Didn't want to bog down the Scoreboard thread with OU thoughts, so drifted over here. In the Horizon Roundtable preview of the OU team on Rocket Watts it was mentioned: "He is a prolific scorer that is now going to be in an offense that asks him to display that skill and get his." In Commish's recap he commented: "Rocket Watts was not sharp, shooting 3-11 (1-6 from behind the arc) and finishing with 11 points. But Watts led the Grizzlies in minutes played and shots. That might tell us something about what OU's offense is going to look like" I strongly disagree with the HRT preview on Watts based on seeing him at State for 2 years, and it appears stat wise he continued his similar play at Miss St. Watts is a good player to be sure, but he will be more of a swiss army knife. He will be a leader, he will hustle, he will play tough nosed defense. He will do it all. The one thing he absolutely is NOT is a prolific scorer, well at least his 3 years of high level D1 ball suggests that to be the case. He's always done all the little (and important) things to make his team better. I would've really liked to see him as a Titan. His shooter %'s speak for themselves. He is a career 27% shooter behind the arc and 37% overall - each season being roughly the same. His two years at State saw him average roughly 8-9 pts per game, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal per game. Similar to OU with Jalen Moore, at MSU he was the sidekick to another great PG in Cassius Winston. I think he will settle in nicely as a result of that. I don't agree. Watts averaged 25.6 ppg as a HS soph, 26.8 ppg as a junior. He played his senior year at Spire and I can't find any stats--they play very irregular schedules--but I know in one game he scored over 60 points. As a freshman at MSU he played off the bench and was never more than the #3 scoring option, but he averaged 18 ppg over the season's final 4 games and I think they expected a big breakout season his sophomore year. Preseason predictions for Watts soph year are full of quotes like this, from 247Sports: "the thing that makes Watts special is his ability to score." Or this, from 3 Man Weave: "Playing Loyer will also allow Watts to spend time on the wing and focus on scoring, where he’s probably most comfortable... Izzo knows how high Watts’ upside is on the offensive end." He averaged over 11 shots per game in the team's first 7 games (leading the team in attempts 3 times and second most overall to Aaron Henry), and twice scored 20 or more points. But he wasn't shooting well, especially from three (9-31), and his shooting volume, and eventually minutes, then dropped. When he transferred, a typical comment was that he was "a shooter being asked to play out of position", e.g. at point. And it was noted that State was unhappy with his defense as well as his offense. At the other MSU he had hip surgery in the offseason, then fell on that same hip in practice at the start of the year, delaying his debut. He never fit in--he never played more than 20 minutes in a game (he hit that mark exactly one time). I think Watts is very much a scorer (or at least he and coaches think of him that way), and I think that's why he went to OU and probably didn't give us much consideration (AD is our scorer). All the reports out of Oakland are that they intend for Watts to score. Whether he can is another issue--as you note, he simply hasn't hit the three in college. If Watts doesn't score, he can still help Oakland, but he's there to score points. Moore will play the point. Lorne Bowman is probably a better defensive option. They plan to let Watts shoot.

They plan to let Watts shoot. At 26% from behind the arc, I say let the Rocket shoot it all day long! (please don't dig up this post when he goes 7-8 from 3 in a OU win over the Titans later this season)

OOOOF COOOOOUUURRRSE, no one cares on this page. I couldn't help myself That does suck for him. Hope he is good by the time we beat them, so they don't have any excuses to wine about. They always complain about the refs when they lose to us.

Update on Jalen Moore by OU's part-time color commentator on TV. I note that he was correct when he said that Bowman would get some minutes (8) at Rochester last night.

It's interesting that Bowman played just 8 minutes last night against Rochester.

Oakland somewhat quietly off to a pretty poor start. 2-6 overall with 1 of those wins over non-D1 Defiance.
Two real time RPI's have them at 349 and 351 (out of 363 D1 teams). I know its still quite early and there's noise in the RPI numbers but even still it's not nothin'.
It's not just the L's but also how they are doing it. The team hasn't really gelled like past editions just yet, I'm guessing its an element of a lower overall level of talent (no Cain, Felder, Nunn...). And to date the 'feel good' homecoming script hasn't been followed as Bowman and Watts have underwhelmed (Watts especially). It's still early (its still Nov on the calendars). I'm not here to cast stones or bury them but...I can't imagine this is an ideal start for Kampe and Co.

Senior guard Blake Lampman will be out 4-6 weeks with a broken arm. He had been averaging 12 ppg.

I'm part of a lunch time group of about 100 or so that has interesting local sports figures come talk all winter long. Today Kampe was the speaker. Izzo comes every year, and Mel Tucker has started making it an annual event. Real interesting folks come through. People will throw things at me on here but hear me out...Kampe was very likeable and I really enjoyed hearing from him. A few tidbits of note...
- his Mother died last Sunday. He briefly touched on how difficult that has been. He had the option to cancel and reschedule because of the circumstances, but he said he definitely didn't want to cancel as it gave him an outlet and to be somewhere else (they also have a game tonight, even more kind of him with his time)
- He said all the guys in their program buy into beating UD, and buy into it all year long. He then noted they are 18-3 since joining the HL against our meager Titans, and those 3 losses were some of the worst days of his life. He said its the UM/MSU rivalry for them. (Me suspects Coach Davis doesn't bring that same intensity/animosity to getting up all year long for Oakland to our pack of wanderers and 1-and-done guys)
- Question from audience about how they stopped Davis. He said they looked for specific situations to double team him. He then went on to talk about what an incredible player Antoine is and how its a shame more in metro Detroit haven't supported or realized the talent that he is. He also said it was tough to admit and all but Antoine is a great one (and said its like Harbaugh coming and being over the top nice about Payton Thorne)
- He said the game day atmosphere at OU is fantastic, how they cram people into the little place and how its like a movie set. And then said its like a Western from the old days as just outside camera view are "the worst facilities in America". Lamented lack of a practice facility, proper locker rooms and working showers (probably exaggeration...)
- Despite the facilities, he tells recruits that they've put 5 guys in the NBA the past 15 years and that's the best recruiting advantage they have, and its 'unmatched by any mid major' (probably an exaggeration but the point is made)
All in all a really enjoyable time hearing from him on various college hoops topics. I never really was in the anti-Kampe camp and that he's horrible etc, consider me quite charmed (and charm-able) I guess *insert shrugging shoulders emoji*

I never really was in the anti-Kampe camp and that he's horrible etc, consider me quite charmed (and charm-able) I guess *insert shrugging shoulders emoji* A few years back I had a 20-30 minute one on one conversation with Kampe up in the sparsely filled upper level of Calihan during a Lady Titans game. I happened to walk past him and congratulated him on a win they had against Washington, intending to keep going, but he struck up a conversation. We talked about Titan Reggie, who he really seemed to like. Talked about players trying to leave as grad transfers (he joked that he had warned all of the professors at Oakland to let him know if Kay Felder was talking about graduating early). Talked about the difference in competing in the Summit and competing in the HL. Good talk, and he struck me as a pleasant guy. He's definitely a salesman, as he was certainly fishing for donations with those comments about how bad the facilities are. And I believe he is right about OU placing more of an emphasis on the rivalry than our coaches and players do. Nice of him to speak so highly of AD. My condolences to him on the loss of his mother, a pain I know all too well from three years ago. I think Kampe is a good coach. I don't think he is as good as some on this board think (they haven't made the NCAA tournament since 2011) but he is at least a solid coach. He benefits from a large student body and an administration that treats their basketball program as a priority, two advantages that we lack. But kudos to him for taking advantage of those things and fielding a competitive program. I have had several conversations with him since that first one, and he is always pleasant as he wishes us good luck "except for the Oakland game".

I just checked an NBA box score and was slightly surprised to see Jamal Cain was getting some decent run in the league.
Good for him. Detroit kid. Hell of a scorer. 😉
