DePaul got a commitment from Elijah Fisher, who just finished his freshman year at Texas Tech. Fisher saw action in 28 games as a Red Raider, averaging 3 points per game. He was a top 30 recruit in the class of 2023, but reclassified to 2022 after committing to Tech. I don't think he was physically ready for the jump; that reclassifying doesn't work out for everyone. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/5106288/elijah-fisher

Much easier to get players and win when you work for the "best owner in college sports," as he did at his last coaching stop.

Much easier to get players and win when you work for the "best owner in college sports," as he did at his last coaching stop. That's definitely true. It's a huge advantage. It's worth noting, though, that in the two years he's been gone from Eugene, the Ducks have lost a total of 30 games and missed the Big Dance, even in the weak PAC 12, after making the Sweet Sixteen his last year on staff.

It seems being a mid-major even a high mid-major, with a great tradition like DePaul, getting back on track is a difficult situation.

It seems being a mid-major even a high mid-major, with a great tradition like DePaul, getting back on track is a difficult situation. Sure seems that way. The Blue Demons would seem to have the right location, recruiting base, resources, and tradition to get back on track, but it is certainly taking a long time for it to happen. Stubblefield certainly knows a lot about basketball, but after showing some promising signs in year one, the program started trending down and never picked back up. It seems like they need a guy who is capable of getting the most out of the players they are currently able to get, having some success on the court, and then being able to draw bigger name recruits to the program. When Tubby Smith left Minnesota I had hoped that DePaul would hire him to right the ship, but they stuck with Oliver Purnell (who was a solid coach before he got to DePaul), and Smith landed at Texas Tech. That would have been a pairing of one of my favorite coaches with one of my favorite college basketball programs, but it was not to be. They need to get this hire right. The alumni are dying for a winner and a return to the glory days.

At this time, the Blue Demons continue their search for a head coach. PTCTitan shared some news that certainly appeared to be legitimate, in which some were reporting that DePaul would hire Porter Moser away from Oklahoma. Yesterday, however, Moser posted on social media that all of that was rumors without foundation. He claimed that he hadn't spoken to anyone about the job. Of course, it wouldn't be the first time that unfounded speculation was found on social media. I personally saw other social media accounts call it a "done deal", but Poser's denial was pretty clear. Of course, it also wouldn't be the first time that a candidate denied interest in a job and then took it later. It could be true that he himself hadn't spoken to anyone about the DePaul job, but that doesn't mean that his representatives haven't. I could see him wanting to keep it under wraps while the Sooners are still in action.
For those wondering why Poser would leave a high major job at a big money school like Oklahoma, it's a similar situation to Shaka Smart leaving Texas for Marquette. The OU fan base isn't particularly enamored with Moser, who failed to make the NCAA tourney in his first two years in Norman, after his predecessor went to the Big Dance 7 times in 9 years. (The Sooners might get in this year at 20-11, 8-10.) Plus, OU is a football school; not even Billy Tubbs could change that. Lastly, Moser is a Chicago area native, and at 55 years old he grew up watching DePaul excel under Ray Meyer. For a basketball guy from the Windy City, restoring DePaul to glory would be like writing your name in the sky.
We'll see if there was any fire in that "Moser/DePaul" smoke.
There are some loud voices among DePaul fans and Chicago media who want to see Bobby Hurley get the DePaul job. I don't get the attraction, given the struggles he's had at Arizona State (3 NCAA appearances, NCAA win in eight seasons before this year's current 14-16, 8-11 campaign). Maybe they're seeing something I'm not.
Other names bandied about include Bryce Drew, who flamed out at Vanderbilt but has excelled at Grand Canyon; coaching renegade and scandal marred Will Wade; and the current coaches at Indiana State and Drake. Obviously, the Demons need to hit a home run here. Maybe Ray Meyer will put in a good word with the man upstairs and some blessings will fall DePaul's way. (And maybe some will drift a few hours East and land at Six Mile and Livernois, also.)

The Blue Demons are apparently hiring former Ohio State coach Chris Holtzman for the big chair. Holtman previously had success in the Big East at Butler, going to three NCAA tournaments and making the Sweet Sixteen one year. He took Ohio State to the NCAA tournament four times to start his tenure there, and it would have been five if the 2020 tourney had not been cancelled. He's a guy who has had good success at different programs, he has Midwest connections, and will probably benefit from being at a "basketball only" school like DePaul. They've got the money, a good conference, and a very good local recruiting base. He hasn't had to revive a dormant program, as Butler and Ohio State were in pretty good shape when he took over, but it also won't take much for him to gain some goodwill with the fanbase. As a longtime DePaul fan, I am optimistic. www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/depaul-hires-chris-holtmann-blue-demons-tap-ex-ohio-state-coach-to-turn-around-floundering-program/

Tony Stubblefield lands back at Oregon with Dana Altman. The Duck fan base seems quite happy to get him back.

Former Milwaukee and Butler coach Lavell Jordan has been hired by DePaul in the position of assistant coach/general manager. I think that's a win/win for both.
