Scores from January 19, 2018. Only seven games nationally tonight.

The Rest:
#9 Michigan State 85 Indiana 57. I knew somebody was going to pay the price for those two recent MSU losses. Turns out it was the Hoosiers. The Spartans got 22 points from Miles Bridges and another double double from Nick Ward. Cassius Winston had ten points, eight assists, and only one turnover. Wisconsin 75 Illinois 50. Illinois is 0-7 in conference play. Canisius 68 Manhattan 59 Iona 76 Monmouth 73 Davidson 83 St. Bonaventure 73 Brown 81 Yale 80. Game of the night, a back and forth battle until the end. Scores from January 20, 2018. Packed schedule today, with lots of great match ups.
Horizon League Action:
Detroit 86 Oakland 92. Detroit trailed by 21 at the half, and despite a late and futile rally, you never got the feeling that the Titans were going to win. Just an ugly performance. Oakland is a team that has lost three conference games already, so they are beatable, so I take no comfort in the late rally. OU is 5-3 in conference. Detroit is 2-6. Northern Kentucky 77 Green Bay 65. NKU moves to 7-1 to at least stay in second place while GB falls to 3-7. UIC 87 Cleveland State 80. Nice road win for the Flames who only got a combined two field goals from Dixson and Ottey. IUPUI 62 Youngstown State 85. Penguins move to 4-4 as the Jags drop to 4-5. Wright State 61 Milwaukee 66. The Panthers get the home win and the Raiders fall into a tie with NKU.
Titan Opponents: Florida State 91 Virginia Tech 82. The 'Noles with a good road win as the Hokies fall to 13-6, 2-4. Seattle 79 UT-RGV 76 East Tennessee State 66 Western Carolina 50 Toledo 72 Kent State 65 Murray State 76 Tennessee State 57 Oregon 94 UCLA 91 Fort Wayne 92 North Dakota State 88. Fort Wayne is 14-9, 3-3. St. Louis 66 UMass 47. SLU is 10-10.

St. John's was up five in the first OT. In the end, Patrick Ewing beat Chris Mullins again. VCU 87 George Washington 73. 18 and 9 for Detroiter Justin Tillman. Ohio 72 EMU 66. Louisville 77 Boston College 69. The Ville is 5-1 in the ACC in the midst of a major scandal. Utah 82 Washington State 69 Manhattan 68 St. Peter's 57 Canisius 84 Iona 82. Big game in the early season MAAC standings. Vermont 76 Hartford 63 Southern Illinois 64 Northern Iowa 53. Victory for the Salukis. Scores from January 28, 2018. Another blowout loss for the Titans took a lot of the enjoyment out of a good slate of college basketball games.
HL: Northern Kentucky 72 Detroit 44. The best thing you can say about this game is that it didn't end up being another 30 point blowout. Both teams struggled to get the offense going early. The Norse got rolling late in the first half, but the Titans never did. Detroit hit just 28% from the floor for the game, with only Corey Allen scoring in double figures. NKU didn't shoot the lights out, but today they didn't have to. Oh, yeah, and JJ Jr. left early in the game and didn't return. The Titans fall to 6-17, 2-8, while the Norse improve to 15-7, 8-2.
Wright State 64 Oakland 51. The Grizz had an opportunity to tighten up the race at the top of the HL, but came up short in Dayton. What's really surprising to me is that OU only scored 51 points. They actually shot worse from the three point line today than Detroit did.
Top Twenty Five and Other Games of Interest: #1 Villanova 85 Marquette 82. Nova held off a strong challenge from Marquette. #3 Purdue 74 Indiana 67. The Boilermakers are 10-0 in the Big Fourteen. #6 Michigan State 74 Maryland 68. The Spartans overcame a 13 point half time deficit. #17 Wichita State 90 Tulsa 71 #18 Clemson 72 Georgia Tech 70
Seton Hall 86 DePaul 70 Loyola Chicago 70 Northern Iowa 47. This score would have been unbelievable in the not to distant past. Temple 85 UConn 57 USC 77 California 59

Scores from January 29, 2018. Light schedule tonight.
HL: UIC 77 Milwaukee 56. After a really rough start to the season, the Flames are 7-3 in the HL. Milwaukee's three game winning streak comes to an end.
Titan Opponents: East Tennessee State 73 The Citadel 71. ETSU is 10-0 in conference. #24 Michigan 58 Northwestern 47. The Wildcats are having a very disappointing season. Michigan is 18-6, 7-4 in conference.
Top Twenty Five and Other Games of Interest: #4 Duke 88 Notre Dame 66 #7 Kansas 70 Kansas State 56. KU in its normal spot at the top of the Big 12.
Nebraska 74 Wisconsin 63. The Huskers trailed by 11 before winning by 11. Nebraska isn't a very good team, but in this year's Big Ten they are 8-4 in conference and on a three game winning streak. Wofford 77 Western Carolina 68 Iona 103 Fairfield 100 in overtime. Game of the day. Rider 92 Monmouth 85 Hampton 80 Bethune-Cookman 69 Lehigh 71 Holy Cross 67 Texas Southern 97 Alabama State 82. TSU is 6-3 in conference and probably would be better had they not lost last year's leading scorer to the grad transfer rule. Grambling 92 Mississippi Valley State 89. Charlie Joiner's school over Jerry Rice's school.

Scores from January 31, 2018. Nice night of hoop action to end the month.
HL: No HL teams in action.
Titan Opponents: St. Louis 70 St. Joseph's 69. SLU is 12-11. Stephen F. Austin 102 Houston Baptist 82. HBU falls to 5-18, 1-9. Virginia Tech 85 Boston College 80. The Hokies are 16-6, 5-4.
Top Twenty Five and Other Games of Interest: #Virginia 74 Louisville 64 # 3 Purdue 75 Maryland 67. Purdue's winning streak is 18 games.
#6 Michigan State 76 Penn State 68. The Spartans trailed by 12 in the second half before exploding. Notable stat: Miles Bridges shot 69% from the free throw line last season. This year, he's hitting an incredible 91% from the line. Kudos to that young man. Other notable stat: He's not leading the team in free throw percentage because Cassius Winston is hitting 93% from the line, up from last year's 78%.
#8 Cincinnati 80 Houston 70 # Arizona 78 Washington State 72 #10 Texas Tech 73 Texas 71. Great game with a buzzer beater to win it for Keenan Evans. Iowa State 93 #15 West Virginia 77. WVU's defense lets them down. #18 Tennessee 84 LSU 61. Rick Barnes doing a nice job at UT. Memphis 86 USF 74. Memphis is 14-8. Miami 69 Pittsburgh 57. Pitt is 0-10 in the ACC. Jerome Lane ain't walking through that door, dragging a shattered backboard. (Did I already use Jerome Lane?) Seton Hall 73 Providence 57. Duquesne 75 George Washington 73. Eric Williams with 11 points and a key free throw make late. Wake Forest 76 Florida State 72. FSU missed a chance to get a conference road win. Georgia Tech 55 Syracuse 51 Valpo 69 Indiana State 63 Bradley 69 Loyola Chicago 67 Evansville 57 Northern Iowa 49 Missouri 69 Alabama 60 Mississippi State 81 South Carolina 76 Butler 92 Marquette 72. Very impressive win for the Bulldogs and Coach Jordan. UNLV 76 San Jose State 67.

Scores from February 1, 2018. Including a surprising HL result.
HL: Cleveland State 77 Wright State 74. The Vikings defend home court with a close win over the first place team. Detroit's Kenny Carpenter had 14 points. Northern Kentucky 95 Youngstown State 85. The Penguins played a good first half and led by three at the break. Ypsilanti Lincoln's Devin Haygood had 11 for YSU.
Titan Opponents: ETSU 96 Samford 76 Fort Wayne 85 Oral Roberts Murray State 87 Southeast Missouri State 75
Other Games of Interest: #1 Nova 98 Creighton 78. Nova looks GOOD. Temple 81 #16 Wichita State 79. The Shockers have lost 3 of their last 5. This ain't the Missouri Valley Conference. Washington 68 #25 Arizona State 64. ASU just gave Coach Hurley an extension to 2026. But the Sun Devils are 4-6 in a bad PAC 12 this year. Tulsa 76 SMU 67 Northwestern 60 Wisconsin 52 Georgia State 77 Arkansas State 66. Eight wins in a row for GSU. Oregon 66 Cal 53 Stanford 80 Oregon State 71

Scores from February 2, 2018. In the HL, there was good news for the Titans, and UIC tries to prove they are legit.
HL: Detroit 74 IUPUI 60. The Titans jumped ahead early and kept the lead. Yeah, the Jags aren't a good team, but the Titans broke a losing streak and got a home victory with a depleted roster. We'll take it. Milwaukee 76 Green Bay 58. The Panthers get to .500 overall and nab their sixth conference win. Signs of hope from their first year coach. UIC 79 Oakland 73. Wouldn't have thought that UIC could beat OU at OU with Dikembe Dixson scoring zero points. Kendrick Nunn shot 3-22 from the floor for the Grizzlies.
Titan Opponents: Buffalo 92 Western Michigan 86. Broncos are 13-10.
Other Games of Interest: #22 Rhode Island 81 VCU 68. Pershing's Justin Tillman had 22 and 6 for VCU. Pennsylvania 90 Brown 85. Penn is 4-0 in the Ivy. Columbia 83 Harvard 76. Bad loss for Tommy Amaker and Harvard. Princeton 76 Yale 73 Colorado 67 Utah 55. The PAC 12 is pretty yucky this year. Iona 87 Quinnipiac 82 in double overtime. Game of the night.

The Jayhawks are not invincible this year, even at home. #8 Cincinnati 65 UConn 57 Washington 78 #9 Arizona 75 #10 Texas Tech 83 TCU 71. Excellent win for the Red Raiders on the road. #11 Auburn 93 Vanderbilt 81 Texas 79 #12 Oklahoma 74. Scores from February 4, 2018. Relatively light schedule on Super Bowl Sunday.
HL: UIC 78 Detroit 69. Josh had a career high 30 points, but the Titans couldn't come up with enough offense or defense to win this game. Detroit shot an abysmal 4-27 from three. Oakland 82 IUPUI 74. OU righted their ship, at least for today, and stayed above .500 in HL play.

Saturday, February 10:
Horizon:
Youngstown State 84, IUPUI 80. Cameron Morse, who's had a very disappointing senior year, had a season high 28 in the road win. His previous high this year was 26. Last year, Morse had 8 games with more than 28 points, and another 4 with 27.
Milwaukee 74, Wright State 73. Milwaukee led by 17 with just over 5 minutes to play, then held off a furious Raider rally. Grant Benzinger missed a jumper at the buzzer that would have given WSU the win. Northern Kentucky 86, Green Bay 80. Northern Kentucky takes a 1 game lead over WSU. The two will square off in Dayton on Friday for 1st place.
Cleveland State 86, UIC 78. A big road upset for CSU. The loss drops UIC 2 games behind NKU for first. And CSU's win drops the Titans into sole possession of last place in the conference. Freshman Tyree Appleby had 25 points and 9 rebounds for the Vikings.
Non-Conference Opponents: Western Michigan 69, Ohio 60. Virginia Tech 61, #2 Virginia 60 (OT). Tech (18-7) scored the last 5 points in the OT to nip Virginia (23-2). The loss snapped the Cavaliers' 15 game winning streak and a chance to move to #1 in the polls. Arizona State 88, UCLA 79. Big blow to UCLA's PAC 12 title hopes. They trail Arizona by 2 games. St Louis 70, La Salle 62. St. Louis is 14-12. East Tennessee State 70, VMI 56. ETSU (22-4 overall) stays unbeaten (13-0) in the Southern. With Virginia and St. Mary's losing, the Bucs have the nation's longest winning streak. Murray State 75, SIU-Edwardsville 66. The Racers (20-5) sit atop the OVC. Omaha 90, Fort Wayne 85. Seattle 91, Chicago State 81. Seattle (17-9) has been quite a better than I thought they would be, though losing by 30 is still inexcusable. Chicago State is looking for a new president, if anyone is interested. Nichols State 94, Houston Baptist 67. Whaddya think? Could the Titans beat Nichols State? UM-Dearborn 67, Madonna 63. Checking in on our NAIA opponents, we find UM-D at 18-11. Rochester 59, Siena Heights 54. Siena Heights is 12-14, but the Saints gained a spot in the Titan record books this year.
Other Games: #4 Michigan State 68, #3 Purdue 65. State (24-3) trailed most of the day, but Miles Bridges delivered a game winning three in the final seconds. Purdue (23-4) loses its second straight after 19 consecutive wins. Akron 69, Central Michigan 63. Bowling Green 70, Eastern Michigan 63 (OT). EMU (14-11) blew a big early lead.
#1 Villanova 86, Butler 75. #5 Xavier 72, Creighton 71. Quentin Goodwin made two free throws with 1 second left as Xavier (23-3) won on the road.
#7 Texas Tech 66, Kansas State 47. I suggested 2 years ago that if Ray were canned, we should try to land Chris Beard. "No, no," came the near unanimous reply. "He's not committed to Detroit." "He moves around too much." "We'd only have him for a couple years." Moot point--we almost certainly wouldn't have landed him anyway.. But in two years he's moved Texas Tech to a 20-4 record and their highest ranking ever. I fully expect Bacari back next year. But if he can't turn things around, I do hope next time we go into the market we look for a young but proven winner--someone like Chris Beard, who has won everywhere he's gone. He won as head coach at Fort Scott CC, at Seminole JC, in the ABA, at McMurray University, at Angelo State, and at Arkansas-Little Rock. He's still just 44 years old. Would a guy like that move on after just a couple years? Who cares?
#8 Auburn 78, Georgia 61. Tigers (22-3 and 3 games up on Kentucky in the SEC) are arguably the biggest surprise of the year in NCAA hoops. Baylor 80, #10 Kansas 64. #12 Gonzaga 78, #11 St. Mary's 65. Every time I watch Gonzaga, I remember us beating them in 1999 and think, "why not us?" #13 Arizona 81, USC 67. #14 Ohio State 82, Iowa 64. Who is atop the Big 10? Why, 22-5 Ohio State, of course. Alabama 78, #15 Tennessee 50. Quite the dismantling by the Tide. Iowa State 88, #17 Oklahoma 80. Freshman Cameron Lard had 19 points and 17 rebounds for the Cyclones (13-11). Sooner have lost 6 straight road games. Oklahoma State 88, #19 West Virginia 85. #21 North Carolina 96, NC State 89. #22 Wichita State 95, UConn 74. #23 Nevada 83, San Diego State 58. Texas A&M 85, #24 Kentucky 74. Boston College 72, #25 Miami 70. Jim Christensen has BC (15-10) headed for its first winning season since 2011.
Notre Dame 84, Florida State 69. Loyola 75, Indiana State 71. In their fifth year since abandoning the Horizon, Loyola (21-5) is driving towards an MVC title. They lead the conference by games. George Mason 72, George Washington 65. Anti-Federalists beat the Federalists. Harvard 76, Penn 67. Harvard (12-11) fights their win into a first place tie with Penn (17-7)in the Ivy. St. John's 86, Marquette 78. Navy 68, Army 59. New Mexico State 74, Grand Canyon 70. The win over 2nd place GCU pretty well wraps up the WAC regular season title for NMSU (22-3). Louisiana Monroe 89, Georgia State 82 (OT). That snaps Georgia State's 10 game winning streak. The Panthers had rallied from 16 down in the second half to force the OT.
