What to Watch on February 19.
Noon #12 Bruce Douglas vs #19 Sam Vincent. ESPN. Big game for Illinois, bigger game for Michigan State.
12:30 PM #11 Texas Tech vs #20 Texas. ABC. Two teams, coaches, and fanbases that don't like each other in a big with all kinds of implications. College basketball at its best.
1:00 PM #25 Wimp Sanderson vs #4 Joe B. Hall. CBS. Alabama can beat anyone or lose to anyone, depending on if their three pointers are falling. Kentucky is banged up.
4:00 PM #16 Tennessee vs #23 Arkansas
8:00 PM #6 Wilt Chamberlain vs Jerry West. ESPN. Kansas still hoping to nab a one seed. The tournament dream is slipping away from West Virginia.
10:00 PM Oregon vs #3 Arizona. ESPN. The Ducks have been maddeningly inconsistent, while Arizona has been rolling along, butchering a weak PAC 12 conference.
10:00 PM Christian Welp vs #13 Sidney Wicks. FS1. Washington has played like the "best of the rest" of the PAC 12, outside of the top four. UCLA is in that group chasing Arizona.

Horizon
Youngstown State 74, IUPUI 61. IUPUI is a great opponent to schedule for Senior Day. But YSU is playing well no matter the opponent, and has now won 8 of 9 to move to 18-11 overall, 12-7 in conference. That's their most wins ever in conference play, and equals their most overall wins since 2001. With at least 3 games remaining, they've got a definite chance to win 20, which would equal their most ever since joining D1 in in 1982. It's the first time YSU has put together three consecutive winning seasons since 1985, and the win leaves the 'Guins just a half-game behind Purdue-Fort Wayne for 4th place and the final tournament bye. Michael Akuchie led the way today with 21 points and 13 rebounds. For IUPUI (3-23, 1-14), Chuks Isitua had 14 points and 7 rebounds.
UIC 96, Robert Morris 88. Demaria Franklin had 28 points and Zion Griffin 27 points and 10 rebounds for UIC (11-15, 7-10). Khaliel Spear had 24 points and 9 rebounds for Bob Morris (7-21, 5-14).
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Toledo 68, Central Michigan 66. Central (6-18) gave Toledo a tussle, but Rockets (21-6) held on and moved into a first place tie with Ohio in the MAC.
Buffalo 87, Western Michigan 73. Lamar Norman had 23 in a losing effort for Western (6-21).
#22 Wyoming 75, Air Force 67. Hunter Maldonado had 29 points for the Cowboys (22-4).
Louisville 70, Clemson 61. The Cardinals (12-14) snapped a 7 game losing streak.
Hofstra 76, Northeastern 73. Hofstra (19-9) stays in the CAA hunt, while last place Northeastern falls to 7-19.
Other Games #12 Illinois 79, #12 Michigan State 74. The Spartans' (18-8) woes continue. They trailed the entire game. A late rally cut the deficit from 16, but too little, too late.
Akron 67, Eastern Michigan 48.
#1 Gonzaga 81, Santa Clara 69. The Zags (23-2) pulled away late, probably ending Santa Clara's at-large hopes. For Green Bay Phoenix PJ Pipes led the Broncos with 27 points.
Florida 63, #2 Auburn 62. Florida (17-10) ain't out of the at-large discussion yet, thanks in large part to 26 points from former Cleveland State star Tyree Appleby.
#3 Arizona 84, Oregon 81. #4 Kentucky 90, #25 Alabama 81.
#6 Kansas 71, West Virginia 58. #7 Baylor 72, TCU 62. #9 Duke 88, Florida State 70. #10 Villanova 74, Georgetown 66.
#11 Texas Tech 61, #20 Texas 55. #13 UCLA 76, Washington 50. #23 Arkansas 58, #16 Tennessee 48. Iowa 75, #18 Ohio State 62.
#21 Murray State 62, UT-Martin 60. The Racers (26-2) trailed 8-20 UT-Martin for the first 23 minutes and change, and needed an old-fashioned 3 point play with 10 seconds left to win their 16th straight. #24 Connectcut 72, Xavier 61.
Wake Forest 79, Notre Dame 74. North Carolina 65, Virginia Tech 57. A big game for two teams on the bubble. Virginia 74, Miami 71. Another big game for two teams on the bubble.
Oklahoma State 82, Kansas State 79 (OT). Take K State (14-11) off the bubble. Iowa State 75, Oklahoma 54. At the start of the day, Lunardi had Oklahoma in the field with one of the last four byes. The Sooners have played a tough schedule and lost a bunch of close games, but today wasn't close and they're not just 1 game over .500 at 14-13, with 10 losses in 12 games. I don't think that gets you in.
South Carolina 77, LSU 75. Jermaine Cousnard had 33 for the other USC (16-10).
Boise State 68, Utah State 57. UNLV 72, Colorado State 51. Colorado State (21-4) falls 1.5 behind Boise State in the MWC race. San Diego State 61, Fresno State 44.
Drake 83, Loyola 76. Loyola (20-6), Northern Iowa, and Missouri State are tied atop the MVC, with Drake (19-9) one game back. Seton Hall 66, DePaul 64. DePaul (12-13) has lost 3 games in 7 days by either 2 or 3 points. Davidson 79, St. Louis 58. St. Louis (18-9) pretty much falls out of the A10 race, and probably off the NCAA bubble, with this loss. St. Bonaventure 81, Duquesne 55.
Princeton 81, Yale 75. Princeton (19-5) moves into a tie for first with Yale (15-10) in the Ivy. Colgate 72, Boston U. 53. First place Colgate knocked 3rd place BU (19-10) out of the Patriot race. The Red Raiders (17-11) have won 9 in a row.
St. Mary's 69, BYU 64. South Dakota State 79, St. Thomas 60. Summit leader South Dakota State (25-4) won its 16th in a row, tied with Murray State and Gonzaga for the longest streak in the country.
New Mexico State 82, Grand Canyon 66. Teddy Allen had 30 points and 10 rebounds for the Aggies (22-4). Montana State 76, Southern Utah 71. Montana State (21-6) leads the Big Sky. UC-Santa Barbara 84, Long Beach State 71. The Gauchos (12-10) snapped Long Beach State's 11 game winning streak.
Mid-Major Win of the Day North Texas 58, UAB 57. Tyler Perry (honest) hit two threes in the final 23 seconds--the last with 3 seconds left--to lift North Texas (20-4) past UAB (20-7) in CUSA play. NTU is aiming for an at-large bid should they not win the conference tournament.

What to Watch on February 20.
1:00 PM Michigan vs Wisconsin. CBS.
1:00 PM #14 Michael Young vs Cliff Levington. ESPN. Houston trying not to give up their momentum going into the last stretch of the season. Wichita State hoping to get a good seed in the conference tourney. Note: I saw Michael Young play a lot at Calihan Hall with the Detroit Spirit, when that CBA franchise played in Calihan Hall.
1:00 PM #8 Providence vs Butler. FS1.
3:00 PM Memphis vs SMU. ESPN. Big game for conference tourney seeding and at large hopes.
3:00 PM Marquette vs Creighton. FS1. Teams are separated by half a game in the standings.
5:30 PM Rutgers vs #5 Purdue. FS1.
7:P30 PM Washington State vs #17 USC. FS1.

Sunday, February 20
Horizon Detroit 80, Wright State 75. Well, that got a bit hairy at the end, but the first 27 minutes may have been the best we've played all year. It's a "W," extends the home court win streak to 14, and gets us a nice first weekend on this home stand.
Northern Kentucky 71, Oakland 66. NKU came back from an early 13 point deficit behind 27 points from Marques Warrick. The loss knocked Oakland all the way down to 5th in the HL standings.
Purdue-Fort Wayne 81, Milwaukee 71. Umm, don't look now, but PFW (18-10, 13-6) is actually in second place in the league standings.
Cleveland State 79, Green Bay 67. With this win and Oakland's loss, Cleveland State (19-7, 15-4) clinched the regular season title. The Vikings held Green Bay (4-23, 3-15) scoreless for nearly five minutes late in the second half, breaking open a close game.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: Mississippi State 58, Missouri 56. The Bulldogs (16-11) avoided the upset thanks to a Shakeel Moore bucket with 10 seconds remaining.
Other Exciting Action from Around the Globe #15 Wisconsin 77, Michigan 63. Michigan just can't put a streak together. If they can't do it now, they probably can't in the B10 tournament, which means they look awfully NITish.
#5 Purdue 84, Rutgers 72. #8 Providence 71, Butler 70 (OT). Providence (22-3) rallied from 7 down in the final 2:30 of regulation to tie, and eeked out the OT win.
#14 Houston 76, Wichita State 74 (2OT). Wichita (13-11) tied it with a three pointer with 5 seconds left in the second OT, but Houston (22-4) got it up the court and J'Wan Roberts' dunked it with 1 second remaining--his only basket of the game.
#17 USC 62, Washington State 60. Boogie Ellis won it at the buzzer for USC (22-4).
Creighton 83, Marquette 82. Necessary win for Creighton (17-8). Temple 75, Cincinnati 71.
SMU 73, Memphis 57. Entering the game, Lunardi had SMU (19-6) in his "first 4 out," and Memphis (15-9) in his "last 4 in." I assume that will now be reversed.
Jacksonville State 82, Bellarmine 67. Jacksonville State (18-9) breaks a three-way tie with Liberty and Bellarmine (16-12) for 1st place in the Atlantic Sun.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: Northern Iowa 95, Missouri State 75. This game broke up another three way tie, between Northern Iowa (16-10), Missouri State (20-9), and Loyola at the top of the MVC.

What to Watch for February 21.
7:00 PM Keith Smart vs #22 Kelvin Ransey. FS1. Indiana with the tough task of trying to break a four game losing streak in Columbus. Ohio State will be focused after losing to Iowa on Saturday.
7:00 PM Denny Crum vs Dean Smith. ESPN. It's not often that Louisville and North Carolina play and neither team is ranked.
9:00 PM #10 Vinnie "The Microwave" Johnson vs Bryant "Big Country" Reeves. ESPN. Wounded Baylor is still maintaining that top ten ranking. Oklahoma State is playing for pride (and mostly playing well) after being banned from the NCAA tournament over a years old infraction that had nothing to do with current players and coaches. The NCAA comes down hard on some schools.
9:00 PM Byron Scott vs #13 "Rocket" Rod Foster. FS1. Arizona State is playing their best ball of the season in their current three game winning streak, which includes blowout wins of Oregon and Oregon State. UCLA is looking for payback after ASU beat them in Tempe on February 5.

Monday, February 21,2022
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: North Carolina 70, Louisville 63.
Other Big Games #10 Baylor 66, Oklahoma State 64 (OT). #12 UCLA 66, Arizona State 52. #22 Ohio State 80, Indiana 69 (OT). Indiana (16-10) has lost 5 in a row, 4 of them to ranked teams.
TCU 77, West Virginia 67. TCU (17-8) needed this one, because their next four games are against Texas, Texas Tech, and Kansas (twice). Boston College 71, Florida State 55. Maryland 67, Penn State 61.
Loyola 59, Illinois State 50. The Ramblers (21-6) move back into a tie for first in the MVC with Northern Iowa. Drake 74, Indiana State 58. Drake (20-9) is a game back in the MVC. Valparaiso 74, Evansville 69. These old conference mates are in 7th and 10 places, respectively, in the MVC.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: New Mexico State 68, Seattle 55. In a battle between teams tied atop the WAC, the Aggies (23-4) led for all but a few seconds, but it was close until the final minute. Seattle is 21-7.

What to Watch on February 22 and 23.
EDIT: I totally screwed this up; I was looking at Feb 23 when I put out the list for Feb 22, so you get two entries in one today.
February 22:
7:00 PM Jay Vincent (Kalamazoo) vs #25 Roy Marble (Flint). ESPN. Opportunity for Michigan State, but Iowa likely wins this one at home.
8:00 PM #8 Villanova vs #21 UConn. FS1. Nova playing for a high seed.
9:00 Mitch Richmond vs Ron Kellogg. ESPN. Throw out the records when Kansas State and Kansas mix it up. (Anyone else remember Ron Kellogg and Danny Manning leading Kansas into Calihan Hall in January 1986 and barely escaping with the win? Great game.)
9:00 PM San Diego State vs Boise State. CBSSN. Huge match up in the Mountain West.
11:00 PM UNLV vs Nevada. CBSSN. Medium sized match up in the Mountain West.
February 23:
7:00 PM #7 Gene Banks vs Ralph Sampson. ESPN. Duke has been the most consistent ACC team in a down year for the conference. Virginia is one of the under achievers.
7:00 PM TCU vs #20 Texas. ESPN2. TCU could use a win like this to boost their at large resume. Texas is in good shape but has dropped two of three.
7:00 PM JJ Crawl and Renardo Brown (Highland Park) vs Barry Stevens and Jeff Grayer (Flint Northwestern) ESPNU. West Virginia is having a down year. Iowa State started out like a locomotive but has slowed down significantly lately.
7:00 PM Eddie Jordan vs Ricky Green. BTN. Rutgers travels to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan in the first game the Wolverines play without Coach Howard.
9:00 PM Stanley Roberts vs #6 Rick Roby. LSU has been erratic. Kentucky is looking like a national title threat.
11:00 PM James "Buddha" Edwards vs James Donaldson. ESPNU. Washington vs Washington State in a late night battle in the Evergreen State for the night owls.

Tuesday, 2/22/22 (Gotta use the date)! It's also George Washington's Birthday.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Toledo 92, Western Michigan 50. MAC co-leader Toledo (22-6) was led by a couple of Michiganders, Setric Milner with 28 and Ryan Rollins with 20. Western (6-22) is having its worst season since 1991.
Ohio 76, Central Michigan 50. Ohio (23-5) kept pace with Toledo atop the MAC. Central (6-20) is having its worst season since Jay Smith's last year in 2004.
Kent State 93, Ball State 82. Sincere Carry had 42 points as Kent State (18-9) won its 9th in a row.
Charleston 83, Northeastern 72. Who thought Northeastern would be 7-20? The Huskies are having their worst season since 2002.
Other NCAA Excitement Iowa 84, Michigan State 60. Keegan Murray had 28 for Iowa (19-8). Do you get the feeling the wheels are starting to come off MSU? The Spartans (18-9) have lost 5 of 6. Eastern Michigan 74, Northern Illinois 72. Noah Farrakhan had 31 for EMU (10-18).
#5 Kansas 102, Kansas State 83. #21 Connecticut 71, #8 Villanova 69. A true barn-burner in Hartford. #9 Texas Tech 66, Oklahoma 42. Tech (22-6) avenges an earlier loss, and the Okies drop to .500 at 14-14.

7:00 PM Aaron McKie vs Penny Hardaway ESPN. Temple and Memphis, both coached by famous alums, meet in a game with both NCAA and NIT implications.
7:00 PM Len Bias vs Landon Turner FS1. Maryland is playing out the string, but this is almost a "must win" for Indiana. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, they have three rotation guards out with injury tonight.

Thursday, February 24
Horizon
Detroit 74, Cleveland State 67. A real nice win, and it was great to see AD come back out on the floor and drill a key three. That'll be a big dramatic scene then they make the movie "Three Point: The Antoine Davis Story." Of couse, they'll take some liberties--it'll happen in the Elite 8 of the NCAA against Kansas. A night to feel good about the Titans.
Purdue Fort Wayne 81, Oakland 70. PFW rained threes down on Oakland--16 for 32 from deep--and blew out the Grizzlies on the Glaretop. Starting at about the 6:30 mark of the first half, PFW drew steadily away, eventually leading by 20 before allowing Oakland a meaningless late rally. The win was the 8th in a row for the Mastodons (19-10, 14-6). Oakland (18-11, 11-7) is headed in the opposite direction of PFW--they've lost 6 of 8, the last three in the friendly confines of the McRena. Tony Paul is distraught.
Wright State 84, Youngstown State 71. The Raiders led coast to coast behind 29 points from Grant Basile and 27 from Tanner Holden. This win, together with PFW's blitzing of Oakland, freezes the Titans out of a top 4 finish unless Robert Morris can upset Wright State on Saturday.
Northern Kentucky 78, Robert Morris 64. Robert Morris (7-22, 5-15) closed the game on a 19-4 run, which would have been really cool if they hadn't trailed by 29 at the onset of the rally. NKU (17-11, 13-6) clinches a first round bye. Marques Warrick led the Norse with 30 points and 7 rebounds.
UIC 81, Green Bay 77. Milwaukee 66, IUPUI 54. These two games cemented the bottom of the league as UIC 8th, Milwaukee 9th, Robert Morris 10th, Green Bay 11th, and IUPUI 12th.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: Central Michigan 83, Miami (Oh) 69. Central (7-19) dropped 50 points in the Red Hawks (12-16) in the second half, after trailing at halftime.
Northeastern 62, William & Mary 28. The Huskies (8-20) held the Tribe to 11-51 from the floor and 1-17 from three. But Bill & Mar made all 4 extra point attempts.
Some Other Games #1 Gonzaga 89, San Francisco 73. This was San Francisco's last chance to impress the selection committee in the regular season, but they'll get at least 1 good game in the WCC tournament. The Dons are 22-8. Another impressive road win for Gonzaga (24-2), which doesn't need to impress anyone.
#2 Arizona 97, Utah 77. Oregon 68, #12 UCLA 63. #16 USC 94, Oregon State 91 (OT).
#19 Murray State 76, Belmont 43. KJ Williams had 30 points as Murray State (27-2) clobbered Belmont (24-6) in their last regular season meeting as OVC members. #22 Ohio State 86, #15 Illinois 83. #23 St. Mary's 60, San Diego 46.
Indiana 74, Maryland 64. Memphis 78, Temple 64. DePaul 68, Georgetown 65.
Bryant 86, St. Francis (NY) 69. Bryant's Peter Kiss scored 35, and appears to be pulling away in the race to be the nation's scoring leader.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: South Dakota State 106, Oral Roberts 102 (OT). Luke Appel had 41 points for SD State (26-4), which won its 17th in a row. Max Abmas had 34 for ORU (18-10).
