Maten has become quite a player. I'm happy to see him doing so well. Of course, those award lists aren't what they used to be, given the fact that so many players leave college for the NBA. Maten could have a shot at playing in the NBA, which is something I wouldn't have expected when he was in high school. Maten pulls out of draft, will return to Georgia for senior season. Ray and his staff had a great eye for talent. They just couldn't land enough of it. I agree, and they offered scholarships early and often. I've always felt that coach Mac was one big man away from keeping his job. If Deberry could've gotten eligible, Ray McCallum would still be our coach. The Titans offered one of Matens teammates Mike Edwards from Westland John Glen a scholarship and he only averaged 5ppg and 5 rebounds during his Junior season. He had a big Senior season (18 pts,10 rebounds) and Georgia took a flyer on him. He averaged 4.4 pts a game last season for Georgia.

Guys I recall McCallum and crew being on early (and here I don't mean offering 9th and 10th graders that everyone already had super high on their list, but rather guys who had not yet exploded on the recruiting scene, or who vastly exceeded most expectations in college) include, but are not limited to: - Maten - Edwards - DeBerry - Deyonte Davis - Kyle Kuzma - AJ Turner - Bryce Aikins - Vance Jackson - Lorenzo Bonam - Isaiah Livers and a bunch more.

I still have the feeling this might not be the last we hear from Mr. Cherry. What a journey he has taken. He never should have reclassified. erbal Commits @verbalcommits 3m3 minutes ago Former Savannah State G Novian Cherry is transferring to Cal State San Marcos (DII). @humble_02 verbalcommits.com/players/novian-cherry … Novian Cherry Update: He played in just 7 games this season for San Marcos, averaging 2.7 points per game. He seemed to get worse every year--averaged 21.9 points and 6.3 rebounds as a juco freshman, 17.5 and 5.6 as a juco soph, played in 12 games for Savannah State as a junior, and then this final season in D-II sitting on the bench. Cherry will turn 25 later this summer!

Whatever happened to Ray Croon? He was playing well and getting attention at Redford Thurston, transferred to a high school in Livonia, sat out his senior year, and then reportedly went the prep school route. He came to mind because Verbal Commits had been carrying him as a Titan recruit and posted the update that he had "trimmed his list and removed Detroit from consideration." I doubt that is accurate; I don't think we've been recruiting Croon for a long time. He was a talented high school player. It would be a shame if he didn't get back on track. Ray Croon mystery solved. Played at Wayne County Community College, where he put up big numbers, and signed recently with Kentucky State. Good for him. Hope he gets his degree. www.ksuthorobreds.com/news/2017/6/13/mens-basketball-mbb-signs-guard-ray-croon-to-2017-class.aspx

Blue Ribbon has Maten on their preseason third team All America squad, and SEC POY. I don't know how close, if at all, we came to getting Maten, but I think Ray's crew tried hard. What a coup that would have been.

Interesting: Flint native Kyle Kuzma, who had an offer from the Titans, had a solid career at Utah after redshirting as a freshman and was drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Lakers. He played very well in the summer league and has continued that in the NBA preseason. He averaged 17 points per game in the Lakers five game exhibition slate and outplayed last year's first round Lakers pic, Duke's Brandon Ingram. Hopefully, Kuzma can carry his strong play in the regular season. Be nice to have another Michigan guy in the NBA.

When I read quotes like this, it breaks my heart for what could have been: We went hard after him and his Georgia teammate Mike Edwards of Westland. I actually liked our chances with Edwards before the big boys came calling late. Ray offered Edwards a scholarship after his junior year in high school, where he averaged only 5 points per game. He had a big senior year and drew more attention, and Georgia stole him at the last minute as I recall. Edwards is probably playing a level above his ability in the SEC, but he would have been a good player in the HL. Maten of course, would be player of the year in the HL with a coaching staff that took advantage of his talents.

Jordan Nobles was one of our front court targets back in 2014. He had a Titan offer, but once the Titans signed Hogan and Foster-Smith, Nobles signed with EMU. At the time, Nobles seemed to be more of a project, but he is starting to live up to his potential. He was took a red shirt year as a freshman, and after appearing in 29 games last year as a red shirt freshman, this season his improvement is apparent. He has moved into the starting lineup recently, and in the past five games he is averaging 12 points and 8 rebounds per game. He has totaled six blocks and eight steals during that time. With the Titans as thin up front as they are, it would be nice to have Nobles, but hindsight is 20/20 of course. I've had the opportunity to watch Jordan Nobles in action a few times for EMU. He never did pick up much weight, currently listed at 6-9, 195, but he has turned into a very solid defender. Runs the court well, plays the passing lanes, capable of finishing near the basket and a 37% three point shooter. (Worked hard on it, too. Was 0-2 from three in 31 games as a redshirt freshman but is 30-81 this season.) Crazy how things work out. He took a red shirt year as a freshman, as did Aaron Foster-Smith, but it is crazy to think that he is the only guy out of those three Titan front court targets in 2014 (Nobles, Hogan, AFS), who is still playing college basketball at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Jordan Nobles is reportedly leaving the EMU program as a grad transfer. That's a loss for EMU, as he is a very good defender and a capable three point shooter. Not sure what is motivating him to leave, but I doubt that Coach Murphy is pushing him out. Whatever the case, I wish the young man luck. It would not shock me to see him land with a high major program as a role player. I always thought that Nobles would have committed to U of D if Hogan and AFS had not committed prior. As I recall, he was super excited about his Detroit offer.

Former Titan target Tarin Smith is leaving Nebraska. Verbal Commits @verbalcommits 51s52 seconds ago Nebraska G Tarin Smith is leaving the program. (HT @huskerextrabr) verbalcommits.com/players/tarin-smith … Update on Tarin from Twitter: Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 17m17 minutes ago Nebraska transfer Tarin Smith has committed to Duquesne, source told @cbssports. Three years of eligbility remaining. I remember when the Titans were recruiting Tarin Smith. He was a solid prospect, a three star player with high major interest, and at the time I thought that Ray might be able to pull him in. The Titans were recent NCAA tourney and NIT participants, and Young Ray had excelled at U-D, so it seemed like a good landing spot for Smith. He got the big school offer from Nebraska and committed there, but left after a year. This past year he played well for Duquesne, averaging 12 points per game, but he recently announced he was taking advantage of the grad transfer rule to move on. He has landed at UConn.
