Other Games: #6 Cincinnati 76, SMU 51. The Bearkats (23-2) led 62-27 before taking their paws off the gas. #9 Duke 80, Georgia Tech 69.

Monday, February 12. Quiet Night:
Non-Conference Opponents: UNC-Greensboro 74, East Tennessee State 56. The nation's longest winning streak is snapped for the third time in 3 days -- first Virginia, then St. Mary's, now ETSU. Greensboro 20-6 closes to within a game of ETSU (22-5) by handing the latter its first Southern Conference loss.
Other Games: #14 North Carolina 83, Notre Dame 66. #20 West Virginia 82, TCU 66.
Baylor 74, Texas 73 (2OT). Texas (15-11) is one of the 15 youngest teams in D-I. Canisius 81, Fairfield 63. Two old Titan rivals from Dick Vitale days. Canisius (18-9) has won 18 or more in 5 of the last 6 seasons. Siena 82, Iona 78 (OT). Iona's string of 8 consecutive twenty win seasons is in danger. The Gaels are 16-10.

Tuesday, February 13:
Non-Conference Opponents: Bowling Green 83, Western Michigan 81. Western (15-11) led for all but a few seconds early and a few seconds late, but the latter is what counts. Bowling Green (16-10) came back from a 15 point deficit and won it when Western star Thomas Wilder fouled Antwon Lillard on a three point attempt with 4 seconds to play. Lillard hit all three foul shots for the win. Detroiter Justin Turner led Bowling Green with 29 points.
Toledo 82, Ohio 74. The Rockets (19-7) have won 11 of 12.
Other Games: #2 Michigan State 87, Minnesota 57. 27 points for Jaren Jackson as MSU (25-3) wins. Central Michigan 80, Northern Illinois 72. Eastern Michigan 58, Miami (Oh.) 57. James Thompson (14 points, 14 rebounds) recorded his 18th double-double as EMU (15-11) blew almost all of a 17 point lead but held on and nipped Miami.
#1 Virginia 59, Miami 50. In it's first game as #1 since Ralph Sampson days, Virginia (24-2) led coast to coast against a good Miami (18-7) team. #7 Texas Tech 88, #23 Oklahoma 78. #13 Kansas 83, Iowa State 77. #16 Rhode Island 85, Richmond 67. #18 Tennessee 70, South Carolina 67. Missouri 62, #21 Texas A&M 58.
Georgetown 87, Butler 83.

Wednesday, Feb. 14:
Horizon Cleveland State 75, Detroit 72. Nice games for Prince and Long. But Corey and Josh were MIA tonight, shooting a combined 2-15, 1-10 from three. We are a very bad team, and I see little reason to think we won't be quite bad next year, too.
Youngstown State 75, Oakland 73. As others have reported. Misery loves company.
Non-Con Opponents: #22 Michigan 74, Iowa 59. UM was dominant tonight. #12 Duke 74, Virginia Tech 52. Tech (18-8) comes down quickly from their upset of Virginia. Fort Wayne 90, Western Illinois 74. The Wayners are 17-12. Houston Baptist 77, Northwestern St. 70. Cornerstone 101, UM-Dearborn 70. Cornerstone is ranked #1 in NAIA. Could we beat them? Aquinas 70, Siena Heights 62. Siena could have used Spencer Haywood tonight.
Other Games of Some Interest Providence 76, #3 Villanova 71. The Friars (17-9) rejuvenate their at-large hopes. #5 Xavier 102, Seton Hall 90. Cincinnati boasts two of the nation's top 6 teams. #10 Auburn 76, Kentucky 66. Florida State 81, #11 Clemson 79 (OT). FSU rallied from 18 down in the second half. #24 Nevada 77, Boise State 72.
Loyola 80, Valparaiso 71. Hot Horizon League action! Loyola (22-5) leads its conference by 2 games with 3 to play. Your encouraging news: Head Coach Porter Moser was 32-61 in his first 3 seasons at Loyola. George Mason 85, Dayton 67. Dayton (11-14) is looking at its first losing season since 2006. The Flyers have averaged over 23 wins a season in that time, including 102 wins in the last 4 years. Stephen F. Austin 87, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 68. SFA is 21-5.

Those of you how have Facebook are probably familiar with the "Memories" feature where Facebook reminds you of posts you made on the current date in year's past. A couple of days ago the system highlighted a post I made in 2013 when I was celebrating taking my nephew to Calihan Hall to see the Titans beat Cleveland State 92-62. It really hit home how far we have fallen in a short period of time. I'm struggling to find reasons for optimism for next season. I expect BA to be back and hopefully he will be better due to experience, but there are certainly questions about who will be on the roster and how successful the recruits will be.

I'm going to forgive you for overlooking Memphis beating SMU 70-67. ;-) Interesting thing about that game: Memphis played without their top scorer/best player, and won on the road at SMU for the first time in five years. Memphis only had one guy see action who played D1 ball last year, forward Jimario Rivers (former JUCO in his second year of D1 ball). Rivers had a bad game and went scoreless, meaning all of the Memphis points were scored by guys not only in their first year of the system but in their first year of D1 basketball. In the interest of full disclosure, SMU also played without their top scorer, but were still a seven point favorite with a much more experienced team. With good coaching, you can win some games you aren't supposed to win.

Thursday, Feb. 15:
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: UCLA 75, Oregon State 68. Thomas Welsh had 15 points and 17 rebounds for the Bruins (18-8). Murray State 68, Jacksonville State 60. Jonathan Stark had 32 for Murray (21-5). Seattle 85, UT-Rio Grande Valley 68. Seattle is now 18-9.
Other Games Houston 67, #5 Cincinnati 62. Houston (20-5) was looking good for the NCAA, but this win really gives them some breathing room. Wisconsin 57, #6 Purdue 53. Big upset in the Big 10. Purdue (23-5), losers of 3 straight, may have peaked a month early. Penn State 79, #8 Ohio State 56. Penn State (19-9) is the only B10 team to beat OSU (22-6), and they've done it twice. #9 Gonzaga 76, Loyola Marymount 46. San Francisco 70, #15 St. Mary's 63. St. Mary's loss pretty much guarantees Gonzaga a share of the WCC regular season title for the 19th time in 21 years. #17 Arizona 77, #25 Arizona State 70. Good game between ranked, in-state rivals. #19 Wichita State 93, Temple 86.
Tulsa 73, UConn 71. UConn (12-14) could have back-to-back losing seasons for the the first time since Jim Calhoun's first year as Coach in 1987.
Utah Valley 86, New Mexico State 79. Utah Valley (18-8) prevents NM State (22-4) from clinching the WAC regular season title. Chris Jans is in his first season as the coach at New Mexico State. You may recall he was an assistant to Gregg Marshall at Wichita State, went to Bowling Green as HC a few years ago and won 20 games his first season but was fired after the season for an off-court incident in a bar. He's one helluva coach, and despite tonight's loss, he's taking advantage of this second opportunity.

Saturday, February 17:
Non-Conference Opponents: Northern Illinois 75, Western Michigan 67. WMU drops to 15-12. UCLA 86, Oregon 78 (OT). Aaron Holiday led the Bruins (19-8) with 29 points. Virginia Tech 76, Georgia Tech 56. The Hokies are 19-8. With a #57 RPI, I don't think they're quite in the field, yet. St Louis 72, Richmond 66. St. Louis is 15-12 and has won 5 of 6.
East Tennessee State 72, Western Carolina 61. ETSU is 23-5. Murray State 75, Tennessee Tech 65. Jonathan Stark had 30 for Murray State (22-5). He's got 117 points in his last 4 games. Ball State 99, Toledo 71. Toledo (19-8) is 11-2 in its last 13 games, with both losses to Ball State (18-9).
Fort Wayne 84, North Dakota State 72. Fort Wayne is 18-12. Seattle 73, New Mexico State 63 (OT). Seattle is 19-9 after upsetting the Aggies (22-5).
Sam Houston State 86, Houston Baptist 78. Baptist (6-21) is our only D-I non-conference opponents below .500. Madonna 72, Siena Heights 67. Siena Heights finishes the season 12-16.
Other Games of Interest: Eastern Michigan 72, Central Michigan 67. James Thompson had 22 points and 14 rebounds, his 19th double-double this year for EMU (16-11). #2 Michigan State 65, Northwestern 60. It's been a disappointing season for Northwestern, but maybe, just maybe, a win over MSU could still move them toward an NCAA bid. The Wildcats (15-13) jumped out to a 43-16 lead with about 4 minutes left in the first half. From there on it was all MSU, including a 38-11 second half. The Spartans (26-3) have won 10 straight.
#3 Villanova 95, #4 Xavier 79. Nova thrashes the Musketeers in Cincy. This may have been a battle for a #1 seed next month. Baylor 59, #7 Texas Tech 57. Baylor (17-7) still trying to punch a dance card. #9 Gonzaga 81, Pepperdine 67. South Carolina 84, #10 Auburn 75. The Auburn express takes a pause. #13 Kansas 77, #20 West Virginia 69. Kansas (21-6) moves into a tie for first with Texas Tech in the Big 12. The Jayhawks have won or shared 13 straight Big 12 regular season titles.
#14 North Carolina 93, Louisville 76. #15 St. Mary's 73, Portland 61. Jock Landale had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Gaels ((25-4). Georgia 73, #18 Tennessee 62. Arkansas 94, #21 Texas A&M 75. Texas 77, #23 Oklahoma 66. Oklahoma's collapse continues--they've lost 5 straight. #24 Nevada 93, Utah State 87.
Valparaiso 77, Bradley 64. Valpo (14-15) outscored the Braves (18-11) 21-4 over the final five minutes. Marquette 90, Creighton 86. Butler 69, Providence 54. Kentucky 81, Alabama 71. I listed this game because you rarely see Kentucky take to the court unranked. Notre Dame 84, BC 67. Old Dominion 82, UTEP 33. Not a misprint.

Junior guard Jeremiah Martin returned from injury and scored 22 points for Memphis. Next up for Memphis is a very tough game against Houston. (Don't you dare include the next game Memphis loses in the scoreboard.)

Sunday, February 18:
Non-conference Opponents: #22 Michigan 74, #8 Ohio State 62. Ohio State (22-7) has been an overachiever this year, but may have peaked too early. They fall a game behind MSU in the Big 14 standings. Michigan is 22-7.
Other Games: #19 Wichita State 76, #5 Cincinnati 72. The Bearcats (23-4) have lost 2 straight after a 16 game win streak. They are still a game ahead of Wichita (21-5) and Houston in the American Conference. #6 Purdue 76, Penn State 73. Purdue (24-5) halts a 3 game losing streak. #12 Duke 66, #11 Clemson 57.
Loyola 76, Evansville 66. Loyola (23-5) clinches at least a share of the MVC regular season title. This is Loyola's best mark since Alfredrick Hughes led the nation in scoring in 1984. Hartford 69, Vermont 68. Vermont's 15 game win streak (best in nation) ends. The Catamounts are 22-6.

Monday, February 19:
Horizon: On a quiet night in college hoops, the Horizon was busy, indeed:
UIC 94, Detroit 87. Corey Allen has not played 30 minutes in a game since January 12, when he scored 34 against YSU. When playing over 30 minutes, Corey has averaged 19.3 points per game. Of course, obviously, you play more when you're playing well. But it seems to me that we are letting a tremendous talent go to waste.
IUPUI 74, Oakland 67. Oakland's season continues to crumble.
Wright State 72, Cleveland State 63. Northern Kentucky 70, Youngstown State 51.
Things are set up for the final weekend of the regular season. Wright State and Northern Kentucky are tied atop the league at 13-3, and UIC is 12-4. WSU and NKU play this weekend at UIC.
Other Games: #8 Kansas 104, Oklahoma 74. Six straight losses for Oklahoma (16-11).
Wisconsin 73, Minnesota 63 (OT). Maryland 71, Northwestern 64. Minnesota (14-15) and Northwestern (15-14) opened the year ranked 15th and 19th, respectively, in the AP poll
Miami 77, Notre Dame 74.
Memphis was idle.

February 20:
Non-Conference Opponents: Western Michigan 83, Central Michigan 81 (OT). Thomas Wilder scored 11 points in the OT, including a game winning three point play in the final seconds. Wilder finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists. Both teams are 16-12.
Eastern Michigan 85, Toledo 79. The Rockets (19-9) still sit atop the MAC West despite back-to-back losses. EMU is 17-11. Dayton 53, St. Louis 50. Saint Louis is 15-13, Dayton 13-14. Citadel 84, East Tennessee State 82. A big upset for the Citadel (10-18) on ETSU's home floor. ETSU is 23-6 and still atop the Southern Conference.
Other Games: #2 Michigan State 81, Illinois 61. The Spartans (27-3) clinch at least a tie for the Big 10 title.
#16 Ohio State 79, Rutgers 52. #18 Rhode Island 95, La Salle 93 (OT). Rhode Island (22-4) guaranteed themselves a share of the Atlantic 10 title with an OT win in Philly. #21 West Virginia 71, Baylor 60.
Northern Iowa 68, Valparaiso 63. It's sad, I know, but I find some pleasure in Oakland's disappointing season and Valpo's position in the MVC basement. The Crusaders are 14-16 overall, thanks to a creampuff non-conference schedule.
Mississippi State 93, Texas A&M 81. A&M started the season 11-1, with a 3 point loss to Arizona and blowout wins over West Virginia, Oklahoma, and USC. They're 6-10 since that start. Ole Mississippi State is 20-8.
Butler 93, Creighton 70. Each team has 19 wins. Akron 81, Bowling Green 79
Memphis was idle.

Tech committed just 5 turnovers and advanced to 20-8 on the season. Lamar 87, Houston Baptist 63. Baptist is 6-22. Indiana Tech 89, Siena Heights 69. The Saints finish 12-17 after losing in the first round of the WHAC conference to Indiana Tech, which is ranked #3 in NAIA. UM-Dearborn 80, Madonna 78. UM-D is 19-12 with a first round WHAC tournament win.
Other Games: #1 Virginia 65, Georgia Tech 54. #3 Villanova 93, DePaul 62. #4 Xavier 89, Georgetown 77. #5 Duke 82, Louisville 56. Loyola 75, Southern Illinois 56. Loyola (24-5) captures its first MVC title with a convincing win over second place SIU. St. Bonaventure 73, Duquesne 67. That's 9 wins in a row for the Bonnies (21-6). Canisius 95, Niagara 88. Bucknell 85, Navy 61. Bucknell (21-9) has clinched the Patriot League regular season.

Thursday, Feb. 22:
Horizon: Milwaukee A lot, Detroit A little. Well, the Titans clinch the #10 seed in the HL tournament. Once again the Titans didn't come ready to play. Isn't inspiration supposed to be Bacari's strength? Yet game after game, we come out and ... are not ready, and fall way behind early. We put on a shooting clinic tonight, we just didn't have enough doctors to hand out medication everyone. 28.6% from the floor, 19% from three. All before an enthusiastic crowd of 17.
But what's worse is that this doesn't seem unusual. What a depressing season. It's said we can't afford to fire the coach, but I'm not sure we can afford not to. Maybe we appeal to Bacari to walk away, for the sake of the old alma mater. Maybe we just make Dre Black the coach next season at $37,000/yr. He's not the greatest player but he seems to have at least some basketball smarts, and knows the players. That's how Lloyd Brazil was hired 88 years ago.
Green Bay 96, Oakland 90. If Milwaukee beats Oakland on Saturday they'll steal the 4th seed from the Grizzleyneers. In absolute terms, the Grizz have done quite a bit better than the Titans this year, but in the expectation game, perhaps not. Their board tonight reads more or less like ours. Worth visiting if that kind of thing cheers you up. By the way, Sandy Cohen had a great game for Green Bay tonight, with 36 points on 10-17 from the floor and 12 of 13 from the line, plus 11 rebounds and 5 assists. That cancelled out 39 points from Kendrick Nunn.
Non-Conference Opponents: Utah 89, UCLA 78. The Bruins drop to 19-9. Murray State 76, Eastern Illinois 66. Murray State (23-5) won its 10th straight and moved ahead of Belmont into sole possession of 1st in the OVC. Grand Canyon 76, Seattle 64. Seattle is 19-10, and Grand Canyon 18-10.
Other: #6 Gonzaga 77, San Diego 72. Tough game for the Zags. #9 Purdue 93, Illinois 86. #11 Cincinnati 77, UConn 52. UConn (14-16) is looking at back-to-back losing seasons for the first time in over 30 years. #14 Arizona 75, Oregon State 65 (OT). Like punched-out fighters, these two teams staggered down the stretch tonight. Leading by two with over 9 minutes left, Oregon State (13-14) didn't make another field goal in regulation, yet was still ahead until Rawle Alkins tied it for Arizona by hitting a pair free throws with 14 seconds left. Arizona (22-6) found a second win in the OT and won going away.
#22 St. Mary's 75, Pepperdine 61. Memphis 91, #23 Houston 85. Houston (21-6) was ranked this week for the first time since the 2005-06 season, and its highest ranking since their back-to-back championship game appearances in 1983 and 1984. So they immediately lost to Tubby Smith's Memphis team. At least one Titan fan has something hoops-related to be pleased with tonight.
South Dakota State 76, South Dakota 72. The Jackrabbits (24-6) clinched the Summit League title with the win over the second place Coyotes (24-7). UNC-Ashville 89, Winthrop 75. These two entered the game tied for first in the Big South Conference.
