Western Michigan gets a commitment from a JUCO player, Markhi Strickland. He's not a traditional JUCO player; he's the type that's becoming more common, a JUCO with previous D1 experience. Strickland was at St. Louis for two years, appearing in 21 games, scoring around 2 points per game. He spent last season at Victoria Junior College, putting up decent numbers, 14 and 6. He's listed at 6-5, 200. www.vcpirates.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/players/markhistricklandzjcy

Another new player is announced for WMU as grad transfer Anthony Crump commits. Crump is an Inkster native who previously played at Middle Tennessee State and Northern Illinois. He averaged 8 points and 5 boards for NIU last season, which was his best season. He hasn't sat out, so it would appear he needs a waiver to join his third school. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4397550/anthony-crump

Interesting pick up for WMU as 7-0/255 center Javonte Brown commits. Brown is a transfer from Texas A&M, who previously spent a year at Connecticut. He only played in two games in 2020-21 with UConn. He appeared in 31 games with the Aggies in year one, but only 7 games last season. He got in trouble in August 2022, when he was arrested for theft from Wal Mart. Showed some promise at infrequent times with A&M. Can't teach height. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4702024/javonte-brown

For whatever reason this makes me think of Reggie Harding. How much can you get away with if you are 7’.

The Broncos struggled in the first season of the Coach Stephens era, finishing at 8-23, 4-14 in conference. It had been observed prior to the season that the Broncos had brought in a group of talented freshman guards, and all three of them (Hubbard, Monnegro, and Hannah) each averaged around 20 minutes per game, gaining valuable experience. All of them showed potential and so far they are all coming back. Leaving via the portal is Markese Hastings, who averaged 8 points and 9 rebounds per game. WMU is like a lot of mid majors; trying to survive in this new college basketball world of NIL and free agency. The Bronco's showed significant improvement in year two of the Coach Stephens era, going from 8-23, 4-14 in 2022-23 to 12-20, 9-9 in 2023-24. After a 2-9 start, they went 10-10 the rest of the way. There are reasons to hope. Today, WMU received a commitment from 6-10 Junior Sileu, a native of Cameroon currently attending AZ Compass Prep. Raw, but had offers from Sam Houston State and Texas Rio Grand Valley.
