For St Peters to win they had to stay close, they couldn't play catch up against NC. If they were close at the 9 or 10-minute mark they might have forced NC into mistakes or bad shots and may have won. But NC knew that also and piled on them early.

LOL. I’m way too affluent to go to Bonnie Doon. Affluence has nothing to do with the ability to appreciate a good burger and shake or the ability to understand what causes the final outcome of a athletic contest!

No way the NCAA was going to let St. Peter's prevent a UNC-Duke matchup in the Final Four. The fix is always in. 😉

As I recall, in the HL the payout is divided by the number of schools in the league +1. The additional share goes to the school that "earned" the check. And, yes, paid out over time, not all at once. We all got a nice bump when Butler made those two final game runs, but that is all paid out by now. For St. Peter's the value of the run is going to be publicity, additional applications (although that might not translate into all that many more admissions), and I hope, for their sake, increased alumni contributions and some sponsorships. That will undoubtedly dwarf the cash payout from the NCAA, where the payoffs are broadly skewed to the power conferences that automatically get multiple tourney bids and therefore much higher payouts to split among their member institutions. Each share this year is worth $338,210.96 a year for 6 years. (Last year it was $337,141). So for the Horizon, Wright State's 2 games would be worth about $676,000. I think it may be divided 14 ways, not 13, but I don't know. (1 for each team, 1 more for the team that played, and 1 for the league office). Anyway, in the HL I think each NCAA "unit" is worth about $25,000 to $30,000 per team, so for the next 6 years we get maybe $50-$60K from WSU's appearance this year. But remember that we also are collecting our share of 1 NCAA unit for each of the past 5 years (although each of those shares is worth less because the NCAA per unit value keeps going up). So next year the Horizon League will collect for 7 units--2 from this year, plus 1 from each of the last 5 years, and each team will get a fraction of that--1/13th or 1/14th or whatever. Except I assume they didn't delay payments when the tournament was cancelled in 2020, but nobody got any units. So I guess the league probably gets 6 units next year. Also, I don't know if IUPUI or PFW get anything for the years before they joined the conference. The NCAA encourages conferences to share the loot equally, but there's no requirement that they do so and different leagues divvy it up in different ways. Anyway, it's definitely a cash boost for St. Peter's but unless the MAAC has an unusual system that really skews in favor of the team that played, it's probably not much more than it would be if Iona or Monmouth has reached the Elite 8. Still, and extra $25-$30K/year probably covers St. Peter's recruiting budget. You could do things like improve the locker room, pay for an overseas trip one summer--lots of stuff. And don't forget the money paid by schools leaving or joining the conference. Then again, I hear we just finally got done paying for coaches who were let go.

After becoming one of the faces of Saint Peter’s Cinderella run in the 2022 men’s NCAA tournament, Doug Edert has reportedly entered the transfer portal. Doug Edert, Daryl Banks III and Matthew Lee all entered the portal on Tuesday morning. Banks and Lee were starters at guard while the 6-foot-2 Edert came off the bench for the Peacocks, who upset Kentucky, Murray State and Purdue as a No. 15 seed.

These moves may prove to be a significant threat to St. Peter's long term success.

Professor, with the coach moving on and the transfers, they will likely be right back where they were, with a lot more money.................

These moves may prove to be a significant threat to St. Peter's long term success. With the revolving door of the transfer portal, short tenure of coaches, NIL advantages for the big programs, and more fickle fan bases, I don’t see how any mid-major program will ever develop the continuity to become “the next Gonzaga.”

At this point, I'd settle for being the next Akron. At least to start.

Saint Peter’s bench standout Doug Edert, AKA “The Stache,” has committed to Bryant, according to multiple reports, after announcing earlier this week that he was transferring from the Peacocks, who became the first 15 seed in March Madness history to reach the Elite Eight last month.

Butler made it to back-to-back national-championship games. Look how that program has tanked once Stevens left, even though it did parlay that run of success into a much better league.
Wichita State was on a roll for a while. Now it's not.
It's just really hard for a mid-major to stay relevant, and almost impossible for a low-major like St. Peter's.
Two that have - Gonzaga and St. Mary's - have not changed coaches since their rise to national relevance. Dan Monson chased the big money after his first good season at GU, but Few has stayed, despite numerous offers. Same with Randy Bennett at St. Mary's. Having a good coach, and keeping him, is paramount, especially in the mid-major ranks.

It's really hard for non "blue bloods" to stay at the top, and being a mid-major is even harder. Look what happen to DePaul when the Meyers run ended, or Valpo when the Drews left, even bigger schools like St John's without Caresecca or Georgetown without Thompson. You can almost see the end of the Syracuse 40 year run ending soon, it will be interesting to see what happens at Duke.
Looking back maybe the best bet the U of D might have had after the jump start from the smoke and mirrors of the Vitale years was a long run for Smokey Gaines. Vitale left the program in good shape with the right man, and the school let him get away, Gaines was a Detroiter and would have been happy here for a long time.
