On this final day of women's history month, the recent history of women's team sports is unacceptable for the proud 145 year history of the University of Detroit. Hopefully, it's also unacceptable to the Sisters of Mercy. In 2021-22, the current cumulative record of Detroit Mercy women's team sports is 5-72-2. Unacceptable.

I don’t see how this new president doesn’t fire Vowels on day 1.

Unacceptable. Embarrassing. Gross. So many more negative adjectives applicable to sum up things.

This is because they run the program on the cheap like some poor inner-city HS.

This unfair decision involving Collins could have been made right at the end of the season. Collins was not given a fair opportunity to show what she could do.

Yeah, but we’re paying Vowels $250,000 per year! Criminal! $250,000 to systematically destroy our Athletic program. This unfair decision involving Collins could have been made right at the end of the season. Collins was not given a fair opportunity to show what she could do. So, you're advocating for a 1-29 coach because? The decision to let her go may be merited by things that are unknown to us. The real problem was the decision to hire Gilbert coupled with Scott's total inability to recruit players who could compete at D1. Also, the delay in announcing her termination as coach likely results from the bureaucracy at the university's HR department which appears not to see the urgency of approving an AD's recommendation before the final week in March. Aside: this does not excuse the AD's hiring decisions, he bears responsibility for what he can control; viz., the hiring decisions. And the Gilbert hiring decision remains a total head scratcher from the day it was announced. Re: Vowels. You cannot understand his presence here as AD without recognizing the Gaither mess. In true UDM fashion, we promoted on the cheap and got an AD who was engaged in her questionable personal behavior for more than the just the 2011-12 season. But she made alumni and donors feel good. Confronted with the results of her disloyalty, Garibaldi brought in a person he could trust. This does not excuse the AD's many hiring mistakes. It does not excuse his lack of communication with alumni, donors, and fans. But it explains why he was hired here. We are now reaping the results of these events in 2008-2012. The main lesson here is that if you do things on the cheap in order to keep the bean counters happy, you get skinflint results. That should have been the lesson learned by the Trustees from the Geracioti debacle. It took 13 years before athletics began to recover from that hire. The university just spent $6 million to buy the Novi building in which to conduct some classes and start a School of Optometry in a few years. Why not commit $1.5 million to make the Sports Medicine facility into a presentable part of Calihan Hall? That facility could help the approximately 300 student-athletes plus other students who might need its services. But let's not think beyond a bean counter's view of things.

I have no inside knowledge but doubt “the bureaucracy of the university’s HR department” was the reason for dragging out the decision to let Collins go. She was on an interim time-limited appointment, presumably an at-will employee. Decision makers in Athletics had months to evaluate this employee’s performance and personal characteristics and coordinate well in advance with HR as necessary, and the announcement of the “new direction” for the program should have been done immediately following the completion of the season.

How does HR evaluate Collins performance and come up with a negative. The team played hard and represented the University in a positive way on the court. I wonder if any of these so called HR specialists attended a game or even watched a game. Where were they when Bernard Scott had a team of a few decent players and 4-5 out there who couldn’t run the length of the court without making you think they might have a coronary attack on the floor. Collins started late and from 0 and put a team out which played hard and had some talent. She had some decent players returning and a few good early commits. She should have been put on at least a one year performance based contract with realistic performance goals agreed to by both party’s. You talk about the Jesuit Standards and Way. Do these Standards include lying, deceit and using people??

That is a management (Athletics Director) decision. The responsibility to set standards, provide regular feedback, evaluate performance, make decisions on retention of employees, etc., are vested in management/supervision, not HR.

Do these Standards include lying, deceit and using people?? One of my early lessons in real world management was you should not get rid of an employee unless you have someone better to replace them with. Another lesson was that company and staff morale affects performance. Now if we have managed to lure Geno Auriemma away from UConn at a price we can afford that would be a coup and a positive move. We are a program in disarray that has gone through 3 coaches, a player revolt, and has horrible records for years. We have an New President coming in and obviously the state of the Athletics has to be something to be addressed. All of this screams for a one year caretaker contract for the WBB position at the worst. If you are unsure if she is the "one". I thought she has earned a longer contract, but could see a one year contract. Any national search will be straddled with all that negative public knowledge. It the deficiencies of Coach Collins were so glaring as to deny that caretaker position she should have been let go the day the season ended. My observation and contacts with Coach Collins has been positive and I believe her retention would have been better to the program than rolling the dice that we could find and hire someone with a proven track record that could provide a jump start to the program. I believe that the probability of that is remote. Of course, another season of recruitment has been saddled with uncertainty. The Athletic Department morale is in the pits. The number of staff that have left indicates that. The ones that I have spoken to about their new positions are, with only one minor exception, very happy with how much better things are and how happy they are where the landed. The number of Coaching changes has resulted in little positive results. Something has to give. HR makes a decision based on the information that they are given. It looks to me that Collins was given the position to shut her up and prevent some real legal exposure from the Gilbert debacle. She never had a chance for the permanent position. If so, that was a mistake, and did a disservice to the players that were recruited last year. I wish I could see a bright side. Maybe Gino will announce his new position after the Uconn national championship celebration this weekend.
