Wow, what a season for college hoops. First Evansville beats Kentucky and now SFA beats Duke. Nothing but respect for SFA.

Another rebrand failure... From the Long Island University webpage: "Please refer to the team as “Long Island University” at first mention, and just “LIU” from then on. The campuses two locations, Brooklyn and Post, are NOT to be mentioned in reference to the team. Only LIU." From ESPN: Note that for years LIU was simply "LIU" or "Long Island." Then for some reason they began calling themselves "LIU-Brooklyn" for a time. Now they can't shake it and get back to a name that still evokes memories for old-timers like the Commissioner.

View AttachmentInteresting branding on this item in the Calihan Hall gift shop. “Detroit Mercy” on the shield logo in tiny lettering, but old school “University of Detroit” sewn on with larger letters dominates. $60. I might even buy this. I was tempted to buy this hoodie last night, but in the end I couldn't plunk down the cash for something with the M word on it. I may reconsider in the future. I would guess that this design was created in response to the dissatisfaction with the current name and branding. But it's a half measure, at best, which won't make anyone happy.

Went to the Gonzaga message board, curious how they referenced their fellow Jesuit-affiliated university up next on the basketball schedule. In the prediction thread, so far it’s:
Detroit Mercy Detroit Mercy University DetMerc Mercy (three times) Mercy Rule DM UDM
Also, in a reply to a mention of our roster, the comment “They have nuns that are 6’8”?”
It’s 29 years out from the consolidation and three years since the consultant-inspired rebrand rollout, and the above is further proof that “Detroit Mercy” is not conducive to a consistent and positive brand for the University.
IMO, here’s what we should have done:
Legally change the name of the school to
“University of Detroit Jesuit-Mercy”
The “Jesuit-Mercy” segment would be included on the University seal, on diplomas, etc., reflecting the Catholic orientation of the school and co-equal institutional connection to the Society of Jesus and Sisters of Mercy religious orders.
Deeper down, in our recruitment literature and personal pitches to prospective students, the school would emphasize that we are the only university in America built on the two historically strong pillars of Catholic education and service, the Jesuits and Sisters of Mercy. The Mercy connection to the University of Detroit would be emphasized, not diminished as some feared with a branding change.
The general brand of the school, however, would be “University of Detroit.” This is similar to many other schools that adopt under a more concise and brand-friendly name.
If we had the smarts to do that three years ago, there would be no mass confusion, we would be universally known under a consistent brand today.

If we had the smarts to do that three years ago, there would be no mass confusion, we would be universally known under a consistent brand today. I agree with this 100%. It eliminates the confusion, solidifies our status as Detroit's primary institution of higher learning, allows us to use what the market has determined is the best name, and keeps us connected to our history. It also equals the status of Mercy and the Jesuits in the organization, which the current name does not do. I can't imagine that the members of the Jesuit order are happy about the way the Jesuits are relegated to unmentioned status in the name of the school, the website, uniforms, etc. Never has such an obvious solution to a problem been so completely disregarded by the decision makers. I have yet to hear a compelling reason for Detroit Mercy, rather than the University of Detroit, being the name of our institution. On the plus side, at least the Gonzaga fans aren't teasing us about being a hospital.

This is the stuff that gets put up on Twitter when a team with name issues plays the #1 team in the nation

Also, from the Gonzaga message board: "We were actually scheduled to play Detroit, yet once they found out they were gonna face #1 team in NCAA, they changed their name to Detroit-Mercy, so we'd go easy on em."

From the Gonzaga message board:
“I had no idea that Detroit Mercy was the old Detroit....a pretty darn good team with players like Dave Debusschere among others.... and now coached by Mike Davis...I remember now they used to kick our butt with Burgess on the team no less....they were really good back in the 90's....
“I will apologize for my ignorance and lack of respect....perhaps they intend to revitalize their program....they were nice enough to play Gonzaga when we were just getting started in D!....Welcome to the Kennel….”

That hurts. Pretty classy post by that fan, though.

Seems obvious to everyone except the decision makers at our institution.

Update on 1130 AM sports radio today stated that "U of D" was hosting Northern Kentucky tonight.
The beat goes on...

Individuals and entities who publicly called the program "U-D" in public comments or published statements over the past few days as we got a little more exposure due to the jersey retirements:
Earl Cureton Willie Green (who started playing for the Titans almost a decade AFTER the merger) The Sports update guys on 1130 AM Radio personnel on 910 AM leading up to the Titans pre-game show Various other people on social media
On the other hand, the ESPN ticker refers to us as DET Mercy, so that will probably make the Sisters happy.

From the same site - $30 for a t-shirt is kinda pricy Vintage Brand currently has a daily promotion where they give away a $100 credit for a “shopping spree” on a daily basis. I was the lucky winner of today’s random drawing and will be able to stockpile enough University of Detroit t-shirts to last a lifetime.
