I talk to a lot of people involved in the local high school and college basketball scene. The vast majority of them, including those under 40, refer to us as U-D. That includes coaches, officials, players, etc. But, hey, the branding effort designed to emphasize the "Mercy" and de-emphasize the "Detroit" is having some success, as I am starting to hear more people, including some media members (local and otherwise) refer to us simply as Mercy. So, I guess the decision makers are happy to disregard all that history and civic pride. Can you explain the effort to de-emphasize the Detroit? I've seen no instance where Mercy is highlighted over Detroit. The D in the log is bigger than the M. All signage has Detroit above Mercy. Promotions always talk about a school / education "in the Jesuit and Mercy traditions." The sports website is still DetroitTitans.com. The school website UDMercy.edu is UD first and Mercy second. What have I missed? Apparently you missed that the school's website address doesn't include the word Detroit, but includes the word mercy. Maybe you missed that the M in the logo is in front of what appears to be a U turned on it's side. People have told me that if they didn't know the logo was supposed to be for UDM, they wouldn't even recognize that obscured shape as the letter D.

The only rule on this board is that the school's name is "Detroit," "U of D," or "UD".

Well, anyone who misses the big old D in the UDM logo needs glasses -- and the D is bigger than the M. And, as I said, the website is UD Mercy. (The rule on this website is to use UD; the website URL does.) It harkens back to the name "UD" with Mercy tacked onto the end. The school uniforms say Detroit Mercy -- Detroit first and above Mercy. Nowhere does the school use udMERCY. Nowhere is Detroit left off and Mercy left on. I've never heard or seen anything about the University of Mercy or University of mumblemumble Mercy. And I've never seen any reference to the school as just Mercy. Except maybe on Oakland's postings, but consider the source. The Sports Illustrated exclusively used "Detroit Mercy." Where is the de-emphasis of Detroit in favor of Mercy?

Where is the de-emphasis of Detroit in favor of Mercy? Asked and answered. You just don't agree with the answer. If you actually think that website address is an equal treatment of the two names, I don't know what to tell you. The Mercy name is the only one actually in the address. Detroit isn't there. If it was equal, the website would be detroitmercy.edu. As far as the logo, you keep saying that the D is bigger, while ignoring the fact that the m is actually in front of and blocking the D. The D is obscured and not even finished. As someone (I think it was the Commissioner) said, the logo looks like the profile of a guy with a puffy haircut. You really think the D is the prominent feature in the logo? Do you actually think they get equal billing? The program has been referred to as Mercy in writing (the Detroit News had such a mention) and by announcers during televised broadcasts of basketball games. It has been pointed out previously on the message boards. The old "I have never heard or seen it so it must not have happened" line isn't an actual rebuttal.

Not crazy about that color scheme. We will continue to see some variation of "No Mercy" in derogatory comments, postings, t-shirts, etc., from opposing teams and fans. It's an easy target.

FWIW, I attended a Career Center advisory council meeting on campus earlier this week. There were representatives from about ten employers at the table. Without exception, every reference to the University (maybe 20 total) in their discussions during the 90 minute session was “U-D.” The University employees did call the school “Detroit Mercy.” Most organizations would kill to have a brand as enduring and popular was U-D. They would love to have a logo as classy and as effective as the lower case Old English d. And we have been trying to kill both of them for almost thirty years. The other thing about school officials and others referring to us as simply Detroit Mercy is that it sounds like the name of a hospital. If someone not familiar heard the term Detroit Mercy, they would think it was part of the DMC. At one time, there was a link to a site that merch with the old English d logo could be purchased - it may have been a U of D alumni type site. Does any one know what that would be/if that merch is currently available? I'm in the market for either T's or Sweatshirts/Hoodies and you can never own enough caps....

The University bookstore and website “store” used to have a very limited selection of “University of Detroit Alumni” and “Mercy College Alumni” clothing items available for purchase. That has been discontinued to the best of my knowledge, I believe phased out about the time of the rollout of the new “Detroit Mercy” brand a couple years ago. I’ve been motivated to keep my weight down so I can still fit into the U of D sweatshirts I acquired during the ‘70s.

I haven't been on campus for quite a few months, but while I've not seen anything on the bookstore website specific to either UofD or Mercy College I have always seen a display in the physical bookstore for UofD / olde English d materials: mugs, caps, sweatshirts. I think almost all of them specify alumni.
Unfortunately, while I've already outgrown all my original UofD stuff but I still hang onto it.

Man, I should have stocked up on more of the U of D Alumni stuff previously. I have some hats and a few other items that feature the olde English d, and had planned on stopping by the bookstore to pick up a few more next week when I take my niece up to campus for the women's basketball camp. Wish they would have given a warning that they were going to discontinue it.
I may have literally purchased my last university related clothing/wearable items, unless they come out with some items that say simply "Titans" without the name of the school.

FWIW, I rather like the University’s official seal. shown below. A lot of colleges offer clothing items with their seal, I know I’ve seen this for U-M. The sweatshirt I’m wearing in the photo above where I’m standing with BA is an example of what I’m talking about. The written Detroit Mercy branding guidelines adopted in 2017 specifically state that use of the seal is limited, not to be used in this way. i

Sweatshirt with Detroit Mercy official seal, purchased prior to new branding guidelines. For my personal taste, I like this look better than items with the school name and DM logo. Attachments:
