Better late than never: Scores from January 2, 2018. (Still can't believe how quickly 2017 passed by.)
Only one HL game on the calendar. And the result was a surprise.
IUPUI 67, Green Bay 63. Maybe that game at IUPUI is going to be tougher than I thought it would be. All the more reason for the Titans to take care of business at home. We'll give the Jags the Mid Major win of the day for pulling the road upset.
Titan Opponents:
Michigan 75, Iowa 68. Michigan doesn't have one of their better teams of the JB era, but I think they will do well in this year's Big Ten. Western Michigan 87, Akron 75. Broncos are 9-5. Buffalo 104, Toledo 94. Our neighbors to the South fall to 8-6.
Top Twenty Five and Other Games of Interest: #5 Xavier 86, Butler 79. Good game from two of our old conference mates. #18 Texas Tech 85, #10 Kansas 73. Great win for the Red Raiders, who haven't beaten Kansas in forever. If you saw this game, you saw the difference between an experienced team lead by seniors and a talented, but immature younger group. Florida 83, #11 Texas A&M. Gators with the impressive road win. #16 TCU 81, Baylor 78. Maybe I overestimated the difficulty of Big 12 teams winning on the road... #22 Arkansas 75, Mississippi State 78. Good win for the Bulldogs, where former Titan coach Ernie Z is still on staff. Auburn 94, #23 Tennessee 84. Another top 25 upset at home. Wisconsin 71, Indiana 61. When was the last time both of these teams failed to make the NCAA tournament? Ball State 72, EMU 62. EMU takes the loss in Muncie. CMU 75, Ohio 50. Central looks pretty good. Vermont 62, Harvard 56. Harvard still trying to figure it out. Louisville 77, Pittsburgh 51. Former Vandy coach Kevin Stallings is feeling the pressure in Pitt, and got into a shouting contest with Cardinal fans. Not a good look. Nebraska 70, Northwestern 55. NW proving to be one of the most wildly overrated teams in the preseason. I saw them ranked as high as 15 in the nation. Georgetown 90, DePaul 81. Two of my favorite teams of the 80s mix it up in 2018. I'm old.

Top Twenty Five and Other Games of Interest:
Ohio State 80 #1 Michigan State 64. Al McGuire used to say that the home court advantage in college basketball was so big there were no upsets on the road. I tend to agree, so the Buckeyes win wasn't that shocking to me. They've won eight in a row. #4 Arizona State 80 Utah 77. Excellent game, went right down to the end. #9 Wichita State 95 South Florida 57 #15 Miami 80 #24 Florida State 77. Miami takes round one of the ACC battle for Florida. #19 Cincinnati 76 SMU 56. Scores from January 9, 2018.
Full night of college basketball, with a lot of interesting outcomes. No HL action, however.
Titan Opponents: #9 Purdue 70 Michigan 69. UM fans are upset about the officiating at the end, but both the official review of an out of bounds play and a late foul call on Michigan looked like the right calls to me. Michigan is 14-4, 2-3. Rhode Island 72 St. Louis 65. SLU falls under .500. Toledo 84 Western Michigan 61. The Rockets home win leaves both teams 10-6, 2-1.
Top 25 and Other Games of Interest: #2 West Virginia 57 Baylor 54. Baylor gave it a good shot at WVU. #3 Virginia 68 Syracuse 61 #9 Oklahoma 75 #8 Texas Tech 65. The Sooners have played four top ten teams this year. They have beaten three of them and have a win over at the time 25th ranked USC. Oklahoma was 11-20 last season. #12 Kansas 83 Iowa State 78. Marquette 84 #13 Seton Hall 64. A big time butt kicking of a good team. Great win for Marquette. #20 North Carolina 96 Boston College 66. I knew somebody was going to pay for that recent Tar Heel loss. #21 Kentucky 74 Texas A&M 73. T A&M started the season blowing out West Virginia but they are now 0-4 in the SEC. #22 Auburn 85 Ole Miss 70. Auburn was down ten at the half. #24 Tennessee 92 Vanderbilt 84. The Commodores (not Lionel Richie's Commodores) are 6-10, 1-3 under our old friend #25 Creighton 85 Butler 74. Georgetown 69 St. John's 66. At Madison Square Garden, just like the glory years. Memphis 96 Tulane 89. Tigers are 11-6, 2-2. Eastern Michigan 79 Central Michigan 74. I was in attendance at the Convocation Center for this good home win for EMU against a good Central team. Kid from my high school got 15 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles, who are now 10-6. The Chips fall to 12-4. VCU 78 Duquesne 67. New Haven's Eric Williams Jr. had 15 and 5 for the Duquesne. Titan Opponents:
Virginia Tech 83 Wake Forrest 75. The Hokies are 13-4.

Scores from January 16, 2018. Our Titans were in the only HL game scheduled.
IUPUI 81 Detroit 66. In a season of disappointments, put this loss near the top of the list. Detroit was riding a two game losing streak and on the road to play the team picked to finish last in the HL. Incredibly, the IUPUI Jags jumped on the Titans from the start and led by 19 at the half. Detroit put on a second half run and cut the lead to 5, but were outscored 14 to 4 the rest of the way. JJ Jr. played well, as did Josh, but they were pretty much the only ones. The normally poor shooting Jags shot 52% overall, 48% from three. The Titans free throw defense was strong again, however, as the Jags hit just 58% from the line. The Titans are 6-14, 2-5. IUPUI is 7-11 and a surprising 4-3 in HL play.
Top Twenty Five:
#3 Purdue 78 Wisconsin 50. No post season for the Badgers this year. First time in awhile. Kansas State 87 #4 Oklahoma 69. Big win for the Wildcats. Won't hurt the Sooners too bad, though. #12 Cincinnati 49 UCF 38. Apparently Cincy heard me wonder who was the best defensive team between them, WVU and Virginia and decided to make their case. #15 North Carolina 87 # 20 Clemson 79. South Carolina 76 #18 Kentucky 68. The Cats are young and taking time to gel.
Titan Opponents: Toledo 91 Ohio 67. The Rockets are 12-6, 4-1 in the MAC. Going to circle the date the Rockets travel to EMU. Moose, that date is February 20 at 7:00 PM Open date for the Titans. Kent State 73 Western Michigan 71. Detroiter Josh Davis with 16 for the Broncos. Detroit native Jaylin Walker with 10 for KSU.
Games of Interest: Memphis 73 UConn 49. Tubby Smith's team wins it's fourth straight conference game. Louisville 82 Notre Dame 78. Denny Crum versus Digger Phelps. Georgia 61 LSU 60. Pontiac's Yante Maten with 21 and 12 for UGA. Miss State 80 Vanderbilt 62. On the night we lost to IUPUI, I remember #15 Mississippi State traveling to Calihan a few years ago and escaping with a 5 point win that was closer than that. Eastern Michigan 63 Akron 49. The Eagles win their second in a row. Ball State 82 Central Michigan 76. Buffalo 95 Northern Illinois 67. Milan's Nick Perkins, who officially visited the Titans as a recruit, had 26 points and 6 rebounds. Syracuse 59 Pittsburgh 45. Pittsburgh 0-6 in the ACC. Texas A&M 71 Ole Miss 69.
