Horizon
Purdue-Fort Wayne 81, Detroit 78. PFW (20-10, 15-6) claims a share of the league title and the #2 tournament seed in their second year in the conference. It was their 9th win in a row, fueled by astronomical shooting in the first half. This team is playing very well. The Titans actually played a very good game and showed a lot of poise and heart to battle back, but they just couldn't get the key buckets in the final minutes. We finish 6th--if we'd been able to make up the cancelled games, we likely would have finished 5th, but no higher. We'll play Green Bay in the opening round, and barring a major upset by IUPUI, our quarterfinal game on Thursday will be at 3rd place finisher Northern Kentucky.
Oakland 65, Cleveland State 57. Good senior day for Oakland (19-11, 12-7), especially given that Kampe sat Trey Townsend for rest. This moves them back ahead of us in the conference standings, which ticks me off. They claim the #5 seed and will host IUPUI on Tuesday, then play at ______ on Thursday.
Wright State 71, Robert Morris 61. Wright State (18-13, 15-7) trailed by 8 early in the second half, before finally waking up and going on a 29-8 run to take command against the Colonials (7-23, 5-16). They'd already gained a first round tournament bye thanks to the Titan loss.
Northern Kentucky 75, Youngstown State 62. The Norse (18-11, 14-6) began pulling away in the final four minutes of the first half, and won with ease. It's not all bad for YSU. They finish the regular season 18-13, and a first round tournament win against Robert Morris would equal the Penguins' most wins in a season since 2001. They've also had three consecutive winning records for the first time since 1985, and their 12-9 mark is their best conference record in 21 seasons in the Horizon.
UIC 71, Milwaukee 58. Poor Milwaukee.
Green Bay 67, IUPUI 41. Someone had to win a match up of the league's 11th and 12th place teams.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents
Kent State 73, Central Michigan 71. Kent (19-9) won its 10th in a row on an old-fashioned 3 point play by Sincere Carry. The Chips fall to 7-20.
Western Michigan 78, Bowling Green 67. Western Michigan (7-22) has won 3 of 5, giving fans some hope for next year.
Toledo 88, Miami 73. Michigander Ryan Rollins had 24 for MAC leader Toledo (23-6).
Mississippi State 74, Vanderbilt 69. Mississippi State (17-12) rallied late to beat Vandy (14-14). The Bulldogs probably have to beat Auburn on Tuesday to have any at-large hopes.
Wake Forest 99, Louisville 77. The 'Ville is 12-16. Wake is 22-8.
Wyoming 74, Nevada 61. The Titans' loss to Wyoming (23-5) wasn't quite as bad as it appeared at the time.
Elon 67, Northeastern 54. Northeastern drops to 8-21. The Titans' loss to Northeastern is worse than it appeared at the time.
Hofstra 83, William & Mary 67. Hofstra (20-10) will finish third in the CAA.
Other Games of Interest
Wow! The top 6 teams in the rankings all lost today. Wonder when that last happened, if ever.
Michigan State 68, #4 Purdue 65. Michigan State (19-9) stopped its bleeding, thanks to a three pointer by Tyson Walker with 4 seconds to play.
Ball State 75, Eastern Michigan 64.
Michigan Tech 65, Lake Superior State 56.
Northern Michigan 83, Ferris State 87. Michigan Tech (20-6) and Ferris State (21-7) tie for the GLIAC title. The Ferris Bulldogs hold the #1 seed in the conference tournament, which starts on Tuesday.
#23 St. Mary's 67, Gonazaga 57. Clearly the MMWOTD, though not designated as such. It was the Bulldogs first loss in WCC play in over two years, and only their second since January 2018.
Colorado 79, #2 Arizona 63. The Buffs (19-10) took control early in the second half and blew it open in the final 5 minutes.
#10 Baylor 80, #5 Kansas 70. The Bears (24-5) closed to within a half game of the Jayhawks (23-5).
#17 Tennessee 67, #3 Auburn 62. Auburn (25-4) has lost 3 of 6 and now has Kentucky, Tennessee (21-7), and Arkansas jammed up one game behind them.
#18 Arkansas 75, #6 Kentucky 73. Oscar Tshiebwe had 30 points and 18 rebounds for Kentucky (23-6), but Arkansas (23-6) came out a winner behind 30 points and 8 assists from JD Notae.
#7 Duke 97, Syracuse 72.
TCU 69, #9 Texas Tech 66. TCU (18-9) was in danger of falling out of the NCAA field after losing 4 of 5, and with their next two games back-to-back against Kansas, the Toads desperately needed a win. After trailing all game, they rallied from a double digit second half deficit to take the lead with just over a minute to play, and held on to beat Tech (22-7).
#11 Providence 72, Creighton 51.
#12 UCLA 94, Oregon State 55. Not close.
#13 Wisconsin 66, Rutgers 61. The Badgers (23-5) take over first place in the Big 10.
#16 USC 70, Oregon 69.
#19 Murray State 70, Southeast Missouri State 68. Murray State (28-2), a charter member of the Ohio Valley Conference at the league's founding in 1948, closed out its final season in the OVC with a perfect 18-0 conference record. Give credit to SEMO (13-17), though, which missed a three at the buzzer for the win.
#20 Texas 82, West Virginia 81. That was close!
#24 Alabama 90, South Carolina 71.
Seton Hall 82, Xavier 66. A battle for seeding.
Marquette 64, Butler 56. I presume Lavall Jordan will be back, but will be in the hot seat next year at Butler. The Bulldogs are 13-17 after today's loss, following last year's 10-15, and 16-17 in 2019.
Notre Dame 90, Georgia Tech 56. The Irish are 17-2 after a 4-6 start to the season.
North Carolina 84, North Carolina State 74.
Virginia Tech 71, Miami 70. Tech (18-11) keeps its slim at-large hopes alive.
Florida State 64, Virginia 63. Hello NIT! This was a great finish. Virginia took the lead on a short jumper with 0.4 seconds left. FSU got the ball in on a baseball pass just past half court, and Matthew Cleveland fired off a blind turn-around three just before the buzzer that went through the hoop.
Iowa State 74, Kansas State 73. K State (14-14) cut a 12 point deficit to 1 in the final two minutes, but ran out of time.
Oklahoma 66, Oklahoma State 62 (OT). Oklahoma (15-14) absolutely needed this rivalry game.
La Salle 62, Dayton 60. La Salle, which entered the game 2-13 in the A10, all but knocked Dayton (20-9) out of the A10 race, leaving the Flyers two games behind Davidson with two to play.
North Texas 56, Louisiana Tech 49. The Mean Green (22-4) wrapped up a share of the regular season title and the top seed in the CUSA tournament by downing the Bulldogs (20-8).
Boise State 86, UNLV 76.
Colorado State 66, Utah State 55.
South Dakota State 86, Kansas City 75. The Jackrabbits (27-4) won their 18th in a row.
Norfolk State 63, South Carolina State 59. Norfolk State (19-6) wrapped up at least a share of the MEAC title by downing the Bulldogs (15-13).
Bryant 78, Wagner 70. Bryant (19-9) captured the NEC regular season title with a second half comeback win over Wagner. After a 15-game winning streak, Wagner (19-5) lost 3 of its last 5. Bryant's Peter Kiss, the nation's leading scorer, led the Bulldogs (what school isn't named "Bulldogs" these days?) with 23 points.
Mid-Major Win of the Day. Northern Iowa 102, Loyola 96 (OT). Loyola's last regular season game in the MVC was a showdown with Northern Iowa for the regular season title, and it was a barnburner. Though the Ramblers came up short, it was a super game and appropriate finish to a very profitable Loyola run in the Missouri Valley. A decade in the MVC turned Loyola from a Horizon League perennial also-ran into a national mid-major power with a Final Four appearance, a Sweet 16, national rankings, and 5 straight 20-win seasons and counting as they head to the Atlantic 10.
