, Oregon State 71. Is it too easy to give The Mid-Major Win of the Day over a team that upsets a PAC 12 squad? Yes. Samford never led by much, but they never trailed until the final 2:30. It looked like a common story--after a valiant effort, the low-major squad comes up short at the finish line. But the Bulldogs refused to fold. Ques Glover tied it back up with a couple free throws, then assisted on buckets by Cooper Kaifes and Jermaine Marshall to give Samford enough points to win. Glover, a sophomore, had 16 points and 9 assists for the Bulldogs (3-1)
Runner Up: Weber State 88, Massachusetts 73. A nice win for Weber State on a neutral floor.

What to watch for 11/19.
5:00 PM Wayman Tisdale vs Larry Bird ESPN2. Could be a good game. Indiana State is playing well this year. 7:00 PM Marquette vs West Virginia. ESPN2. Two unranked teams, but probably the Game of the Night. 10:00 PM Wichita State vs Arizona ESPNU. Arizona is favored by 9.5. The PAC 12 should come out of this with a decent win. 12?30 AM #4 Bill Frieder vs Jerry Tarkanian. ESPNU. Michigan is probably in a skull cracking mood after the loss to Seton Hall.

Upcoming Titans’ opponent Hofstra gave #20 ranked Maryland a tough time tonight before falling 69-67. The Terrapins’ winning margin was a couple of made free throws with 4 seconds left in the game.
And Northeastern beat Duquesne by 16.
We won’t get much of a breather after Louisville.

Friday, November 19
Horizon #14 Alabama 86, Oakland 59. The Crimson (4-0) smoked the Grizzlies (2-2). Ah well, we'll always have Oklahoma State. Anyway, Jamal Cain did his part for OU, with 33 points and 10 rebounds.
Youngstown State 79, St. Thomas 75. The Pengins (2-1) had their hands full with D-1 transitioning St. Thomas (1-3), but ground out the win behind 20 points and 8 rebounds from Michael Akuchie.
Mt. St. Mary's 74, Robert Morris 70 (OT). Oh my. A home loss to Mt. St. Mary's. Our Horizon opponents have been as disappointing this year as our Titans. I had really thought the Horizon would be better this year. Silly me. In this one, Mt. St. Mary's scored 16 straight points midway through the second half, rallying from a 15 point deficit. After a few lead changes, the Mountaineers (2-3) forced the overtime on a three point bucket by Deandre Thomas with 1 tick left on the clock. The Mountaineers never trailed in the OT. Khalil Spear had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Colonials (0-4).
Minnesota 78, Purdue-Fort Wayne 49. Mastodons (2-1) were within 5 at halftime, but the game quickly got away from after the break. Jalon Pipkins led the 'Dons with 19 points.
Florida Internationa 63, Green Bay 60. For the third time this year, Green Bay (0-4) comes up just short of victory. This was a tight, back and forth game. Donovan Ivory led Green Bay with 27 points.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents #20 Maryland 69, Hofstra 67. Hofstra is just 1-3 but has battled Houston, Maryland, and Iona close on the road. Maryland tied this one with 23 seconds left, blocked a shot, and got two free throws with 4 seconds left to win.
Northeastern 71, Duquesne 55. Shaquille Waters led Northeastern (2-2) with 21 points.
Other Games #4 Michigan 74, UNLV 61. With a 12:30 a.m. start time, this was too late for my blood.
#1 Gonzaga 92, Bellarmine 50. #7 Duke 88, Lafayette 55. We are here! #11 Memphis 74, Western Kentucky 62. #13 Kentucky 77, Ohio 59. Ohio (3-1) led most of the first half and at several points early in the second half, but a 13-3 Kentucky run midway through the second half finally broke open a tie game and the Wildcats (3-1) cruised home from there.
#21 Auburn 58, South Florida 52. #22 St. Bonaventure 68, Clemson 65. The Bonnies (4-0) dispel any lingering doubts by taking out previously unbeaten Clemson (4-1) in South Carolina. St. Bonaventure rallied from 16 down to do it.
Georgia Tech 88, Georgia 78. The Yellowjackets outscored the Bulldogs 17-5 over the final 4 minutes. Boise State 82, Temple 62. Temple (1-3) gets blitzed for the second night in a row. Arizona 82, Wichita State 78 (OT). Utah State 85, New Mexico State 58. Marquette 82, West Virginia 71. The Eagles are 5-0 and looking good.
Norfolk State 90, Bowling Green 84. The Spartans are 5-0. Davidson 72, Penn 60. Tonight's all-academic battle. Massachusetts 93, UNC-Greenboro 90 (OT). James Madison 67, George Mason 64. It would be cool if the teams would have a rousing debate over the proper scope of federal powers at halftime.
Maryland Eastern Shore 75, Fordham 73. If Fordham didn't suck, this would be a candidate for Mid-Major Win of the Day.
Mid Major Win of the Day: Southern Illinois 67, Colorado 63. Does the PAC 12 serve any purpose beyond providing the Mid Major Win of the Day most days?

What to watch for 11/20.
Cheez It Hall of Fame Tip Off This event is giving us a November Final Four. Enjoy.
1:00 PM #5 Villanova vs #17 Illinois ESPN News 4:00 PM #6 Purdue vs #18 North Carolina
Other games: 6:00 PM Fairleigh Dickinson vs St. John's FS2. SJU wants a win to get past that loss to Indiana. 8:00 PM Western Illinois vs DePaul FS2. In years past, DePaul would follow up a big win with a disappointing loss. We'll see old habits die hard.

Saturday, November 20
Horizon Louisville 73, Detroit 67. It's always hard to win when you have a seven and a half minute scoring draught in which you are outscored 18-0. The Titans showed some scrap to fight back, but not only were they unable to make the big plays, they rather thoroughly botched some big play situations. The Titans look a bit better each game, but it is frustrating--we haven't had a meaningful win in years. AD was better tonight, with 27 points on six threes, but he still needed 25 shots and was just 40% from the floor overall and 37.5% from three. Akec continues to be a pleasant surprise. But Harvey simply is not replacing, let alone improving on, Bul Kuol, and we're still down a Waterman. A week off before tough games with Hofstra and Northeastern, both predicted to finish near the top of the Colonial Athletic Association.
SIU-Edwardsville 69, Youngstown State 66. Youngstown State (2-2), now sans Garrett Covington for the year, loses at home to SIUE. Not good for the HL. Not good at all. SIUE (2-3) won it on a three at the buzzer.
Loyola 80, UIC 63. Demaria Franklin had 22 points and 12 rebounds for UIC (2-2), but didn't get much support from his teammates. Loyola is 4-0.
Cleveland State 80, Canisius 70. D'Moi Hodge had 27 for the Vikings (2-2).
Other Games That Caught My Eye: Michigan State 83, Eastern Michigan 59.
#5 Villanova 71, #17 Tennessee 53. 'Nova (3-1) held the Volunteers (2-1) to just 15 first half points.
#6 Purdue 93, #18 North Carolina 84. Purdue (6-0) takes some of the sting out of the B10's poor showing in the Gavitt Games. Sasha Stefanic had 23 points and 8 assists, Jaden Ivory had 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists, and Michigander Trevion Williams had 20 points in just 13 minutes of play. Dawson Garcia had 26 points for the Tarheels (3-1).
#8 Texas 79, San Jose State 45. #9 Baylor 86, Stanford 48. #23 Connecticut 87, Binghamton 63.
Drake 73, Richmond 70. Monmouth 87, St. Joe's 75. The A-10's non-conference woes continue. Austin Peay 87, Dayton 81. The A-10's non-conference woes continue. Colorado 84, Duquesne 76 (OT). Upset-minded Duquesne (1-4) never trailed in regulation, but allowed the Buffs (4-1) to tie it on a three with two seconds remaining, and then fell in OT. No saving grace here for the A10.
Northern Arizona 89, UT-Rio Grande Valley 87. Rio Grande junior Justin Johnson had 35 points and 10 rebounds. Brown 65, Bradley 62. Another solid non-conference win for the Ivies. Central Arkansas 70, Oral Roberts 67. Max Abmas was 3-18 from the field, finishing with just 8 points. Manhattan 76, Liberty 60. Liberty has been pretty good lately, but they're off to a 1-3 start this year. Manhattan is 4-1.
Carver College Follies: Gardner Webb 100, Carver Bible 38. Carver came so close to holding a D-1 opponent to fewer than 100 points.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: Colgate 100, Syracuse 85. Colgate, if you don't know, is located in Hamilton, New York, about 35 miles from Syracuse. It's one of the prettiest campuses I've even been on. It's one of the smallest D-1 schools, with an undergraduate enrollment of about 3000. This may not be the best Syracuse team, but this is still a really nice win for the Raiders. Colgate (2-2) never trailed in the second half.

What To Watch for 11/21.
1:00 PM #5 Rollie Massimino vs #6 Gene Keady ABC. Really nice match up for a Sunday afternoon in November. Nova can keep the Big East momentum going over the Big Ten. Purdue will try to stop the tide.
3:00 PM Oklahoma vs Utah State ESPN2. Should be a close battle in the Myrtle Beach Invitational.
3:30 PM #17 Tennessee vs #18 North Carolina ESPN. Both teams looking to bounce back after losses on Saturday.
5:00 PM Clemson vs West Virginia ESPN 2.
7:30 PM #22 St. Bonaventure vs Marquette ESPN. St. Bonnie is trying to hold on to that ranking. Marquette is trying to keep their early season surprising momentum going.
9:30 PM Arizona vs #4 Michigan ESPN. Opportunity for the PAC 12 to get a big win in the non-conference for the first time in two years.
11:59 PM Wichita State vs UNLV ESPN2. For the night owls.
