Speaking of the Big East, check out this reaction from Providence head coach Ed Cooley when he found out that Marquette beat Illinois. He was truly excited for his conference rival getting a big win.

That's pretty funny. Can't picture Harbaugh reacting similarly to a big Buckeye victory.

That's pretty funny. Can't picture Harbaugh reacting similarly to a big Buckeye victory. Cooley was like sincerely excited about that win, not just giving lip service in the name of conference unity. It was fun to watch. Yeah, I can't imagine Harbaugh reacting that way to any other team's win, especially the Buckeyes or Spartans.

Ankle Breakin' Bryce Aiken is healthy-ish, and seeing some time for Seton Hall. From Jon Rothstein on Twitter: "Seton Hall's Bryce Aiken has only committed a total of four turnovers this season in 82 minutes. Pirates are 4-0 in games where he logs double figure minutes. At Creighton tonight." Ankle Breakin' Bryce Aiken has been cleared for all basketball activities at Seton Hall after another injury plagued season in 2020-21. Would be nice for the kid if he can enjoy an injury free season. Unfortunately, it's looking like Aiken is dealing with an ankle again. Actually very sad to see a kid not able to stay healthy.

Looks like Aiken was able to go last night and got some clutch points in the last two minutes of the game. Good for him. He's put in a lot of rehab and recovery time.

He was really favoring the ankle in the first half. Limping around. Glad he was able to stay on the court.

The Big East won the Gavitt Games in the first time in the history of the Gavitt Games, winning 6 games while losing 2.

Per Jon Rothstein on Twitter: "The Big East is now 77-21 as a conference. League has gotten exceptional mileage early out of both Marquette and Providence. Conference is bouncing back after last season."
Marquette and Providence unexpectedly picking up some high major scalps has been a big plus for the league. DePaul has beaten mostly mid majors, but their win over Rutgers was big at the time.

The Big East is off to a great start in 2021-22. The past eight days were a great showing for the conference.
12/5: South Carolina 80, Georgetown 67 Xavier 77, OK State 71
12/7: Providence 68, Vermont 58 DePaul 87, Duquesne 67 Butler 66, Oklahoma 62 Villanova 67, Syracuse 53 12/8: Xavier 96, Ball State 50 West Virginia 56, Connecticut 53 Georgetown 100, UMBC 71 Marquette 64, Kansas State 63
12/9: #23 Seton Hall 64, #7 Texas 60 St. John's 88, Monmouth 83
12/10: DePaul 62, Louisville 55
12/11: Creighton 83, #24 BYU 71 Georgetown 79, Syracuse 75 Providence 68, CCSU 53 Butler 66, Eastern Illinois 54 Connecticut 74, St. Bonaventure 64 Xavier 83, Cincinnati 63 UCLA 67, Marquette 56
12/12: St. John's 88, Colgate 64 #2 Baylor 57, #6 Villanova 36 #23 Seton Hall 77, Rutgers 63
Bunch of wins over power conference teams. Rivalry wins by Georgetown, Seton Hall, and Xavier. No "Mid Major Win of the Day" type losses. No "bad" losses. That's a solid week for a league that a lot of people wrote off after they split.

Couple of cool things about the Georgetown/Syracuse game from a week ago. First, Bill Raftery was the color commentator on the broadcast, which was fitting given his coaching background. Second, Georgetown used that game to dedicate their floor to John Thompson Jr. (Big John). Nice way to honor Big John, but it seems as if he might deserve more. After all, he was the coach there for 27 years, won a national championship, is a member of two basketball Halls of Fame, and contributed big money to Georgetown to improve the athletic and academic programs. Thinking about it, maybe they should have named the whole building after him.

Mid January look at the Big East.
Villanova is at the top of the conference, as expected. The 'Cats took some lumps early, losing to Purdue and UCLA, and getting crushed in back to back games by Baylor and Creighton. Since then, it's been smooth sailing, as Nova is on a six game winning streak, with three wins over ranked teams to go with today's 40 point win over Butler and a 34 point blowout revenge game against Creighton. They are the clear favorite going forward.
As for the rest of the league, Providence has been the pleasant surprise, rolling to a 14-2 record, with non-con wins over Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Texas Tech. The Friars are looking good. Xavier and Seton Hall have also been ranked this season, although the Hall is probably dropping out after losing four of their past six. Marquette is another pleasant surprise, with some non-conference success in a rebuilding year and a 4-3 start in conference play. UConn is 2-2 in conference and they own a win over Auburn. Butler, Creighton, and St. John's are keeping pace with each other, while Georgetown and DePaul are struggling.
Look for Villanova to hold on to first place, but watch for UConn and Seton Hall to string together some wins. I expect that we'll see four to five Big East teams in the Big Dance.
The Big East is sort of the anti PAC 12, and not just in geography. While the PAC 12 is lacking in notable non-conference wins, the Big East has plenty. In addition to the Providence and UConn wins discussed above, the conference also has these victories: Nova over Syracuse and Tennessee. Xavier over Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech and Cincinnati. Marquette over Illinois, West Virginia, Ole Miss, and Kansas State. Creighton over Nebraska. Seton Hall over Michigan, Rutgers, Cal, and Texas. DePaul over Rutgers and Louisville. Georgetown over Syracuse.
Lots of ranked teams and Power Five programs in that mix. The Big East is for real this season.

UConn took a loss off the court yesterday, a bigger loss than any they will take on the court. An independent arbitrator ruled in the favor of former head coach Kevin Ollie, and ordered UConn to pay Ollie $11 million dollars in the next ten business days. Quick recap of the Ollie situation. He played at UConn under Jim Calhoun and joined the staff after his NBA career was over. He was named head coach when Calhoun left. The program was under sanctions for previous issues, but in his first year, 2012-13, the Huskies went 20-10. They were ineligible for post season play. In year two, UConn went 32-8 and won the NCAA title. (Detractors say he won with Calhoun's players, but it was Ollie who was recruiting those players to UConn and helping develop them as an assistant.) Year three was an NIT year, year four they made the second round of the NCAA tournament. In the next two seasons, the team went a combined 30-35, being hit hard by the injury bug. The administration not only decided to fire him, but they decided to try to fire him for cause to escape from paying his buyout. (UConn has famously had budget issues in their athletic program.) They school self reported allegations of violations to the NCAA and fired Ollie. Ollie fought the firing, and it ended up in arbitration, with this being the result. I'm happy for Ollie. I think the university tried to screw him to save some money. Earlier this week, UConn's athletic department announced that their budget deficit had grown from $43 million to 47 million. That was before the ruling. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/33109968/arbitrator-rules-uconn-improperly-fired-huskies-men-basketball-coach-kevin-ollie

And obviously, so did the arbitrator. I can't believe basketball is losing money for UConn, and my guess is that their football program is a huge drain.
