That might explain delay in announcement, the University will name Davis coach and launch new “Detroit” no-Mercy brand at the same press conference.

“Our consultants advised that to return to ‘University of Detroit’ as the school name would cause mass confusion.” — UDM official, August 2017.

“Our consultants advised that to return to ‘University of Detroit’ as the school name would cause mass confusion.” — UDM official, August 2017. Biggest lie of the whole process. Consultants will tell you whatever you indicate you want to hear,as long as you pay them. I think it was the Commissioner who said it appeared the real intent of that entire effort waa to strengthen the Mercy brand.

In the flurry of mentions we're getting since the Davis news became official, I am reading a lot of references to "Detroit", "University of Detroit", "U-D", etc. The WWJ sports reports at 15 and 45 referred to us exclusively as the "Detroit Titans". Of course, all official notices from the school list us as Detroit M@#$y", but a national college basketball guy on Twitter caused a stir when he said that Davis was taking the "Detroit" job and a bunch of people thought he meant the Pistons.
And the band played on...

I had mentioned yesterday on the other board that 97.1's Jamie and Stoney interviewed Davis yesterday morning. Jamie first introduced him as the "new head basketball coach of the University of Detroit Jesuit". He closed the interview again with UDJ and Stoney corrected him and said "University of Detroit Mercy". They bickered back and forth for a minute and finally both decided to refer to the school as "U of D" moving forward.

Jamie first introduced him as the "new head basketball coach of the University of Detroit Jesuit". He closed the interview again with UDJ and Stoney corrected him and said "University of Detroit Mercy". They butchered back and forth for a minute and finally both decided to refer to the school as "U of D" moving forward. Good Lord. What a mess. I'm 53 years old and I don't think I have ever seen an organization so badly bungle a brand. I know we have discussed this often, but adding mercy to the name all those years ago immediately caused confusion and gave the school and sports programs a "small time" feel. Twenty plus years later, we had a chance to fix the mistake and return to the University of Detroit brand that is so strong it's still on everyone's lips after two decades plus of the University trying to kill it. Seemed like a simple choice, but instead we doubled down on the mistake and intensified efforts to make "mercy" the prominent part of the name. In all these years, I haven't heard anyone come up with a reason why that is a better fit for the long and short term goals of the University than simply "University of Detroit". Not much has been happening with recruits on the Men's basketball side, of course, but the Women's team has had several visitors on campus over the summer. Recruits tweeting things like, "Loved my visit to the University of Detroit" has happened often. Maybe one day...

Add NBC Sports to the list of entities that just call us "Detroit".

On one of the EMU message boards, fans are hoping for a game with "U of D". I think they mean us.

The latest Titan commit announced that he was going to attend the "University of Detroit". I have also read comments about Dan Hasty taking over the "U of D" radio play by play role.
Everyone wants to call us University of Detroit but us.

Everyone wants to call us University of Detroit but us. At first I always called us Detroit or U of D because that's what I grew up with. A couple years I decided, "might as well try to make it work," and made a conscious effort at UDM. But I've noticed most people still use Detroit, and even the University doesn't seem serious about "UDM" or "Detroit-Mercy," as many have noted inconsistent uses by the school itself. So I've joined the resistance. "U of D" or "Detroit" it is!

Actually, I can't think of a time I did it, but there must have been some occasion when it happened. Strictly U of D and Detroit for me. Our logo looks like it represents UM-Dearborn instead of our school. Oh, well...Go Titans!

Although I'm a U of D guy, I tell people who ask about the new logo that the D and M stand for Detroit, Michigan.

The logo that coach Davis was wearing when he was interviewed on channel 4 back in July looks just like the slapstick candy. www.google.com/search?q=slapstick+candy&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjLhfXk1OPcAhUJ74MKHRGAC3IQ_AUICygC&biw=1035&bih=924#imgrc=EePKhl3HGOCfQM:
