We went hard after him and his Georgia teammate Mike Edwards of Westland. I actually liked our chances with Edwards before the big boys came calling late. Ray offered Edwards a scholarship after his junior year in high school, where he averaged only 5 points per game. He had a big senior year and drew more attention, and Georgia stole him at the last minute as I recall. Edwards is probably playing a level above his ability in the SEC, but he would have been a good player in the HL. Maten of course, would be player of the year in the HL with a coaching staff that took advantage of his talents. Yante Maten named SEC Player of the Year. Congratulations to another Michigan native doing big things. Article and video interview with Yante Maten, who is hoping to hear his name called during the NBA draft this week. Funny how the league has changed (and not for the better, in my opinion). Used to be a time when a guy with Yante's size who could score and rebound at the high major level was looked upon very highly by NBA scouts. www.freep.com/story/sports/nba/2018/06/19/bloomfield-hills-yante-maten-preparing-life-nba/707868002/

Happened to run across the distinctive name Mar'qyell Jackson. Recall Jackson signed with UTEP, then transferred out after like 2 days at the school. He sat out 14-15 at Duquesne, then appeared in 25 games as a redshirt freshman in 2015-16, averaging 3.7 points and 2 rebounds. Then he transferred to Moberly Area Community College in Missouri, a good juco program, and then ended up at Pitt State, a D-II school in Missouri, last season. He averaged 5.7 ppg in about 17 minutes per game. Presumably he's got another year of eligibility, but doesn't show up on their 2018-19 roster, which is published.
That led me to another guy the Titans looked at, but didn't offer, in 2014--forward Leonard Harper-Baker. He did a "prep school" year in 2015 then ended up at Moberly, in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He then went to Southern Mississippi last year, and was red-shirted.
I also found on that Moberly 2017 roster Detroiter Dietrich Cole, a 2014 center from East English. He played a year at Jacksonville State, then was at Moberly in 2017 and Pitt State last year. He seemed to disappear in 2016 (injury? just left school?).
So the three Michiganders from 2014 all found their way to Moberly in 2017.
Lotta vagabonds these days. Is it really worth it?

Another Michiganger at Moberly is Billy Thomas, a rising sophomore from Farmington Hills.

Kenny Goins given a scholarship at MSU this year. Kenny is certainly earning that scholarship. He started against Kansas last night and scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Heck of a game for the young man, who is a red shirt senior this year. I think we had a good shot at Goins out of high school had he not decided to go to MSU as a walk on. His accomplishments at East Lansing are a testament to his hard work and ability. Good for him.

Kenny Goins had 9 points and 16 rebounds in the Spartan win over the Wolverines yesterday, in his final home game as a Spartan. His career has been exceptional, and a testament to his hard work and dedication. I am happy for the young man. Would have loved to see him as a Titan, but he made the right decision.

Maten has become quite a player. I'm happy to see him doing so well. Of course, those award lists aren't what they used to be, given the fact that so many players leave college for the NBA. Maten could have a shot at playing in the NBA, which is something I wouldn't have expected when he was in high school.

Way back in the class of 2014, the Titans scouted a Detroit Southeastern player named Leonard Harper-Baker. We didn't offer, whether because Ray and crew didn't think he was good enough, or academic issues, I don't know. He went prep for a year, then juco, took a redshirt year, and now, more than 5 years after high school graduation, here he is, the poster boy for Southern Miss this year:
Last year, Harper-Baker averaged 10 points and 8 rebounds for Southern Miss, shooting 56% from the floor. Congrats to him, and for persistence.

I saw Mr. Maten in action for the Orlando Magic summer league team against the Pistons tonight. Got some crunch time minutes and a bucket on a tip in at the buzzer. Had a better college career than most of the "experts" thought he would. Was outstanding at Georgia, who came in with an offer at the 11th hour.
