I'm just saying, I don't remember us getting an APR ban when we were the University of Detroit.

Our law school got a prominent mention on a recent Detroit Public Radio program. Of course, Stephen Henderson referred to it exclusively as "U of D Law School".

It would be funny if it wasn't so freaking tragic. Good thing we didn't change to U of D a few years ago. Can you imagine the confusion?? I was going to say that we should get a refund from those consultants, but in actuality they probably told the Administration exactly what they wanted to hear. Seems like the goal of the whole "study" was always to strengthen the Mercy part of the brand.

Actually, Rogo, the cutline used the term "Unviersity of Detroit-Mercy" -- misspelling University, too. (Is that the consultants' fault, too?) Garth Brooks wore the hoodie, apparently given to him when he was at the school, in a performance that has been viewed millions and millions of times. The lesson to be learned is that the Athletics Department should make Brooks an honorary Titan and send him a big box of logo'ed gear to wear in other appearances. And some for Trisha Yearwood, too!

Agree, sloppy journalism, by now the local newspapers should be getting this right. That said, I think the inconsistency in how the University is referenced (by media, by students, by alumni, by the general public) at this stage of the game demonstrates that there are some inherent issues with the name itself that complicate branding.

"They used to market themselves as University of Detroit and Detroit Mercy was an alternate name for athletics."
Good Lord...make it stop.

Related to our branding problems (albeit in a totally different industry)...the recent launch of HBO Max. I enjoy listening to tech related podcasts, and I've heard HBO be absolutely lambasted for having HBO Max while they also have HBO Go and HBO Now -- and basically creating massive brand confusion in the marketplace (there are actually operational reasons far behind the scenes as to why they have these different names). Sound familiar? U of D...UDM...Detroit Mercy...
Consumers don't really understand what each of the HBO products are, what they have access to, how they access content, etc. The marketing experts talk about 'brand architecture' and how this is a major fail with all the confusion they've created. On top of that, the original HBO 'brand' was held as prestigious tv/movie making and now is being further diluted by all of this mess.
There's some interesting articles out there if you are interested on the topic. The parallels to our brand struggles for the past 30 years, and then re-upped again the past 2 years, is indeed striking.

My example for stupid branding moves was back when I was an IT guy, and my role including buying computers and software. I got a call one day from my rep at ComputerLand about a big corporate announcement. ComputerLand was one of the dominant computer retailers in American but they wanted to branch out and do more than just sell boxes, a cut-throat low-margin business. The company announced that they were changing their name to better reflect their evolved business, which included consulting and networking. Now they were to be known as Vanstar. Those of us at the announcement looked at each other with puzzled looks. "They're getting into the moving business?" ComputerLand pretty much reflected what they did; Vanstar reflected ... nothing in particular. The company was gone in five years.
