I loved the lower case olde English D. I am thankful that I still have a few items with that logo.

Saw an interesting tweet. The official twitter account for Titan men's posted the following.
"UDM Pride is when the staff is out buying furniture, for their homes, in their polos and people stop to talk about the history and the greats like: Willie Green, Terry Duerod and Dickie V! @dickiev ! The Titan Brand is alive and well in our city!!"
I don't wear things with the UDM brand or logo, so I don't know if that is an accurate representation of people immediately connecting new logo with the school. I do know that when I wear my University of Detroit Alumni gear with the old English D I get comments about Titan basketball history and non-athletic U of D memories and experiences. Maybe someone who wears the Mercy branded stuff can let us know if their experience mirrors this tweet.
The ironic thing is the official twitter handle for the men's team is @detroitmbb, for Detroit men's basketball. The women's handle is Detroit_WBB. No Mercy.
You know, I wasn't going to bring up branding today until I saw that tweet...

Coach Davis was introduced on Sports Final Edition last night as the coach of "the University of Detroit".
We keep trying to pound that square peg into a round hole.

WWJ did a story about Davenport University opening a satellite campus in Midtown. The story began with "Move over U of D,make way for DU."

The official Bronco social media accounts, the giant electronic billboard in downtown Kalamazoo, and the game program I bought inside the arena all referred to us as Detroit.

Interesting Detroit nick name info (Also note we're called Mercy toward the end of the tweet) Ugh. And that's not even accurate. Mercy College was started by the Sisters in 1941, so there was no "Mercy" involvement in decisions made in 1877 and 1894. It's like when people say John Long played at Detroit Mercy. The whole thing gives me a headache. And I have to say, I hear more and more outsiders (including announcers on non-local broadcasts) refer to us as simply "Mercy". I guess the Sisters are getting their wish.

On this forum, the name of the school is University of Detroit. "Detroit," "UD," and "U of D" are considered acceptable.

I guess the Sisters are getting their wish. I don't think that story on the name "Titans" is correct. I recall reading in the past that the Titans picked up the name sometime in the early 1920s (I don't recall the exact year), when a sportswriter began calling the particularly tall basketball squad 'Titans." The 1925 Yearbook uses the name "Titans." The 1923 and 1924 yearbooks do not, just referring to teams as "U of D" or "the Red and White." Meanwhile, the Detroit Tigers baseball club did not officially adopt the name "Tigers" until 1900; before that they were sometimes called the "Wolverines" (the nickname of the previous Detroit franchise in the National League), and sometimes the Tigers. The earliest known use of the name “Tigers” in the news is usually said to have been in the Detroit Free Press on April 16, 1895. The name is sometimes attributed to a National Guard unit based in Detroit that was called the Tigers; others say it came from the orange and black socks worn by the team, though that was apparently a post-1890s uniform introduction.

I looked a little more at this ('cause that's the kind of obsessive thing I do). Through the 1923-24 year, U of D teams are consistently referenced as "Tigers," never "Titans." However, in the 1923-24 reports, although "Tigers" is still used, the teams are quite frequently referred to as "U of D men," "Red and White," and variations on those generic names, suggesting some dissatisfaction with "Tigers" as the nickname. Then, the May 7, 1924 Varsity News, under the headline "Ellis Remains as Frosh Coach: 'Titans' New Nickname," reported: So it appears that the idea that the University adopted Titans in 1894 is about 30 years too early--but confusion with the Tigers baseball club was a concern when the change was made. The story about the large Titans (though not ruled out as a source of inspiration) doesn't seem correct either. Rather, there was simply a conscious choice to come up with a new nickname, and a conscious decision to go with "Titans." Interesting that they checked and found no other "Titans." We now share that name with Cal-State Fullerton, and 4 non-DI teams around the country. Oral Roberts were the Titans from their inception in 1965 until 1993, when they changed their nickname to Golden Eagles.

The University of Memphis, which changed its name from Memphis State years ago, played in throwback Memphis State uniforms for their home game against SMU yesterday. They were a big hit with the fans in attendance and the general Memphis fan base. I think throwback U of D uniforms would be a big hit among young and old Titan fans, which is why the University will probably never do it.

Are you referring to the 1977 uniforms with ghetto jersey out of the pants and the name below the number?
