That's exactly why it's a good pickup. I thought he'd go high major, so South Alabama got a steal You're right, it is definitely a steal for South Alabama. I am just surprised that was his pick, given who was recruiting him. But obviously he wasn't just interested in the biggest stage. I don't know Flowers, obviously, so who knows what his motivation is. But this sounds to me like a "transfer because I can" sort. Yes, his Coach left, but was replaced by an assistant. I don't see South Alabama as a step up. I presume he's got to sit a year. He'll have to learn new teammates, etc. If he stayed at WMU, he'd almost certainly crack their top 10 career scorers list, the top 5 with a good season, but I guess kids don't care about that kind of thing anymore. USA was good last year (20-11), but they're graduating their top 5 scorers and are still in a one bid conference that rates below the MAC--does he think this will get him to the NCAA? Of course, he could have all kinds of personal reasons. But I often wonder what advice these kids are getting.

Lobsinger payed an informal visit to UD a couple years back, but our staff never seemed much interested in him.

"I had no choice but to look elsewhere... inconsistent and unprofessional [communication] on Western's end causing certain schools to be forced to move on I then committed to the University of South Alabama... ."
Well, I'm sure South Alabama feels really wanted now. Hey, it was closing time and their weren't a lot of options...

He probably could have phrased part of that better, particularly as it relates to his current school. Remember the words to the song, "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with." If I am the coach at South Alabama, I am wondering if Mr. Flowers puts his name in the transfer portal this Spring.
I generally come down in favor of the student athlete in these disputes, but I'm also aware there are two sides to every story. I won't take Mr. Flowers word as gospel, but something unusual must have happened for him to get his waiver request denied, given the way the NCAA is handing out approvals this year. On one aspect, I will side with WMU; Flowers claims that once he put his name in the transfer portal, the program gave away his scholarship, and he takes issue with that. I can't blame them for that. Once a player tells you he is leaving (which is what you're saying when you put your name in the portal), a coach's responsibility is to his team. I know some coaches hold scholarships open and players return to their teams, but if I was coaching that isn't a chance I would be taking.

Western Michigan put out this statement on September 8, basically stating that the head coach asked Flowers about his plans about two weeks after he put his name in the portal, because they were still holding a scholarship for him. He stated he was still undecided. According to the statement, Flowers contacted an assistant coach the next day and said he would not be returning. It was after that they used "his" scholarship on a recruit.

Flowers had an excellent season for USA, averaging 21.0 ppg, 13th in the nation.
