Caught a little of the Hofstra game against Maryland the other night. Even though Maryland won, it was close right up to the end.

Jerry Tarkanian was the Long Beach State coach from 1968-73. That explains it. They must have gotten extra practice hours in. 😁

Jamal Cain is a superstar in this league. I'll be amazed if he's not the POY in the Horizon League this year.

Wednesday, November 24
Horizon Oakland is doing its best to keep the league afloat, but everybody else is punching holes in the ship.
Oakland 81, Delaware 73. Jamal Cain had 28 points and 9 rebounds, and is averaging 22.6 points and 11.2 rebounds on the year. The Grizzlies (5-2) never trailed in this one. And reinforcements are on the way--Zion Young saw his first action of the season and scored 12 points in 10 minutes off the bench. Delaware is 4-2.
Long Beach State 85, Wright State 76. Who thought Wright State would be 1-5 at this point? Grant Basile had 21 points in defeat. Long Beach (2-4) was led by Joe Hampton with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Does the name Joe Hampton ring a bell? Very vaguely, it did for me, so you know me--I went exploring. Joe Hampton, Class of '16, was recruited by Ray McCallum to come to Detroit. Doesn't it seem amazing a guy Ray recruited could still be playing in college? We're talking 2013 here, as Hampton prepared for his sophomore year! Hampton, from Washington, D.C., was early listed as the #24 prospect in his class; then #60; then #126 (he tore his ACL as a senior, leading in large part to the drop). He committed to Penn State; then "decommitted"; then recommitted again; enrolled, and left school early in his first semester. He was supposed to enroll at South Plains JC in Texas, but apparently ended up doing a "prep" year at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia instead for 2016-17. Then a year at Pasadena City College, where he signed early to join Long Beach State for 2018-19. But he didn't join Long Beach--he dropped out of college completely, due to (per one source) "a mix of nagging injuries, family strife, and legal issues related to bank fraud and drug use." He came back and spent 2019-20 at East Los Angeles JC, and finally the last two seasons at Long Beach, where he's averaging 14 points per game.
Yale 69, Milwaukee 56. Pat Baldwin missed this game (and the last 18 minutes of Tuesday's loss) with what I've seen one source call a "ankle sprain" and another call "a bad back." Who thought Wright State and Milwaukee would be a combined 2-9 at this point?
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: Hofstra 87, Malloy 49. Hofstra (2-4) tuned up for Saturday's Titan game by stomping D-2 Malloy. It was the Dutchmen's first home game. Jalen Ray scored 20 to lead the easy win.
Toledo 79, Coastal Carolina 70. Toledo (5-1) broke open a tight game with a 15-0 second half run. Michigan product Ryan Rollins scored 35 points.
East Tennessee State 57, Kent State 51. Sincere Carry (the hokey headlines and announcer comments almost write themselves) had 21 points, but Kent never really got its offense unwound and 4-23 shooting from three doomed the Golden Flash (3-2).
Other Games #20 Michigan 65, Tarleton State 54. The Wolverines (4-2) are struggling and the Texans (1-5) gave them a tussle. Tarleton was within 3 in the final 4 minutes.
Michigan State 63, Loyola 61. Tyson Walker to Marcus Bingham for the alley-oop dunk with 3 seconds left, and Izzo's squad eeked out a win in the Bahamas.
Eastern Michigan 72, Western Illinois 68. EMU is only 2-3, but playing much better than I think most expected, and beat a solid Leatherneck squad in a close game today. Monty Scott scored 16.
#6 Baylor 75, Arizona State 63. #8 Texas 68, Cal-Baptist 44.
#9 Memphis 69, Virginia Tech 58. Checking in on Emoni Bates, the Ypsi star had a tough night with just 9 points on 2-10 shooting. But on the season he's averaging 13.3 points and shooting 48 percent, and Memphis is 4-0.
#12 Houston 78, Oregon 49. Only the margin surprises. #18 BYU 81, Texas Southern 64. #21 Seton Hall 62, California 59.
#22 Connecticut 115, #19 Auburn 109 (2OT). You might wanna go watch the replay on this one. Great game down in the Bahamas.
#23 Florida 71, Ohio State 68. At several points it looked like OSU (4-2) would pull away, but they never did and Florida (5-0) rallied to win in the final minutes.
Iowa State 82, #25 Xavier 70. Iowa State (5-0) remains unbeaten, and Xavier (4-1) doesn't.
Wisconsin 61, St. Mary's 55. The Badgers (5-1) stop the Gael Express. St. Mary's (6-1) had beaten Notre Dame and Oregon the previous two nights.
Florida State 81, Boston U. 80 (OT). Anthony Morales buried a three at the buzzer to force OT, but the Terriers (4-3) came up just short of the upset. BU jumped out to a 75-71 lead in the extra period, and led 80-79 with under a minute to go, but turned it over on one possession and missed a three on the next, allowing the Seminoles (5-1) to win on a put-back with 2 seconds left.
Valparaiso 68, Tulane 64. Nevada 81, Washington 62. The Wolf Pack (3-4) has won two straight since AJ Bramah left, or was booted from, the team. This capped an 0-4 night for the PAC 12.
Carver College Follies: One of these days ... But not this day, as Tennessee-Martin hammers the valiant Cougars 103-43. Antwon Ferrell led Carver with 13 points.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: VCU 67, Syracuse 55.

I am amazed that Joe Hampton got things back on track and is playing college basketball. Good for him. I hope he's doing okay off the court, too.
What to watch for Thanksgiving:
Sure, the Lions are on, but there's plenty of hoop, too.
Noon #22 UConn vs Michigan State ESPN. UConn has recruited well under Danny Hurley, and is starting to put together some wins. The Spartans want to keep that momentum going.
Noon Dayton at Miami ESPN2. Does anyone hate Covid-19 more than the Flyers and their fanbase? The pandemic wiped out the NCAA tournament when they had a legit shot at a Final Four run.
5:00 PM #6 Baylor vs VCU ESPN. The defending national champs are looking pretty good so far.
7:00 PM Maryland vs Richmond CBSSN.
9:30 PM San Francisco vs Towson FS1. The Dons are away from home for the first time.
9:30 PM Louisville vs Mississippi State CBSSN. Ernie Z's Mississippi State team is a 1.5 point favorite.
11.00 PM Georgetown vs San Diego State ESPN.

Thanksgiving Day, 2021
Horizon Hawaii 88, UIC 80. Some good shooting by the Flames (52% overall, 42% on 33 attempts from behind the arc) couldn't offset big deficits in rebounding and turnovers, and the Flames fell to Rainbow Warriors (3-1) in Vegas. Transfers Demaria Franklin (22 points), Kevin Johnson (20 points, 7 assists), and Jalen Warren (14 points) led the Flames (2-3) in scoring.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Louisville 72, Mississippi State 58. Louisville (4-1) had surprisingly little trouble with Mississippi State (4-1), grabbing a double-digit lead midway through the first half and extending it to as many as 26 in the second.
Other Games That Weren't Turkeys Michigan State 64, #22 Connecticut 60. State (5-1) scored the final 9 points for the win.
#4 Kansas 71, North Texas 49. Did you know that North Texas (2-2) is called the "Mean Green" after Mean Joe Greene, who played his college football there? Before that they were the Eagles.
#6 Baylor 69, VCU 61. #19 Auburn 62, Loyola 53. Loyola is still going to the A10. #24 Southern Cal 70, St. Joe's 55.
San Diego State vs. Georgetown. Should be a good late game but I ain't staying up. Maryland 86, Richmond 80. UAB 86, New Mexico 73. Dayton 76, Miami (Fla.) 60. Syracuse 92, Arizona State 84.
Belmont 74, Drake 69. Like an old Bracket Busters game, only in November. Both these mid-majors could be contending for at-large bids in March if they don't win their conference tournaments, so this one could loom large. Nick Muszynski dropped in 31 for Belmont (4-2).
San Francisco 71, Towson 61. USF (7-0) becomes the first D-1 team to seven wins this season.
Mid-Major Win of the Day Iona 72, #10 Alabama 68. Iona rallied late to knock off #10 Alabama in Orlando, avenging a loss in last year's NCAA tournament. Five Gaels scored in double figures, led by Junior Joseph with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Might the Gaels crack the Top 25 next week? Iona (6-0) was last ranked in the 1980 season, when Jimmy Valvano was the coach and Jeff Ruland their star.

What to Watch for November 26.
11:00 AM #6 Baylor vs Michigan State ESPN. The day gets started with a potentially exciting matchup.
1:30 PM Dayton vs #4 Kansas ESPN. Should be a clear Jayhawk win.
1:30 PM VCU vs #22 UConn. The Huskies have played two very tough games in a row. Will fatigue be a factor?
4:30 PM #19 Auburn vs Syracuse ESPN. The Orange have been inconsistent.
5:30 PM Northern Kentucky vs DePaul. FS2. Good chance to scout NKU. Also, the first game for Flint's Jalen Terry as a Blue Demon.
7:00 PM #25 Xavier vs Virgina Tech ESPN2. Our old conference mate is a three-point underdog to VTU.
7:00 PM Arizona State vs Loyola Chicago ESPN News. I know Bobby Hurley signed a big extension not that long ago and his buyout is probably gigantic, but he probably should start winning some games for the Sun Devils.
9:00 PM Iowa State vs #9 Memphis ESPN2. Iowa State is a surprising 5-0 after a putrid 2020-21 season, but stacked Memphis is a double digit favorite.
9:30 PM Oregon State vs Wake Forest CBSSN. Not a game between marquee programs, but it might be an interesting matchup. Oregon State is doing the PAC 12 things; after a surprising run in the NCAA tournament, they are back to their regular season shenanigans, sitting at 1-4 with three losses to mid major teams. They might not be that bad; they lost to Samford and Princeton by 1 and lost to Tulsa by 6. Wake is coming off a 3-15 2020-21 ACC record. The Deacons are 5-0, but they have only played mid majors. Could be a good test for both programs. Or maybe I'm just trying too hard to come up with a reason to watch a rather non-descript college basketball game late at night the day after Thanksgiving.
10:30 PM #5 Duke vs #1 Gonzaga ESPN. How good do you have to be to be a nine point favorite over a 5th ranked Duke team? Gonzaga good. Game of the Day.
11:30 PM #24 George Raveling vs Smokey Gaines ESPN2. The Aztecs have made a habit of collecting PAC 12 scalps in recent years. Last season they beat UCLA and Arizona State, both ranked in the top 25 at the time. A week ago they beat Arizona State again. Could another win be on tap? The Trojans of USC are a 1.5 point favorite.
11:30 PM San Francisco vs UAB FS1. Good mid major match between two teams with a combined 12-1 record.
Enjoy.

This has to be a typo - a win for the Horizon League by a team other than Oakland?
