Well I guess it was nothing Who knows. Not long ago it was considered highly unlikely that Texas and Oklahoma would leave the Big 12 for the SEC and UCLA and USC would end up in the Big Ten. Those ACC teams to the SEC makes more sense than the two LA schools going to a conference with Rutgers and Maryland. Even if they are not talking about it now, they will probably talk about it in the future.

Greed has totally taken over. History and tradition mean nothing anymore. Seems like the powers that be are looking only as far as the next big tv contract, rather than looking at the long term interests of the sports. Conference rivalries and competitions have always been a big part of the attraction of college sports for me and my generation. Maybe the decision makers believe that younger and future fans won't care about that, and that they will be happy with two super conferences and everyone else lagging behind. Maybe they're right and the future is bright. But between the pay for play, the wild transfer rate, and now the destruction of the traditional conference system, I'm losing some of my enthusiasm for collegiate sports.

Why is it greed if a school improves its situation? Alumni and fans want bigger and better programs and teams, where is the money to do that going to come from? UDM is a perfect example, for years people following the school have had issues that the school never jumped into the Big East or Atlantic 10 and stayed in the Horizon, if the UDM would have gone into the Atlantic 10 during the PW years, it would have been cheaper, maybe affordable, now it's not, maybe now it's impossible. Certain an Atlantic 10 UDM product would be better than a Horizon UDM product. As for Conference rivalries, bigger and larger Conferences make for better rivalries and will put an end to some of the scheduling issues and cupcake games, the NFL/AFL model is a good example, nobody cares if Miami is in the AFL or Tampa Bay is in the NFL if they both have good teams. A USC/Michigan game every few years is certainly better than a Michigan/Slippery Rock game. People treated that game as a joke, Michigan wrote the check and took the win, maybe that win got them a better bowl, is that fair?

Yup and then they made the mistake of scheduling Appalachian State and the old reality of everyone laces them up about the same hit home!

Slippery Rock has played some games at the Big House, but opponents have been Wayne State, etc. For years they would always announce the Slippery Rock score at home games at U-M, and they were sort of adopted by the Wolverine fan base. www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2020-10-27/slippery-rock-footballs-history-michigan-explained

Good article, sometimes timing is everything. Watching Nebraska play last weekend, one has to wonder if Nebraska was applying to the Big Ten today would they take them? I doubt they would get in. They are a prime Big 12 team, timing, the only thing going for them is their fans travel well, they are lucky they are in the Big 10.
