The PAC 12 doing that PAC 12 thing, getting their bid in for MMWOTD. Princeton 81, Oregon State 80.

Looks like Oakland is a team to watch in the Horizon. Beat Oklahoma State. Also beat Toledo by 21 points, a team we lost to by 8 points. Kampe is working his magic again.

Sunday, November 21
Horizon So far, the Horizon has--Oakland excepted--has been really bad in non-conference play. Today brought two more losses.
Weber State 68, Green Bay 58. Weber State is 5-0; Green Bay is 0-5.
Niagara 58, Youngstown State 53. The Penguins (2-3) lose two out of three at their own invitational.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Northeastern 59, Southern Illinois 47. The Huskies (3-2) won their 3rd in a row. They've given up an average of just 50 points in the little streak.
Other Games of Interest Arizona 80, #4 Michigan 62. A bad week for Juwan Howard's team, which started it off with a loss to Seton Hall and ended it with this one. Two losses to solid but unranked teams.
#6 Purdue 80, #5 Villanova 74. Purdue gets a bit of revenge for the B10's poor showing in the Gavitt Games. All 5 Purdue starters reached double figures, led by 7-4 sophomore center Zach Edey. How good is Purdue? First team All Big 10 selection and All America Honorable Mention Trevion Williams comes off the bench.
#17 Tennessee 89, #18 North Carolina 72.
#22 St. Bonaventure 70, Marquette 54. Marquette was off to a 5-0 start, including impressive wins over West Virginia and #10 Illinois, but the Bonnies made Marmincemeat out of them. The Bonnies (6-0) are the real deal.
Xavier 88, Norfolk State 48. Norfolk gets a dose of reality after a 5-0. Ball State 89, Massachusetts 86. The A10's non-conference woes continue.
Indiana 76, Louisiana 44. Utah 72, Tulsa 58. Utah State 73, Oklahoma 70. West Virginia 66, Clemson 59. Colorado State 95, Creighton 81. CSU's David Roddy had 36 points. Both teams entered the game at 4-0.
Navy 77, Furman 66. Two good mid-majors. Furman beat Louisville 80-72; Navy lost at Louisville 77-60.
Georgia State 74, High Point 66. Corey Allen, last week's Sunbelt player of the week after opening the season with 45 points in the Panthers' first two games, missed his second game in a row with an injury. Things have not been going well for Tubby Smith at High Point (2-3), which is now 20-51 over the last three seasons.
Mid Major Win of the Day: Princeton 81, Oregon State 80. I complete the MMWOTD feature by randomly filling in the blanks with the name of a PAC 12 team.

Wright State loses again. 74-63 to George Washington.
Tanner Holden had 24 points. In the battle of similarly named players, WSU's Grant Basile was bested by GW's Joe Bamisile, 15-11 points.

I thought the Horizon League was supposed to be SO improved this season, possibly even getting an at large bid. Besides Oakland, I'm not impressed

Oakland is off to a good start. Their zone frustrates many opponents who have not seen it much. The presence of Baldwin Jr was supposed to make us a two-bid league according to many experts. Others thought simply that the league was more competitive top-to-bottom. That's not the same thing as saying the league got stronger against other conferences.

Ya HS it’s all in how you say it. Don’t ya know? Being serious now, maybe Oakland will get the at large. They are building a good case for themselves. I’ve watched CS, WS and Milwaukee each a couple times and was not impressed.

A score I missed from last week but worth reporting: Ferris State walloped Hillsdale, 80-59. Hillsdale was ranked #3 in the nation in D-2. Andy Bronkema's team is 4-0.

Cleveland State blew a 14 point lead and then Coppin State blew a 5 point lead in their game at the Wolstein.
Here's the end of the Western Illinois-Northern KY game in which former Titan Chris Brandon played an important role in the outcome by missing 3 of 4 free throws with 4 and 5 minutes left in the game plus he blocks the final shot only to send it right into the hands of the WIU player who made it for the game winner in WIU's 69-67 win over NKU which blew a 19 point lead on its home court.

Monday, November 22nd Games
Horizon
Oakland 63, Vermont 61. Moore hits a 3-point shot with 11 seconds left to salvage another win after Oakland blew a huge first half lead in opener of Gulf Coast Showcase. Oakland plays Rice today.
George Washington 74, Wright State 63. Braden Norris' brother Keaton could not help WSU. In the undercard, Bamisile defeats Basile 15-13. Game was in the Naples, FL MTE. The Raiders play James Madison today in a reverse Founding Fathers tour.
Cleveland State 65, Coppin State 62. in the battle of the CSU's the Vikes blew a 14 point lead and overcame a bench technical against walk-on Steinberg for taunting a CSU player. Another Wolstein win for the Vikings.
Western Illinois 69, Northern Kentucky 67. The Norse blew a 19 point lead. Chris Brandon missed 3 of 4 FT's late in 2nd half. And in a bit of karma, he blocked the WIU final shot into the hands of a WIU guard who scored the winner with 0.2 seconds left. Another home loss for the Norse.
Other Titan Opponents
Richmond 81, Hofstra 68. At Richmond, the Pride had the first half lead only to go scoreless in the first 3:58 of the 2nd half. Then tied it with 9:50 left but the Spiders held the Pride to 5 points in the last 8:25 to win going away.
Kent State 74, James Madison 69. In the Naples Invitational, the Golden Flashes led by 10 but JMU fought back and had a 3 point lead with 9:25 left. Kent pushed it back to a 9 point lead with 5 minutes left and JMU cut it to a 1 point game with 44 seconds left. Flashes then made 4 straight FTs to win. Jacobs with 18 and big man Hamilton had 16 for KSU. Kent State plays George Washington today as it continues its Founding Fathers tour.
Wyoming 68, Grand Canyon 61. In a battle of unbeaten teams, the Cowboys went to 4-0 led by Hunter Maldonado's 17 points.
Toledo 98, Charlotte 86 in the Nassau Classic. The Rockets shot 52% from the floor and 44% from 3-point to win. They played no defense. The Cornbread Maxwells shot 59% to hang in there. Former CSU Viking Sedric Millner had 27. Dakota HS's Ryan Rollins had 22 and RayJ Dennis had 21 for Toledo. Toledo plays Tulane today.
Iowa 109, Western Michigan 61. Lamar Norman, Jr had 19 for the Broncos at Iowa City. WMU travels to Dunk City on Friday.
Gonzaga 107, Central Michigan 54 In Las Vegas and the Good Sam Empire MTE , the Chips should have remained in the casinos. Former Milwaukee Panther and several other school player Harrison Henderson had 11 to lead the Chips. Jermaine Jackson, Jr. came off the bench for 8 points. Aundre Polk did not fare well against Holmgren and Timme. Former UIC player Bissanthe had 6 points and 6 rebounds for CMU. CMU plays Bellarmine today.

And in a bit of karma, he blocked the WIU final shot into the hands of a WIU guard who scored the winner with 0.2 seconds left. The Horizon--which I really did think would be good this year and rebound somewhat in the conference rankings--continues to suck eggs. Wright State has lost to GW and Marshall, which are not horrible losses but games your conference's best teams should win; and when they played a real power--Purdue--they got wiped out by 40. Same story with NKU losing to Western Illinois. The Leathernecks (4-1) are a good team this year, but NKU's loss was home. The Coppin State team CSU barely beat is now 1-7. Meanwhile: Elsewhere in College HoopsSeven of our nine Non-Conference Opponents were in action, including the valiant Chippewas, who took on #1 Gonzaga. Iowa 109, Western Michigan 61. I don't recall the Broncos (1-3) being this bad in a long time. Don't let that mark in the win column fool you--they won at home against Hope. Toledo 98, Charlotte 86. The Rockets (3-1) drop Charlotte (3-1) from the early unbeaten ranks. Kent State 74, James Madison 69. The Golden Flash (2-1) drops Madison (4-1) from the early unbeaten ranks. Richmond 81, Hofstra 68. Like the Titans, our next opponent, Hofstra (1-4), has had a tough time against a tough schedule. The Dutchmen were led by ... wait for it ... Darlingstone Dubar with 18 points. Great name. I'm not sure it's Dutch. Colorado State 71, Northeastern 61. We'll play Northeastern (3-3) after Hofstra. Wyoming 68, Grand Canyon 61. The Cowboys advance to 4-0 behind Hunter Maldonado's 17 point, 7 rebound, 7 assist game. #1 Gonzaga 107, Central Michigan 54. A steady grinding down of CMU. Don't know if it tells us much about our mid-December game with the Chips (1-3). #2 UCLA 75, Bellarmine 62. So the stage is set: #1 Gonzaga v. #2 UCLA, 10:00 p.m. EST tonight in Las Vegas, in a rematch of last year's national semi-final. Doesn't get any better during the regular season. This is the 26th time that #1 has met #2 during the regular season--the last was #2 Kentucky over #1 Michigan State in the opening game of the 2019-20 season. When you think about it, it's surprising (at least to me) that, on average, #1 has managed to meet #2 during the regular season a bit more than once every three years. #5 Duke 107, The Citadel 81. #10 Kentucky 86, Albany 61. #12 Houston 70, Butler 52 #13 Arkansas 72, Kansas State 64. Cincinnati 71, #14 Illinois 51. Illinois (2-2) appears to have been overrated to start the season. Ohio State 79, #21 Seton Hall 76. The Big 10 continues to exact revenge from the Big East for its poor showing in the Gavitt Games. #23 Florida 80, California 60. #24 Southern Cal 98, Dixie State 71. Providence 77, Northwestern 72. Virginia 65, Georgia 55. LSU 83, Belmont 53. Siena 72, Harvard 69. More importantly, on the gridiron Saturday it was Harvard 34, Yale 31. Rice 109, Evansville 104 (3OT). Evansville (2-4) never trailed or was tied in regulation until giving up a game-tying bucket by Chris Mullins with 4 seconds left in regulation. Evansville led in the first OT but Mullins tied it with a free throw with 2 seconds left. Evansville spent the night wondering how this one got away, and steaming at Chris Mullins, who finished with 25 points. Rice is 4-1. Duquesne 78, Bradley 70. Carver College Follies: McNeese State 98, Carver Bible 54. The Carver boys did it, holding a D-1 opponent below 100 points for the first time in 7 tries this season. Let's get to know those interpid Carver nimrods: Dyllon Scott had 16 points to lead the team. Lafayette 53, Rutgers 51. Did Rutgers suddenly join the PAC 12? Mid-Major Win of the Day: St. Mary's 62, Notre Dame 59. The Gaels won a thriller in Hawaii and are now 5-0.

Other observations from 11/22:
The PAC 12 tried to participate in the MMWOTD discussion, but Colorado beat Brown by 2 and Washington overcame an eight point halftime deficit to beat George Mason.
Providence added another Big Ten scalp to it's resume', beating Northwestern.
South Dakota State 102, Nevada 75. Nevada was picked a solid 3 in the tough Mountain West, but they have started the year 1-4. All their losses are to mid majors. Curious.
San Francisco 83, Morgan State 67. The Dons move to 6-0. All their games have been at home, and they have played all mid majors. They do have wins over a decent Davidson team and a Nevada team that was supposed to be pretty good. Not a really strong SOS, but still 6-0. Kind of the opposite of what our Titans are doing with the schedule, but unlike U-D, the Dons will get the opportunity for some good wins during the conference slate.
Florida State 81, Missouri 58. Look for the 'Noles to be a beast late in the season.
The Santa Clara Broncos are making a case: 5-0, including wins over Stanford, Nevada, and now TCU (85-66). Impressive.

Didn't Hofstra stupidly change their nickname to the pride (as in lions) a few years ago?
