Big pickup for Anfernee.
Memphis' YouTube recruiting has been subpar for years.

Im not sure what Mike Davis is adding to this coaching staff, he's a prima Donna who doesn't like to recruit and after watching him for 6 years at UDM he certainly isn't a wizard with the exes and ohhs.

It was almost guaranteed that Davis would find a good job if he wanted to keep working. Despite his struggles here, his reputation among those who work in and cover college basketball is very good. Even with last season's disaster, he's got an overall record of 412-360 with 9 NCAA tournament appearances. That's more than good. Davis has had success at his previous stops. I think most observers nationally see the struggles here as more of an indictment on the program than on Davis himself.
It actually wouldn't have shocked me to see him end up on Dusty May's staff at Michigan. They reportedly still have a close relationship from when May was a student manager when Davis was head coach at Indiana.
He'll probably enjoy Memphis. They have great facilities, a lot of resources, and they pay out BIG money in NIL. Their weak spot recently has been the coaching of Penny Hardaway (I am admittedly not a Hardaway fan). Davis will probably help in that area. Despite some disappointing seasons while he's been at the helm, Penny continues to have the support of the administration. It's a good spot for a staff job for Davis. Hardaway is in his first college head coaching job, and it shows. He could probably benefit from having a guy on staff who has taken a team to the national championship game, and taken two other programs to the NCAA tournament.

…I think most observers nationally see the struggles here as more of an indictment on the program than on Davis himself… So many things wrong with your post but this portion is an absolute load of crock. EVERYONE seems Davis for who he is (See RBJ’s post) and NO ONE is giving him a pass for his unthinkable approach and results at UDM.

Reportedly, this is a 1 year consultancy position in which he will help Hardaway on specific issues and projects.

You're kind of relegating Sam to nonexistence with your comment.

Glade to see Davis found something. Wish things would of worked out better here. Talking to him face to face and interacting with his son at the luncheon you could tell Davis was a good dad and really want to make this program competitive.

Reportedly, this is a 1 year consultancy position in which he will help Hardaway on specific issues and projects. Sounds like a win/win for both parties. Hardaway has had no issues getting players. He is a good recruiter, and they were paying players before NIL came around. Talent hasn't been their issue. We have seen players develop here at Detroit over the past few years, so perhaps Davis can help the Tigers in that area. It's a low risk, potentially high reward arrangement.

Reporting on the fact that Memphis hired MD for a one-year consultant position on Hardaway's staff is certainly not an endorsement of MD's lack of success here. Re: MD here. Sometimes good applicants are not good fits for the specific needs of the employer. It's up to the employer to recognize that fact during the hiring process. MD on the staff at Memphis could be the perfect fit for that employer and the employee.
More importantly for me, I continue to look to the future. What's done is done. The results can't be changed. The new coach is operating on an entirely different strategy.

The new coach is operating on an entirely different strategy. Agreed. In-person recruiting and enthusiasm. It's a breath of fresh air. Hope it works out for us.
