I was able to log on today for the first time. Coach Davis really seemed to like the relaxed format, and Matt did a nice job keeping it moving smoothly. A few highlights ... - His most trusted shooters are AD, Kuol, and Waterman, with Johnson in the next tier, and Rose there also, provided he’s set first - Waterman has impressed him a lot, especially considering all of the practices he’s had to miss. He can be effective putting it on the floor but will look more to be a shooter for now - Recruiting priorities: point guard, 6’5” or so shooter, and a post playing big - All NCAA players get a free year, treating this year like a redshirt year for everyone - The players are learning and accepting their roles. He has encouraged them to make more support noise in these empty gyms and saw progress there last weekend. Willy has impressed with his screening and defensive positioning. He wants to get more minutes for Koka but it’s tougher with Brandon returning. There were a couple of questions about Liedel - coach said he’s a great shooter, a gym rat who would’ve played quite a bit on last year’s team, and who could be a 1000 point career scorer for us - The officiating last weekend did not impress him at all. He went on a bit about hand checking (and now the arm bar) and how poorly or rarely it’s called in college - The defense should improve with the increased practice time. Communication and toughness will get better - Bul Kuol was recruited by his Coach’s son, who saw a scorer better the 5 points per game he had last year

The first question out of the box was actually about all three of the freshmen guards. As indicated above, Coach was very complimentary about Liedel, didn’t say much about LeGreair, and commented that Pink has been injured a lot this season.
Davis seemed perplexed and miffed about the formula used to determine seeding for the Horizon MBB and WBB tournaments.
He was happy about the upcoming ESPNU game, said it was long overdue that the Titans received some national exposure.
Got the impression that Davis thinks everyone will elect to be back next year.
There was a fun question at the end inquiring if Coach has had a chance to try a Detroit Coney Island since his arrival in town. He said he hadn’t, but during the coronavirus situation he frequently enjoys getting a carry out order of catfish from Bosco Fish & Seafood. The restaurant is located right across campus at 16227 Livernois.
Davis said he enjoyed the virtual Roundball, would like to schedule another one soon, possibly next week, might bring a player with him to answer some questions.

A few highlights from today ... - The 2nd half of the last game was the best defense Coach Davis has seen since he’s been here - The team is having fun, playing looser, not getting down as often with a missed shot or defensive assignment - Asked to compare this team to his last Texas Southern team that started 0-13 yet made the tournament, he said they are similar but this team has more pieces and better shooters - He would like to see quicker movement to shooting spots against double teams - Coach expects improvement from Waterman in getting himself ready to play any position - Other coaches have commented that Antoine is stronger this year - The refs have told Coach that Antoine doesn’t get as many calls as he’d like because he initiates the contact(!). CSU is the 8th most fouling team in the country so he’s hoping to see more free throws for Antoine - Rick Barnes and Greg Kampe are the only coaches that Coach has regular contact with during the season

A slight clarification here. Mike Davis said his coaching friend is Rod Barnes currently the head coach at Cal St Bakersfield. Previously, Barnes coached at Georgia State and Ole Miss. He was SEC player of the year at Ole Miss in the 1980s and he was SEC coach of the year when his Ole Miss team made it to the Sweet 16.

No, it was Cal Bakersfield-Baptist I believe. There was a merger in the 90s and they hired a marketing firm out of Pennsylvania to do the rebrand.

I even confirmed that they were both in Texas at the same time, so Rick Barnes seemed right - the right answer to the wrong question!

Some highlights from this morning... - There are no new games on the schedule, despite some apparent rumors about UK. Coach Davis feels that more practice time is more valuable at this point anyway - Fraser hasn’t practiced this week but should be ready for the weekend games. His injury reinforces the recruiting priority for a point guard - Waterman had his best week of practice, including some work coming off screens. Coach called him a special player - Coach wants his guys to know the history of the Titans (love this!), and that Earl Cureton has been a big help there. He made a point of mentioning that Antoine wrote a paper about Terry Duerod and that Earl helped with personal anecdotes and with contacting others close to Terry. - He would like to see more consistent high energy levels from Brandon as the tournament approaches. Brandon wasn’t recruited out of high school but Coach said he saw the potential as he worked out with John Lucas - Like many others, Coach has questions about the Horizon League ranking formulas, asking, for example, Why are we emphasizing home vs road with no fans? Aren’t these more like neutral site games? - The team is looking to improve their transition offense for the tournament

Some highlights from this morning... - Like many others, Coach has questions about the Horizon League ranking formulas, asking, for example, Why are we emphasizing home vs road with no fans? Aren’t these more like neutral site games? By my calculation, in HL games this year, the home team has won 54.6% of the time. That's no where near the usual number in college ball. I didn't try to look at who was playing who and where, which might matter. I would gather that there was still a home court advantage, but a greatly diminished one.
