Word is that Milwaukee coach Lavall Jordan is a leading candidate for the top job at Butler. I think he's done a pretty decent job at Milwaukee, and certainly he's got the years as a Michigan assistant, but really--one 11-24 season with a last place finish hardly seems like the resume that would catch Barry Collier's eye. I don't think that he will get the job, but I can see why he is a candidate. I'm sure the fact that he played for Butler when the current AD was head coach, and that he also coached under Thad Matta, Brad Stevens, are playing in his favor. I think he'll stay at Milwaukee when Butler goes in a different direction, and I still think he is going to do well with the Panthers. Matta leaving Ohio State surprised me, particularly since it seems he was fired and did not resign for health reasons, as I originally thought. Hmmm. ESPN reporting that Butler and Jordan have reached an agreement in principle for him to take over as head coach. Guess I was wrong about that. I understand that Panthers fans will be disappointed, but I can understand the allure of coaching where you played.

Not to mention the step up from the Horizon to the Big East.

Tim Floyd resigned from his head coaching position at UTEP last night, immediately after a loss to Lamar. Says he is retiring from coaching. Phil Johnson takes over on an interim basis.

Here they come... the 2019 firings.
Troy leads the way, canning Phil Cunningham after a 12-18 season. The idiots at Coaching Changes immediately rip this move because "How do you fire a guy who went to the NCAA tournament 2 years ago at a school like Troy State?," conveniently forgetting that Cunningham had 5 losing seasons and three last place finishes in 6 years at Troy (including last this year), never finishing higher than 5th in the conference.
Also canned was Mercer Head Coach Bob Hoffman, after an 11-20 season. Hoffman had some success at Mercer, scoring a memorable victory over Duke in the 2014 NCAA tournament. But that was the only NCAA appearance in Hoffman's 11 years as head coach, and after winning 78 games from 2012 through 2014, his last 5 teams have a combined .500 record. A tougher call to be sure, but not unreasonable in a tough business.

Shaver had an overall losing record and Wm & Mary, mainly due to his first three seasons, when the Tribe was a combined 23-62. Then came 7 years with a 93-127 record. The Tribe then had 5 straight winning seasons until this year, including three 20-win seasons. Before Shaver took over, the Tribe had had 16 losing seasons in 18 years (one of the winning seasons was 14-13). Before Shaver, they had two 20-win seasons since 1951. They have never played in the NCAA. Between joining the CAA in 1986 and hiring Shaver before the 2004 season, they won 1 CAA regular season title. They won one under Shaver, in 2015. Wm. & Mary has been a tough job for a long time. Seems odd to can Shaver after one losing season, and not a horrible one (14-17) at that.

Meanwhile Nate Oates gets a 5-year extension at Buffalo. Remember how desperate Buffalo was to hold on to Bobby Hurley, and thought for sure they'd fade after he left? Oates has far surpassed what Hurley did there.

Reports:
Marvin Menzies out at UNLV. Ironically, this was his best season with the Rebels.
Billy Kennedy out at Texas A&M.

Reports: Marvin Menzies out at UNLV. Ironically, this was his best season with the Rebels. Billy Kennedy out at Texas A&M. I am surprised that UNLV hasn't been able to find a coach who is able to at least take them to the tournament every year. I've always wondered how close Andre Lefleur came to getting the UofD job last year.

I am surprised that UNLV hasn't been able to find a coach who is able to at least take them to the tournament every year. They did--Chris Beard--but he quit after a week to take the Texas Tech job. They got Menzies from New Mexico State. They could do a lot worse than look at NM St.'s current coach, Chris Jans.

Stony Brook Coach Jeff Boals is taking the head coach job at Ohio. Mike Dunleavy is out at Tulane. Saul Phillips (age 46) was 81-77 in 5 years at Ohio, after a successful run at North Dakota State. They won 23 games and played in the CBI his second year, 20 games his 3rd, but were 14-17 the last two seasons. Boals played at Ohio on the fine Larry Hunter teams from 1992-95, alongside Gary Trent. He succeeded Steve Pikiell, who was very successful at Stony Brook before going to Rutgers. Stony Brook averaged 24 wins a season in Pikiell's last 5 seasons. Under Boals, they went 18-14, 13-19, and this year 24-8. Tulane was 24-69 in three seasons under Dunleavy.
