Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) fires Donnie Marsh's former boss for not winning the ASUN tournament - or some other reason(s). He only went 21-11, but lost to Bellarmine in the tournament. StoryDoes seem odd, at least on the surface. His year by year at FGCU: 14-18. Don't fire. 10-22. Don't fire. 10-8. Extend contract. 21-11, winning 7 of last 8. Hey, let's get rid of this guy! There's no sign of progress! They lose two of their top 7, including their leading scorer, Tavian Dunn (21 ppg). The guy the fired is still just 38 yrs. old.

University of San Diego looking for a new head coach.
Kansas State's head coach has resigned. Let the Dennis Gates rumors here begin. CSU's AD came from KSU.

Bruce Weber was one of the last of the long term clean high major coaches. Put together a great career without ever falling off the good path. He finishes his career with a record of 497-301 and 12 NCAA tournament appearances. Enjoy retirement, Coach W.

South Dakota has let Todd Lee go. In four years he was 66-52, including 19-12 this year. The last 3 years he's 53-35, 32-17 in the Summit--almost two-thirds of his conference games have been wins the last three years!

Ben Howland out at Mississippi State. Seven seasons there. Only one NCAA tournament bid. Only one losing season, his first. Won twenty games three times. That's a tough place to win. Howland regularly got Pitt and UCLA into the Big Dance when he was there.
Remember, Coach Ernie Z left Coach McCallum's staff to join Howland at Miss State. He was on Howland's staff at Pitt, too, and has always been known as a solid recruiter. Good luck to him; he will probably find another coaching job if he wants one. Howland might go back to television.
EDIT: Mississippi State has released a statement clarifying that Howland has not been fired and if Mississippi State gets the NIT bid, he will coach the team. The statement didn't say if he would be retained after the NIT.

CSU didges one bullet re: Gates. But now Florida has an opening and Gates was at Florida State for years.

Travis Steele out at Xavier even though they won last night.

The Travis Steele news surprised me, especially that they fired him during the NIT after winning the first game. Curious timing.
Xavier went 70-50 during the four year Steele era, with two NIT trips. No NCAA tournament appearances, no 20 win seasons. Xavier had made the tournament 16 of 18 years before Steele started.
